Wii Music disc to include licensed songs, Nintendo 'not really thinking' about DLC
Speaking at the Nintendo's 2008 E3 developer roundtable, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that the Wii Music "game" disc will contain 50 songs, featuring a variety of of public domain songs, as well as licensed music. As for DLC? Nintendo is "not really thinking" about digital song distribution, instead focusing on using WiiConnect24 to share music videos.

Judging by the picture, I thought the Wii was releasing a Gay Pride waggle game.
ewwww.....

Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 2:05AM
I'm sure Miyamoto is very keen on changing the color palette to Shit-and-Concrete as soon as possible. Then he will replace Miis with buff Space Marines and remove all signs of female life. Would that make you happy?
Ethan @ Jul 17th 2008 7:48AM
Just wait for Captain Rainbow! Weeee!
Ian Murray @ Jul 16th 2008 10:44PM
Not really thinking about DLC.
Big surprise.
It's probably because they didn't announce any upgrades to the amount of available memory to the Wii.
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 1:33AM
Hurr hurr hurr Wii has no memory hurr hurr hurr. Grow some balls, drop $10, and buy a damn SD card. You know where the slot is, since you have to open it to sync Wiimotes and the balance board.
UltimateQ @ Jul 17th 2008 2:31AM
The wii has usb ports, I don't see why they don't just give us a 40gb external drive to hook up. They could charge like $100 bucks for it, ppl are stupid, they'd pay that much for a 40gb drive.

booticon @ Jul 18th 2008 11:54AM
@Shaq-Fu: We'd like more memory than 2GB (as the SD card slot doesn't support SDHC, which can easily be fixed in a software update). Not only that, but you can't actually PLAY content off of an SD card.
Dwag @ Jul 16th 2008 10:45PM
well we still get new songs right?
PeterF @ Jul 16th 2008 10:47PM
You are going to buy this trash? All you do is shake your wiimote. You don't have to play the instrument correctly (other then the drums), all you have to do is shake. How is that fun?
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 1:38AM
Seriously, Who votes this shit up? Thats like saying all you have to do to win Halo multiplayer is to jump around while shooting. Maybe we should wait to see the actual game getting more than 2 minutes of air time over an E3 conference. Or did you take the fact that the Wii has motion controls (waggle) and conclude thats how this game is going to work?
Your description of this game sounds just like GH or RB. Yet, somehow those games are "1337" and "Hardcore" while this is pointless. Not all video games need a point. Some, such as pokemon, AC, Wii Sports, are just fun little timewasters that you play when you want to have fun or have loads of time pass by in an instant
Dan @ Jul 17th 2008 10:34AM
Peter: " all you have to do is shake. How is that fun?"
Shaq: "Or did you take the fact that the Wii has motion controls (waggle) and conclude thats how this game is going to work?"
REALLY??!?! You get to waggle the controller too?? Oh my God!! THATS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!
You TOTALLY make me wanna get this game now Shaq.... thank you!!!...................

mr nimblewick @ Jul 16th 2008 10:52PM
How is that different from any game? I'm not defending this one, mind you, but every game is ultimately pointless.
Joystick Hero @ Jul 16th 2008 11:00PM
There are very few things in life that aren't ultimately pointless really.
This post for example.
Zippy5150 @ Jul 16th 2008 11:00PM
Doesn't that pretty much sum up ALL videogames?
Superstar90 @ Jul 17th 2008 1:31AM
OMG. As the #1 Electroplankton fanboy of all time, I completely disagree with you.
Electroplankton has good graphics for a DS game.
Wii Music is just plain ugly for any game.
Electroplankton has neat and intuitive controls.
Wii Music just has you shake the controller and make music.
Electroplankton has cute little plankton.
Wii Music has disgusting Mii's that look like the unborn children of Michael Jackson and Sam Cassell. (I think Miis are VERY ugly).
Electroplankton has you create music totally unique to you, some of it can sound good and some can sound bad.
Wii Music just makes a nice song as you shake the controller.
And I understand where you are coming from when you say that EP is useless, but it wasn't meant to be a full fledged game. It was one of the first DS games and was really just to show the capabilities of the DS (and it really showed it well, it's a very polished game). Wii Music is just a really lame cash in. Honestly, Wii Sports and Wii Play have more going for them because they require some sort of ability. You could attach the Wiimote to a dog and it would score the same as a professional musician.

No DLC and isnatead adding useles gimmicks like sharing and refusing to fix the storage problem is Nintendo being an ass again.
They will learn as always but it will be a painfull proces and a long proces.
Just like CDs,Online,etc.

