Joystiq E3 hands-on: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

As a game, I still don't feel like I get BK:NaB. In the sliver I was playing I got a sense that I needed to win some races to collect some puzzle pieces, and that frankly wasn't enough to inspire me to keep playing.
Sure, it looked really gorgeous, with zero pop-in and tons of color, a welcome respite from a lot of the grays and browns I'd been seeing during the week. Controls were pretty solid too. Some of the vehicles were disorienting at first, but they didn't take too long to get a hold of.
Regardless, it could have been the result of the selection I was playing or how much time I could spend with it, but I was bored and almost ready to pack it in, secure in the knowledge that my preconceptions were once again on the money.
But then I tried the vehicle editor.
Well, I and X3F's Richard Mitchell tried it out, and then, almost at the same time, I'd wager, we fell and fell hard.
It happened like this: We hopped into the garage and started tearing apart the Rare-provided ride, stripping it down to its base components. We then souped it up, strapping on four jets and retractable wings on each side.
Modding vehicles may look daunting at first, but it's actually surprisingly intuitive. If you can attach a piece to the spot you have it, it turns green. If it won't, it turns red. Simple. Each vehicle has a few layers you can cycle through before you use the control stick and d-pad to adjust the alignment of the specific part.
We saw dozens of add ons, from light and heavy propulsion (like jets) to wings and wheels and some specific gadgets like a spring that launches you into the air. Once you're back in the game, the gadgets get automatically mapped to the face buttons.
It's such a pleasure that even when your vehicle doesn't work out thank to the surprisingly realistic physics, it's no chore to give it another try.
Once we had outfitted out jet-powered fly car we took it out for a spin. Richard rocketed off a ramp with his jets and, moments before he crashed into the ground, extended his wings which sent him soaring towards the room's ceiling. It was in that moment that the real draw of the game became completely apparent.
For the next half hour I played with our rocket car, with each crazy build providing a completely different feel and, more often than not, a lot of fun.
So no, I still don't know if Nuts and Bolts will be a good game. But what I can say pretty authoritatively? As a toy it's already brilliant.

I've been waiting for Banjo Threeie ever since I finished Banjo Tooie, I'm hoping that this will live up to all of my expectations... and so far, I'm seeing that it probably will exceed them.
Still the same ol' collect notes and jiggies and such, but with a huge twist of creativity. As long as they stick to the original platforming bird-and-bear action, regardless of the new additions, it will be a success in my books.
JerJer @ Jul 16th 2008 11:17PM
is that what banjo "tooie" meant? i never understood that title...
Ignatius @ Jul 16th 2008 11:32PM
Yes. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Banjo Threeie.
Minor spoiler, but in Kazooie and Tooie, when Grunty was defeated in the final boss fight, she vowed to be back in the next game. With Tooie, she announced she'd be back in Banjo Threeie.
Mike @ Jul 17th 2008 1:20AM
"As long as they stick to the original platforming bird-and-bear action"
What part of stripping Banjo and Kazooie of nearly all their moves and replacing 80% of the game with vehicle-based mini games sounds like the original platforming action? They even admitted in a few interviews that the general gameplay was intended for a different game entirely and they ended up attaching the Banjo intellectual property to it.
The game looks fairly interesting, but it's clearly not a Banjo-Kazooie game in any way other than the characters. You could replace the bear-and-bird duo with any *one* character and it'd work just fine.
Atr-Slzr-Ctr @ Jul 17th 2008 2:19AM
what the... REALLY!?
Man this sounds like Super Mario Sunshine all over again!
Deozaan @ Jul 17th 2008 3:00AM
Am I the only one who thinks of Ratchet & Clank when I see a big doofus with some creature on his back with lots of gears and mechanical levels?
I bet it was originally a Ratchet & Clank game. Then they remembered that Banjo-Kazooie already did the backpack thing on the N64 and that Rare hasn't done anything anybody cared about for a while. So they switched all the big gears with puzzle pieces and changed the player models from R&C to B-K.
But those predictions are based off of absolutely zero information about this game before reading this blog entry.
Jacksons @ Jul 17th 2008 4:18AM
Deozaan,
Yeah, I see some similarities. I don't think it's anywhere near being a ripoff, though. Either way, I love both those franchises and am hella excited to play their newest entries!
blah @ Jul 17th 2008 2:00PM
Deozaan,
No offence but thatsa ridiculous notion you have there, Ratchet and Clank is an Insomniac game, a firm Sony developer, Rare on the other hand are a firm Microsoft dev team. So there is no way they'd give up there game to the opposition now is there?
Foetoid @ Jul 16th 2008 10:10PM
Along with Fable 2 and FFXIII, this is the OTHER reason im taking the plunge to buy a 360 finally to accompany my Wii and the 35ish games i own for that.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 16th 2008 10:13PM
“I once stated on the Joystiq Podcast that a bear who had a bird in his backpack is the single dumbest idea for a game in history”.
What about a plumber that travels through Galaxies to defeat a Giant Lizard and its army of Mushrooms and Turtles in order to rescue a different bunch of talking Mushrooms and a Princess?
Or
What about a talking and obnoxious Hedgehog that travels with a flying fox that travel in search of Jewels that give them Super Powers for no adequately explored reason in order to defeat a scientist which only ambition is to conquer a world full of talking animals and imprison them in robots than can be destroyed by jumping on them? And it only gets more ridiculous from there.
Or
What about a 10 year old that has the permission of his mother (No paternal figure present) to travel through the entire world by himself in order to capture rare species of animals , against their will , in order to participate in “Cock fights” to gain money to survive? Did I mention there is also an entire organization of people with fancy clothes that tries to conquer the world by capturing those animals?

