Joystiq E3 eyes-on: MadWorld (Wii)
Click to embiggen
Upon walking into the tiny room Sega had Platinum Games crammed into in their closed-door section of the E3 floor, we thought that Bayonetta would be the only title on-hand. Then, our wildest dreams came true and we were graced with what is sure to be a day one purchase for us: Wii title MadWorld.
We're not kidding. You'll want to buy this game.
Gallery: MadWorld
This game stars a man with a simple name, Jack. Jack is thrust into Mad City, forced to kill countless goons for points in some kind of twisted game show. The more stylish the kill, the more points he receives. Once he has accumulated enough points, Jack can then challenge the stage's boss. Sadly, our demo ended upon accruing enough points to take on that boss and was, overall, way too short for our taste (it was merely a couple minutes where Atsushu Inaba played for us).
But, the time leading up until the demo's conclusion was nothing short of amazing. The ways in which Jack can kill his enemies are as varied as the objects that populate the game's environments. Flaming barrels are available to toss enemies into, as well as random weapons littering the streets. Found a wall with spikes all over it? Toss a dude against it. How about a train? Well, you can guess how you'd use that.
Jack also has a chainsaw available, which Platinum Games confirmed would be the default weapon. Utilizing it in different ways is the name of the game here, as you can cut people in half, behead them or just go crazy, berserker style, and swing away until your heart's content.
One of our main concerns was the visual style. Sure, it's very artistic, but could a game that is primarily black and white keep a gamer focused? Maybe it was the newness of it all for us, but we found no issue with the game's graphics. It's a nice direction, but one that also allows the limited graphical capabilities of the Wii to be utilized in a very effective way.
Finally, we noticed a somewhat familiar voice while the game was being demoed. It sounded a lot like that John DiMaggio Marcus Fenix guy. When asked about that, the Platinum Games folks commented that they could not say anything about the voice work that was in the demo.
After the presentation, we walked away feeling very good about Platinum Games and their upcoming Wii game.

Wow! Walls of spikes and flaming barrels?! And random weapons scattered around?! And chainsaws!? Oh man, finally something ORIGINAL in an action game!
...
baby sea tuna @ Jul 16th 2008 10:37AM
Well...*I* thought it was funny.
bm @ Jul 16th 2008 11:01AM
Oh yeah because, you know, this definitely looks like everything else we've seen before.
You complete and utter fucktard.
Mike @ Jul 16th 2008 11:50AM
Ha. Apparently all you sheep need to get you excited about an otherwise completely standard third person action game is a coat of black and white paint and some exaggerated violence.
*You* are the reason it's taking so long for games to catch up with other forms of entertainment in legitimacy and credibility. Grow up. Or keep using words like "fucktard" to show everyone what a big boy you are.
TwEE @ Jul 16th 2008 12:53PM
Yeah because games should try to "catch up with other forms of entertainment in legitimacy and credibility" right? pffff..
Anticrawl @ Jul 16th 2008 1:04PM
State of Emergency is the closest I've ever seen to this sort of game. Sure it's shallow, sure it's not really original, but it looks fun as hell and I've been needing an over-the-top arcady game for a while now.
Haggard @ Jul 16th 2008 2:20PM
@TwEE
Why shouldn't they?
Or do you want gaming to be a dirty little secret forever, whilst people can sound cool by saying they love to watch classic movies.
Rocketboy @ Jul 16th 2008 2:42PM
Mike..
"Grow up. Or keep using words like "sheep" to show everyone what a big boy you are"
I fixed it for you.
Faar @ Jul 16th 2008 5:59PM
Original or not - what game truly is these days? at least 98% of everything we play is a derivative of something else, and I'm somewhat dubious about the remaining 2% as well - I'm sure Jack Thompson's going to be absolutely THRILLED reading about this title.
What you say? Waving the remote around, hacking people to pieces with a chainsaw, tossing them into walls of spikes, into flaming barrels and in front of moving locomotives? Yeah, that does sound like something he's going to go absolutely batshit insane over - and not in a good way.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 16th 2008 10:11AM
Can someone please explain to me why this game wasn't in the press conference? Hell it seems that Nintendo had alot more interesting titles that could have saved their press conference.
Also Mad World looks awesome.
