Gradius Rebirth announced for WiiWare
It looks like Mega Man 9 started something. A new retro-flavored Gradius title has been announced for WiiWare. Gradius Rebirth will strike Japanese Wii systems this Summer. That's pretty much all we know for now -- details about the game's content, like whether or not it's a remake of a previous Gradius game is still unknown. Considering Gradius (NES) lives on the Virtual Console, we'd be surprised if this wasn't a completely brand-new game.

Sorry, I'm not all to familiar with Gradius

Wario: GRRRRR
That's impossible/just not right. Do yourself a favor and track down a few of the older Gradius games (as much as I hate endorsing emulation, it's the only way if you don't want to destroy your wallet).

what about the VC games? i gots the space

Go for it, though I'd recommend Axelay before Gradius III.
Keiichi @ Jul 17th 2008 1:36PM
Doesn't Axelay have nothing to do with the Gradius series...?
Best one to start with is probably Gradius II (aka Vulcan Venture).
StrangeBum @ Jul 17th 2008 11:08AM
Oh shi-
I love Gradius style games. Actually one of my sleeper favs on XBLA is Aegis Wing, that free MS intern game. Pretty hectic fun for a simple shmup.

Interesting. I'm getting my taste for shooters back (fell away from the genre for a long time) so this might be worth a look. Just... make sure it's Nintendo hard or it's not really going to feel like a Gradius game. (Unrelated: R-Type Final-- the one I'm working on now-- infuriates me to the point of wall-punching. It's a good infuriating, though.)

It hurts so good, doesn't it?

It's a new game, fine, but I don't like the way WiiWare is going. Seems to me the shooter genre is somewhat niche, but definitely has its fans. Looks like disappointing garbage to me, however. WiiWare's prospects are looking dim, in my opinion.
nastysquar3d @ Jul 17th 2008 12:46PM
I agree... I've bought 2 WiiWare games so far.
Dr. Mario and LostWinds
Both of which are excellent but I'm really only looking forward to two others, Animales de la Muerte and Eternity's Child (and LostWinds2 but who knows when that's coming).
And I've begun to loose interest in Eternity's child.

Same thing on XBLA, shooters and board games. Why? Because, they are easy to make and aren't that hard to pick up and play. Besides, its pretty much the only genre that retail Devs haven't tried to breathe new life into.
iofthestorm @ Jul 17th 2008 3:52PM
Upmodded for truthiness.
Blazur @ Jul 17th 2008 11:39AM
Gradius was an awesome game! I enjoyed the hell out of both that and lifeforce.
Blu-Sam @ Jul 17th 2008 11:41AM
ZOMG, I want it.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 17th 2008 11:50AM
Sweet Gradius.
I hope is not just for Japan.
joel.spring @ Jul 17th 2008 11:55AM
What about the code? Will it return?
Hafk @ Jul 17th 2008 12:08PM
Yes... only to kill you! Muahahah.
UNLESS, you remember to use the triggers for left and right!
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 12:32PM
Actually, its the NES game, so they're only gonna limit how often you can use it
Hafk @ Jul 17th 2008 6:18PM
I was talking about the classic "return" of the code in Gradius III, where you would not get full powerups, but you would instead die.
This updated code is also in all home gradius games after this, including the latest release, Gradius V.
Now, there has been changes Like which set of triggers gives you what powerup, the Laser and Double with other powerups, but it has still remained the foundation of the code.

I think this whole new retro thing is going to end up being just a fad, but I don't care, I'm still going to buy into it.
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 2:32PM
No, the Wii is a fad. THIS. IS. METAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
edhc44 @ Jul 25th 2008 9:35AM
People seem to enjoy throwing around the word "fad" nowadays... Since the Wii proved to have staying power, something else must be a fad, right?
Pathetic.
Josh @ Jul 25th 2008 1:21PM
What? All I'm saying is that we're probably going to see dozens of these new retro games after Mega Man 9 proves to be popular. Then the hype will eventually die down.
But even if it is a fad, I'm still really excited for the new retro movement.
TwEE @ Jul 17th 2008 2:21PM
Heh, I was about to download Gradius III on the vc the other day.. but after downloading Final fantasy Im out of room.. I needs more room dagnabit..
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 2:39PM

joe @ Jul 17th 2008 10:20PM