I like the sound of that last one.
Oh wait, it's pokemon isn't it?

I will 100% buy this game this year, (unless it gets delayed for some reason of course). I'm a huge fan of Rare and Banjo, so I basically have no choice but to get it. And it looks GREAT.
Will @ Jul 16th 2008 10:22PM
man, reminds me of the old Invention Studio for the PC. Build a plane, test it out, try it all over again.
Joystick Hero @ Jul 16th 2008 10:57PM
Dude, I remember that game. It blew my 12 year-old mind.
Wise Guy @ Jul 16th 2008 10:28PM
I loved the whole Banjo series back in the day. Collecting items and unlocking areas. I love platforming titles. I think that genre is missing in today's NEXT GEN consoles. I doesn't seem like this is Justin's kind of game. Wait... isn't this the guy that already was disappointed in Fable 2. What the hell does this guy like? Just shooters?? I'm getting bored with his reviews. First it's "we need more than shooters"... now it's "this game is boring"??? Too many bitchy people out there that should not be reviewing for the rest of us.
Co @ Jul 16th 2008 10:45PM
"What the hell does this guy like? Just shooters??"
If he's a fan of the 360, then yes.
You buy Nintendo for the first party characters.
You buy Xbox for the FPS'. That is all.
This games sales will be abysmal.
Wise Guy @ Jul 16th 2008 11:06PM
@ CO
That's funny jackass. The characters??? Considering Wii sports is the most popular game on their platform. PS3 announced a number of new games this year (the majority being shooters). So banjo use to be a character on nintendo... and now that it's on xbox it's what... somehow different?? You sir are a complete moron and jackass. I can't even take you seriously, you're a joke. You yourself should be a character in a video game... maybe you can be fireballed off of a brick wall!!!
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 17th 2008 1:10AM
Wait... is this two Nintendo fanboys fighting?
Makeseven @ Jul 17th 2008 1:26AM
some games i LOVE for my xbox that are not FPS:
Mass Effect
Gears of War
Rock Band (much better on 360 than on wii)
GTA 4
Lost Odyssey
Those are just ones i like. there are plenty more.
I don't hate Wii. I like a lot of first party titles for it. But Nintendo fans are worse than sony's. You are so arrogant and say that all xbox people have is FPS. first, you guys have SHIT for FPS. second, we have PLENTY of RPGs. where are all the RPGs for wii? WHERE ARE THEY!
"you buy nintendo for the first party characters" and THATS all. xbox has a bigger variety of games than any of the other systems.
btw, im really excited for banjo. it looks AWESOME.

Is this the OFFICIAL "Bear, bird, backpack" thread?
In that case: Kangaroo carrying a keg with a kid inside of it
iisryan @ Jul 16th 2008 10:57PM
I still don't know how you can't like the Banjo-Kazooie series (if you've ever played them, that is). Yes, it's kind of a weird idea, but no weirder than an obese plumber having a death match with a magical, electric rodent, a narcissistic bounty hunter with form-fitting, homo-erotic clothing, a 2-dimensional being from another dimension, and a giant turtle toppling Gamera's high bar for zaniest fictional giant Japanese turtle.
But anyways, Banjo-Kazooie is, in my opinion, the most finely-polished 3D platformer ever. The levels, like in the Donkey Kong Country series before it, are brilliantly created, and its humor is well-cultured and subtle. The charm of the series comes from how simple the premise is, yet how well the minute details manifest themselves in the final product.
Anyways, it seems like I've heard nothing but bad things about the Banjo series from Joystiq (even though your review started working its way towards becoming a backhanded compliment). I say, give the series a chance and get over the initial hurdle of imaginative direction. You'll find a decidedly solid series.