They should re-name it Rock Orchestra.
AzaMcWazza @ Jul 17th 2008 12:15AM
I like a lot of what Nintendo does, and I don't have a problem with Mii's, Wii Sports and casual gaming, but Wii Music at E3 looked truly pathetic. The idea also of making a music game where missing notes and things doesn't matter, is just too much down the "we're all a happy family playing a pre canned simulator" feeling.
Jayslacks @ Jul 16th 2008 11:05PM
DLC? Wouldn't that mean you'd need a place to store it? One thing at a time, guys. Baby steps.
iofthestorm @ Jul 17th 2008 3:12AM
Yeah, but it seems like you'd need a lot of space to store videos too, although it's probably going to be similar to the way it saves Brawl replays where it records keypresses and not the actual video.
Alvin @ Jul 16th 2008 11:05PM
why are the birds on top of those Mii's heads?
MrSpaceCowboy @ Jul 16th 2008 11:07PM

Ben O @ Jul 17th 2008 12:21AM
Sounds like what they did for Donkey Konga.
Dan @ Jul 17th 2008 10:16AM
Hell at least Donkey Konga looked waaay more fun then this and actually was innovative using a special konga set.
This....this is just a sad attempt to a music game.
Charbax @ Jul 16th 2008 11:26PM
Nintendo needs to provide a "Composition Mode", just as there is a Drumkit solo Jam mode, there should be a recording studio mode, where you should be able to compose music freely and exactly how you want it. Then once the whole band or orchestra composition is done, you can save it and then perform it as a band or conduct it with the Orchestra. Nintendo should have an algorithm to make this work with any compositions. Then let people share their compositions and performances on WiiConnect24.
Also, there should be a DS Music game that lets you compose music with as high a precision as any advanced music sequencer software on PC, but Nintendo can make sure that it is simple to use, provide loop modes, provide samples or ways to record or download an unlimited amount of samples. IF there is no sampling feature, then at least let people compose Midi type of music.
Then also Nintendo needs to let people sing using the Wii Speak accessory, the built-in Microphone of the DS or a headset.
Superstar90 @ Jul 17th 2008 1:36AM
DS is getting Korg DS-10, which is a DS version of their popular MS-10 synthesizer. It looks to be the most amazing and complex piece of DS software.

This post is great. Finally people are realizing how bad Nintendo is, that they've abandoned gamers. They have Pikmin, Mario, and Zelda games in the works, yet a soccer mom led the press conference where she talked about wii skiiing because of her borken wrist.
Microsoft showed off FFXIII, Portal: Still Alive, Fable II, and Gears of War 2.
Sony showed off God of War III, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, inFAMOUS, MAG, and Resistance PSP.
.....and Nintendo has Wii Music....

