E308: Bungie's E3 announcement deferred by publisher [Update 4]
72
Update 4: Xbox head Don Mattrick confirmed that Bungie is working on a new Halo title. Whether this is related to the announcement is unclear.
Update 3: Luke Smith has commented to Joystiq: "We still have an exclusive publishing agreement with Microsoft, as we confirmed when we announced the split last year. That arrangement has not changed." Also, all teased images of an announcement have now been removed from Bungie.net and within Halo 3. View images in the gallery below.
Update 2: Luke Smith replied to a comment made in NeoGAF confirming the publisher in question is in fact Microsoft. Reponding to the comment, "Bungie is the one who made this great little hype machine. And--although this will just add to the fire--they never say it's Microsoft." Smith replied, "Our publisher is Microsoft."
Update: Bungie community lead Luke Smith has confirmed the postponement is legitimate. "We already are deeply disappointed with how things unfolded to this point without getting our fans to the intended payoff." When forum goers at NeoGAF assumed it was a joke Smith responded with the above comment and added, "Nope. Not our style." It's real everyone. Sorry.
It appears that the wait is over. Forgoing the original plan of waiting for the countdown clock to reach zero, Bungie.net has been updated with new information regarding the mysterious Superintendent. According to the newly refreshed site, the Superintendent is ... well, we don't know. According to the site Bungie was working toward a reveal when its publishing partner, presumably Microsoft, canceled the announcement.
Right now on Bungie.net a letter from Bungie president, Harold Ryan is displayed and reveals the cancellation of the announcement.
Note: To clarify the speculation that Harold Ryan is not the president (effectively the studio manager) of Bungie LLC, you may want to listen to the January 18, 2008 Bungie Podcast [link opens iTunes]

Thanks.
I know that no one here wants to believe it. I don't either! I'm a fan too, you know?
But if I ever sourced a Wiki for a story you all would DESTROY me.
LOL, so I think it's funny THAT was someone's proof!

What is Microsoft thinking? I don't mind the delay or even the disappointing teases but why would they further damage their relationship with Bungie? Isn't it bad enough that they effectively bought their independence back because they wanted to do their own thing. How is this supposed to stop them from never making a 360 game again when their publishing deal with MS is over? I understand they probably didn't want to overshadow Gears but they shouldn't have let Bungie start teasing.

It's like people can't be bothered to look at the game credits, and trust a wiki instead:

idk.. the more and more I look at this, the more I'm starting to believe it's a fake, and Bungie actually WILL release something.. Notice how they stopped the timer at exactly 12 hours? This means it was stopped at 7 p.m. ...And what's Bungie's favorite number? o_o

Hey, I think I know the answer to the Bungie thing... and I DON'T think it's a real announcement. Check out: http://tinyurl.com/5bryfn I am Xepherys on that site (tfproject.org).
No, it isn't a scam... it's just WAY too much to post here (and I'm too lazy to convert BBcode to HTML for all of my links) :)

this could be something could be nothing.
The whole image on the site with the notice is a static image right? The why is the time "12:00:00:00 high-lightable text. Being a designer this make no sense to me. why keep it there at all unless it is misdirection.
Also why shut down the whole site if you cancelled an announcement. Bungie still has the whole stat tracking side to its website. and this would also still affect people looking for the forums of bungie. If the is official and real the site should be back up. To make the inconvenience as least painful as possible.
I know that some sources are reporting it has been officially confirmed that there will not be an announcement. But I think something is happening. We will have a better idea soon.

Before, when it was counting down, the text was highlightable. I think it's just a JS timer showing text from a fontgroup. Before, you could highlight, but after 1 second, when the timer clicked again, it unhighlighted (well, everything but the colons... static field portion I'd guess).
At any rate, I'm tellin ya:

^--- It's the answer... or at least part of it. Crazy shit is forthcoming!

The lameness of this announcement is pretty intense, but since we probably won't be seeing whatever they're working on for another couple of years, I guess I will just wait patiently.