Hold your horses, cowboy! You're really going to call Samus's zero suit "homo-erotic?" Interesting.
iisryan @ Jul 17th 2008 12:07AM
I was talking about Captain Falcon ;)
Vaf @ Jul 16th 2008 11:00PM
Sad on so many ways.
They could just make a Banjo Kazooie game in the same spirit and style like the others and have the vehicule creations mechanical platformer be a diferent game.
Wow,we would get the BK game we want and original content.
Instead they make these....I dont like it as a BK game, and I dont like it as a vehicule game because I want it to be BK.
RAAAAAAREEE
Evan @ Jul 16th 2008 11:05PM
Why the hell is the focus on vehicles? The 360 lacks good platformer games, platformer fans like myself are desperate for a good new platformer game, and Banjo-Kazooie are classic platformer characters, so wouldn't the logical thing be to MAKE A PROPER PLATFORMER GAME?
Diverging outside a series' traditional gameplay is typically made to cash in on the series' popularity, it's not a good way to revive a dead series.
Arttemis @ Jul 16th 2008 11:42PM
The BK games were always about overcoming obstacles and reaching new areas by using a growing list of abilities to reach previously-unreachable objectives in multiple areas.
Now, instead of using a handful of static abilities, we're overcoming obstacles and reaching new areas by using a growing list of tools (vehicles and parts) to reach previously-unreachable objectives in multiple areas.
This intrinsic hate toward the new design is mind boggling to me. Game characters themselves can be considered vehicles used by the player to progress in games.
BK3 is simply giving the character (and, in effect, the player) legions of options to progress - but now it seems like we can solve things in our own unique ways if we've collected enough parts.
Dovi @ Jul 16th 2008 11:07PM
Am I the only one who played Banjo Kazooie on the GBA?
ChooChooCharlie @ Jul 17th 2008 12:12AM
As far as I know, yes.
Was it good? How did it compare to the 64 titles?
ice~ @ Jul 16th 2008 11:18PM
LMFAO Mr.ESC u just owned him, thankyou. But this proves, Justin McElroy, that you can't just say a game sucks without getting at least 30 minutes into it...all my friends do that, they pick up the controller press one button and say the game sucks
I AM SO BUYIN THIS!!!EVEN THOUGH IM DIRT BROKE!!! Looks like im sellin my Wii
Talryyn @ Jul 16th 2008 11:24PM
So are you trying to say that while my son will like the bird in the backpack of a bear, and my wife will like the pretty colors, and then I will like the vehicle creator!?! Then I am sold, send me two!!
ChooChooCharlie @ Jul 17th 2008 12:17AM
This game looks / sounds amazing. Day one purchase for sure.
I still think the characters look a little creepy, though. Kazooie in particular.
B @ Jul 17th 2008 12:26AM
I honestly don't care if this is good or not...
I just want to fiddle around with Banjo again in HD with beautiful graphics
With that being said I'm sure this will be good
Makeseven @ Jul 17th 2008 1:40AM
why? as was stated in an inerview with one of the lead developers, vehicles are being integrated due to the size of the worlds you can explore.
he said that they realized they had a lot of power with the xbox 360 and it gave them more freedom. they began making worlds that were really cool, but they were also getting VERY big. they found it could get tedious to traverse the worlds and wanted to find something that could speed things up. thats where the vehicles came from. i like the idea. they say there will still be PLENTY of standard platforming.

Exactly! I hate all the people that are saying that they killed Banjo Kazooie and that it is going to suck! It is everything Banjo Kazooie was times a billion more stuff! The game is going to kick so much ass, it is not even funny!
Patrick @ Jul 17th 2008 2:22AM
@ Justin McElroy...
Um, did you even play the N64 originals? Because if you had, you'd GET what this series is all about and why it's so adored by its fans, and why we're apprehensive about the upcoming 360 incarnation.
Procris @ Jul 17th 2008 2:59AM
The original Banjo-Kazooie was better than Mario 64. There i said it and i'm being serious. I loved that game to death, it was that awesome.
The new one looks different. Its platforming with vehicles and thats something people are going to have to get used to. Looks awesome to me from everything i've seen.
Roddie @ Jul 17th 2008 4:19AM
Wouldn't it make more sense to have this written by someone who IS a Banjo-Kazooie fan? It's the fans of the original games who are most interested in how it plays...
Also, is there any chance you could have actually read through the article before you posted it? All the typos made it a headache to read; you made me think I was at Kotaku or something.
Jacksons @ Jul 17th 2008 4:30AM
Why am I always in the minority around here? I really like that they're taking it in a new direction. I always get burnt out on straight-up platformers. I have much more fun if the platforming is broken up by another mechanic, like combat in the Prince of Persias, or shooting in the Ratchet & Clanks, or sneaking in the Sly Coopers. Now this one's adding crazy vehicles? Count me in.