Those games all look exactly the same and they all play exactly the same way as Unreal Tournament 10 years ago. The only difference being that those new 1st person gaming engines might output a few more pixels per second.
So what, who cares about flashing epilleptic explosion animations? It's pretty much dumb to constantly just shoot at stuff. All those games most probably use the same underlying 1st person gameplay engines as Unreal did last century. Only slight AI improvements and slight animation smoothness is the only difference. All those 1st person storylines all feel more stupid one then the other.
On the other hand, Nintendo really invents new ways to have fun with video games. I am extremely impressed that my grand parents use Wii Fit everyday. And I am also having extreme fun at beating all of their Wii Fit game records each time I go to visit them. Wii Music will change the way people view video games. There is no points you can earn when you play music, be it on the Wii or in reality. But you can score by making it so that the music sounds better. That is the only goal. The orchestra conductor has a huge influence on the musical experience, and thus Wii Orchestra mode is a very very impressive experience.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 17th 2008 12:53AM
That's a terrible argument, you know.
"Burgers are still being made just as they were being made ten years ago. But now, we've gotten rid of the burger entirely, to appeal to vegetarians! Burger fans should totally love this."
I've been gaming all my life, and Nintendo's new direction might be exciting for someone who's never gamed before, but for those of us who are actually GAMERS, the PS3 and the 360 have much more to offer.
Now, I liked how you picked and chose games that have shown just how much gaming has matured and evolved as the backing for your argument. It actually made me laugh.
danny841 @ Jul 17th 2008 1:25AM
@Charbax
Wii music looks like complete trash!
It's set up so that you don't actually have to play the game to "play the game". You waggle a controller and music comes out. Are you saying this ISN'T a step backward? Because I'm pretty sure I had a toy that did the exact same thing as wii music when I was a baby. It's a child's toy on a grand scale.
The wii isn't inventing a new way to look at games, it's insulting anyone with half a brain. With wii music Nintendo is simply letting you wave a wiimote and randomly pull notes out. There's no sense of accomplishment, no artistic depth, no story, no nothing. It's a throwaway game and nothing more. It will change nothing and add nothing to the medium. Nintendo is certainly supporting the notion that games are nothing more than child's things.
This mass market appeal they're after is only going to strengthen that stereotype and throw more parents up in arms when they see their kids playing M-rated games on the system along with wii music. I'm not saying games aimed at children don't have their place I'm simply saying it should not be the focal point of the company if they want to advance video games as a medium and/or please their fans of years.
The_Punisher @ Jul 17th 2008 8:29AM
All true. They tout all of this as revolutionary, but it really isn't. It's people like Chorbax that THINK it's revolutionary that gives Nintendo the right to make "Wii Sports: Resort Edition" and "Mario Kart: Wii Edition. NOW WITH A REAL WHEEL!"
People like you keep Nintendo alive. This doesn't HELP gaming. Did you see that freakjob giving the presentation (not Reggie xD). She's the kind of mother that's going to say "Metal Gear Solid 4 caused my baby to pick up a gun and shoot people, ban it from the shelves!"
And another thing: YAY, ur grandparents can play videogames. That really shows improvement in technologically advanced games.....(not that i have anything against old people, but my grandma couldn't play Ticket to Ride)
frogprince @ Jul 16th 2008 11:36PM
John Tesh and Yanni were meant to be in this game (Wii Music: Legends of Musak?). But seriously, I don't see DLC being a problem for this since the instruments sounded like MIDI files.
bVork @ Jul 16th 2008 11:52PM
I like how the RSS feed just says "Wii Music disc to include licensed songs, Nintendo 'not really thinking'"
So true.
Saria the Cat @ Jul 16th 2008 11:57PM
Well, I'm "not really thinking" about buying this game, Nintendo.
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 1:58AM
@Saria MG YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS GAME!!!! OR ELSE NINTENDO GOES OUT OF BUSINESS
Get.Over.It. Your opinions don't matter. Nintendo made huge profits doing exactly this, why should they change it? Because 20 people go on Joystiq and bitch about it? Ubisoft even announced they're focusing on this, yet everybody praises them. You guys have got to learn that in the grand scheme of things, you bashing Nintendo on Joystiq is like pissing in an ocean of piss
Saria the Cat @ Jul 17th 2008 2:23AM
Yeah, screw open forum and discussion. We should just never express opinions or even bother forming them because in the end, we are all dead anyway. NIHILISM FOR THE LOSE.
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 2:54AM
No, you just need to stop bitching when Nintendo doesn't announce StarFox and shit. Nintendo is a multi-billion dollar corporation, they aren't going to be influenced by a couple of whiny 14 year old girls on Joystiq.
You also need to stop this whole "I do not find this game appealing, therefore it is quite bad" shit. Nintendo has a target in mind, and if you aren't in that demographic, DONT FUCKING BUY THE GAME. I have never once had Reggie send over a 31i73 squad of ninjas and make me play Mario Galaxy or Wii Sports. I choose to do so myself, and had fun. Don't find games like that fun? DONT FUCKING PLAY THEM
Stop acting like its the only game you can buy on the Wii, or that your opinion is greater than anybody else's and companies should do as you say. Like Shaq Boll said, Miyamoto isn't a fucking retard, and when this game is released, I foresee all of you bashers eating your words.
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 4:52AM
This is coming from a man(?) with 16 comments, and then goes and eats a bowl of cold hard irony. You claim that I spam people with shit, then go on to do the exact same thing. But then again, what do you expect from the lovechild of xXFenixXx and tmacjordan?
*This just In* apparently, there are these things called "third party developers" that also develop games for consoles. Crazy right?
Sony had the best press because I'm now interested in a PSP, Nintendo is 2nd because they at least announced something, and Microsoft is 3rd because they showed what we thought they would. There is only so long I can consider a company being late to their own party (XBox price cut, RE5 co-op, etc) cute.
Dan @ Jul 17th 2008 10:23AM
Sooo your expression your "opinion" about bashing her for giving her opinion on the game... I think you just went on a 20 minute rant for noo reason what so ever.
But I'm sure you'll write another essay and a half on why I'm wrong also.
