Ubisoft announces Ener-G, sports games for girls
Move over Imagine and Petz, there's a new Ubisoft boutique label for Joystiq to ignore! The company has just announced Ener-G, the first sports game label for girls. Adventure Riders, Dance Squad and Gym Rockets are the first games lined up for us to be completely oblivious to shortly before they sell 500,000 copies exclusively on the DS.Good to meet you Ener-G, here's hoping this is both the beginning and end of a beautiful friendship.

No girls on the internet. This won't be read.
Eleniel @ Jul 15th 2008 7:22PM
Games targeted at young girls = awesome.
Crappy low-budget cash-in games targeted at young girls just because no one else is explicitly targeting this audience = NOT AWESOME.

Is it just me, or does Ubisoft seem headed in just a really bad direction as of late?
Ghen @ Jul 15th 2008 9:33PM
First it was the so-emo-im-cutting-myself prince of persia so I'm not surprised.

Games targeted at young girls?
Well...someone call Chris Hansen.

As a girl, all I can say is that I didn't realize the huge game collection I've been working on since I was a youngster was all non-girl games. Hell, I thought games were for everyone, but here I find out that my thousands of dollars of games were BOY games, because these HERE are the girl games. How about that! I've been doing it wrong this whole time! I just laid down $60 on Civilization Revolution, I'd better go return it and get these girl games. I hope they have a clear "girl games" label on them so I can find them.

Girl on the internetz! OMGWTFBBQ!

When I have a daughter, the only games she will be allowed to play are "Chastity: Fun for all ages" and "Why I won't let you shop at Macys: The Game". Not going to have my little girl corrupted by thoughts that she might be able to own a pony, or dance in a "Dance Squad" (surely a game for heretics and sluts) no sir.
/end sarcasm
By girl games, they mean little girl games. Most little girls wouldn't be satisfied with The Guy Game or Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. Sure they are fine for boys of all ages, but girls? No. This is kinda like how they have a girls and boys section at the toy store, and why the girls section is basically one gigantic mass of solid pink. Is it sexist? Well...no, not usually, since in my experience (I shopped with my parents and sister when I was young) most girls genuinely like the pink fluffy crap in the girl section of the toy store.
Meh, who am I kidding, let's all just keep Bawwwwwing at the sexism.
Gnoll @ Jul 15th 2008 8:11PM
I've been playing video games since I was a little girl. There was STILL no reason for this.
BananaBoat @ Jul 15th 2008 7:52PM
This is a major face palm moment if I've ever seen one. I hope it won't have an online element...I can see the story now...
House @ Jul 15th 2008 7:54PM
Yeah, probably these titles will suck, but who they're marketed to is no reason to dismiss them. There are tons of games made for men and boys that would be better left ignored.
mr mobius @ Jul 15th 2008 7:56PM
Surely Call of Duty was a girl's game? Because ya know. It was. Or something. Whatever. I don't know where I;m going with this....
Ubisoft is sexist. Hmm. That went somewhere but not quite sure where.
Anyway. Feel free to minus this. It'll give Fernando a try to not be minused.
Jhongerkong @ Jul 15th 2008 8:37PM
If this is for girls, then this is highly inaccurate. For one thing, there are no trees in a kitchen, nor are there horses.
Dovi @ Jul 15th 2008 11:37PM
Nor are there trees in the laundry room.
offday @ Jul 15th 2008 8:47PM
Doesn't stuff like this just make gamer girls mad? Because if I was a girl, these crappy "girl" games would make me pretty angry.
Eleniel @ Jul 15th 2008 10:55PM
There's nothing wrong with making games targeted at young girls. Ubisoft is trying to cater to a new audience whose needs clearly aren't being met by current offerings; gaming, especially on the DS, is extremely common for boys and girls, and is much less of a nerdy thing. These games aren't being marketed at we experienced female gamers who cut our teeth on Zelda and the like, so there's really no reason to be insulted on this aspect.
What's insulting is that little to no money or effort is put into these games, as if "games for girls" are an afterthought and an easy cash-in *because* most games are gender-neutral or targeted at boys. They're BAD GAMES, as if girls will play any old thing because they don't know better (the fact that "girl games" are generally so bad probably contributes to the trend of girls losing interest in gaming as they grow older). The Imagine Babies box art had a freaking stock photo watermark on it, FFS!