Jagzi11a @ Jul 16th 2008 10:23AM
well because thats not a family oriented game. And I'm sure nintendo didn't want to lose the casual, non-combatant mrket. Nintendo loves kickign the crap out of the hardcore gamer market in the teeth.
FOXHOUND @ Jul 16th 2008 10:24AM
This, TIGER WOODS'09(it's *finally* online) and SHAWN WHITE SNOWBOARDING(if it's remotely good) for me. Unless the DEAD RISING rumor is true and if they change the game enough to warrant a second purchase for the Wii version(got the X360 one); then that's four Wii games I've got to look forward to.
Of course... they'd have to fix the font, ensure the controls are good, allow a better save system, and in a "probably-not-going-to-be-in-the-game" option -- custom soundtracks.
redneckvampire @ Jul 16th 2008 10:33AM
It's because the hardcore, elite gamers only make up less than 10% of the total gaming population. However, hardcore, elite gamers themselves think that they make up somewhere around 80% of the population.
Everytime something happens in the gaming world and you can't understand why, that is the explanation. A dollar from the elite spends just as well as a dollar from the casual, but there are so many more casual gamers. Oh, and the casual gamers aren't as picky.
baby sea tuna @ Jul 16th 2008 10:41AM
"Oh, and the casual gamers aren't as picky."
And boy, does the Wii's lineup ever reflect that!
Mark C @ Jul 16th 2008 10:44AM
@Jagzi11a:
What about COD:WaW? Burning people with a flame thrower doesn't offend the casual, non-combatant market? (I realize they're Nazis of course)
Levi @ Jul 16th 2008 10:48AM
Nintendo's E3 keynote was kinda like Thanksgiving dinner with the entire family, but all of the "enthusiast" games were treated like teenagers and forced to sit at the little kid table in the living room. They didn't want the drama of mature rated games disturbing their family frendly pleasantries at the main table.
redneckvampire @ Jul 16th 2008 11:25AM
"And boy, does the Wii's lineup ever reflect that!"
Yes, baby sea tuna, you're quite right.
However maybe I should have put that hardcore, elite gamers love to nitpick a game to death. I can already imagine the elite reviewer that gives Wii Sports Resort a low score because it doesn't have great graphics, DLC, or online multiplayer.
Anticrawl @ Jul 16th 2008 1:37PM
Hardcore "elite" gamers as you say may only make up 10 pecent of the gaming population, but they make up well over half of the total software sales. So perhaps they should pay attention to us.
redneckvampire @ Jul 16th 2008 1:51PM
They are paying attention to you otherwise they wouldn't be showing off a game like this. It's just the current buzzword is expanding the market. It's expanding away from hardcore. The industry is not forgetting you, they are just excited that they have created a new area of reveneue and like talking about it.
Superstar90 @ Jul 16th 2008 6:09PM
Tell me about it, Nintendo has so much "hardcore" games coming for their system, yet they spent 20 minutes talking about a snowboarding game by ubisoft.
They should have shown:
Monster Hunter 3
Rune Factory Frontier
Tenchu 4
Fragile
Madworld
Tales of Symphonia 2
Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
MegaMan 9
The Conduit
That's all that I can name off the top of my head, and they are the Wii games I'm most interested in.
KonohaShinobi @ Jul 16th 2008 10:14AM
Now is the time for third parties to really make a profit on the wii now that Nintendo has sold out.
WiiFTW @ Jul 16th 2008 10:23AM
+1 for you sir
Now all those third-party devs have to do is not churn out shitty minigames and we should be good.
klepto88 @ Jul 16th 2008 11:40AM
Look at Zack & Wiki, look at No More Heroes. Look at their sales - 3rd parties are understandably not that enthusiastic to make original non-casual games. They just don't sell.
Shadow El @ Jul 16th 2008 11:40AM
I think your definition of "Sell Out" is a bit flawed, or maybe I've just spent too much time paying attention to the damn music industry.
And who exactly have they sold out TO?
TwEE @ Jul 16th 2008 12:57PM
I was under the impression that those (a point a click adventure game and a suda 51 game) sold better then expected klepto88..
BPM [MSN: BPMdotEXE @ hotmail.com] @ Jul 16th 2008 2:25PM
Zack & Wiki sold about 390k worldwide (which fared MUCH better in NA and EU than Japan).
No More Heroes sold about 330k worldwide (once again, NA was its strongest market, and Japan its weakest). I can't confirm it, but I think it's already outperformed Suda51's last "big" game: Killer7.
Whether or not they were profitable is unknown (no clue what their budgets were).
Nintendo hasn't sold out. They just are tapping into multiple markets. It isn't like Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music is ALL they're making. Give me a break.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 17th 2008 3:38PM
It's not all they're making, but it's apparently all they want you to know about.
John @ Jul 16th 2008 10:15AM
The reason it wasnt included was because that cammie woman took up the time yappin bout her life's problems
arrrgh @ Jul 16th 2008 11:31AM
what a warpig of a whore
Co @ Jul 16th 2008 1:16PM
arrrgh, the habitual line stepper.
AwesomeTown @ Jul 16th 2008 10:18AM
Oh yea, there are games coming out for the Wii I want. After yesterday, I completely forgot.
Rocketboy @ Jul 16th 2008 10:43AM
Although I heart my Wii, I had the same problems yesterday... So sarcastic or not, I agree.
Mr Khan @ Jul 16th 2008 4:58PM
I'm sure we all went to bed yesterday feeling thoroughly downtrodden
But the pain will fade, and the reality that Wii & DS have a LOT of goodness coming down the pipe will set in
will fn b @ Jul 16th 2008 10:18AM
This looks fantastic. Its probably the third or fourth title on the Wii that I actually want.
natels @ Jul 16th 2008 10:18AM
I don't think the Sin City style would be a good thing on the eyes for a long time.
Foetoid @ Jul 16th 2008 10:30AM
Wow, and im a picky hardcore gamer with high-standards, refusing to buy minigames, and i've got 11 Wii Games, 12 GC games, 13 VC games and 1 WiiWare game. That doesnt include Mario Galaxy, SSBB, Battalion Wars, No More Heroes, Geometry Wars, Mario Kart or RE:UC since i dont own any of them and i can still find 35 games total to play on the Wii even while missing out on the best titles. If you're THAT picky you cant find more than 4 games to play, there is something wrong with you.
Jagzi11a @ Jul 16th 2008 10:25AM
true dat!
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 16th 2008 10:26AM
pshh.
What's wrong? Too Noirish for you?
natels @ Jul 16th 2008 10:29AM
I don't know but I do know that Frank Miller is filing a laqsuit as we speak.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 16th 2008 10:32AM
Yes because Frank Miller totally invented that look.
He also invented guys with chainsaws running around hacking people. He is so going to sue.
Foetoid @ Jul 16th 2008 10:35AM
This reply system is so completely fucked in the ass. It's actually getting worse. I made SURE that i replied to 'will fn b' in the post above and i triple checked, then it took a while to show up, and it went to the wrong person. Seriously Joystiq, you're making it a chore for anyone to bother with this site FFS!
natels @ Jul 16th 2008 10:43AM
Vegeta.. It's clearly a joke. Don't overanalyze!
Rocketboy @ Jul 16th 2008 10:44AM
natels.. Then how about a dark Manga style?
BlackTye @ Jul 16th 2008 10:21AM
And WHY wasn't this in the keynote?
BlackTye @ Jul 16th 2008 10:24AM
I guess it was too bloody. Bloody enough to take a smile off of Cammie face.
Zsavior @ Jul 16th 2008 11:27AM
That is a good question cause Bayonetta only comes up as PS3 and Xbox360 don't understand Why Mad world comes up on PS3 and xbox360 when it is wii.
Foetoid @ Jul 16th 2008 10:22AM
Why is this also filed under Ps3 and 360? Is it multiplatform or Wii Exclusive?
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 16th 2008 12:39PM
Joystiq crew has been having this problem a lot lately.
Calling Cooking Navi Cooking Nanny
Listing Samba de Amigo as Gamecube.
Maybe they use this to bitch about the Wii, want it to come to PS360, or are just to rushed to remove other tags
BPM [MSN: BPMdotEXE @ hotmail.com] @ Jul 16th 2008 2:28PM
They briefly talked about Bayonetta, which is Platinum Games' game for 360/PS3.
OMGOMG @ Jul 16th 2008 10:22AM
All around me are familiar faces...
