Joystiq E3 hands-on: Halo Wars (Xbox 360)

The UI is incredibly intuitive. Left analog moves the camera, right analog zooms, A selects, X is the move/attack button and Y activates special moves. If you've played other RTS games ported to the Xbox 360, this is a very different experience.
Gallery: Halo Wars
One of the key features of the UI is selecting build/research actions through a circular pop-up interface. Dave Pottinger, lead designer of the game, says the company has "the magic rule of eight" with the ring selection screen. No more than eight things can be on it, which keeps the pace of the game moving and reduces selection clutter. The menu is intuitive and fast for a controller.
The action in the game consists of making squads of diverse classes and sending them out to slaughter the Covenant. Unlike most RTS games, Halo Wars isn't about making four or five diverse squads and just sending them into battle all over the map without a second thought. From our time with the game, it seems like players will make a squad, battle in a location and try to push forward. Then a second group can be made to hold an acquired strategic choke-point on the map. Once in battle, players will quick select troops to strategically attack certain enemies.
The squads we got to work with consisted of staples in the Halo universe like Marines, Spartans, Warthogs, air units, and the introduction of the Elite crisping Flamethrower unit. The game takes place 20 years before the first Halo so there's plenty of Spartan to go around. Once in battle, it's easy to quick select a certain unit with the right trigger and then have them use a special attack by pressing Y on the intended target. For example, the Spartan will jump onto the Covenant's Wraith tanks, punch its way into the cockpit and hijack the vehicle. Voila, now we have a Wraith at our disposal.
In orbit over the planet is The Spirit of Fire, a colonization vessel, which will supply air support when it's needed. When a skirmish isn't looking good, a bombing raid can be called in or a MAC canon can shoot down a single devastating blast. The game actually switches to a drawn out targeting reticle view to give the feel a player is shooting from high above from the messy battle below.
One other quick thing is how building is done. Players will have a main base with seven slots around it. Buildings aren't just placed willy-nilly in Halo Wars; they are an extension of the main building. Barracks, generators, vehicle factories are some of the additional buildings we saw. Once again, the entire process is done to keep the focus on the combat in the game, instead of getting too involved in placement strategy.
The easiest way to describe Halo Wars to a gamer would be to say it is to RTS games what Civilization Revolution is to Civilization. It's not RTS lite, but just RTS different. A judgment on the game is going to require giving the title a chance and seeing how it shakes what Ensemble gave it over many hours. It could introduce a new form of RTS we haven't seen yet.

To be honest, I think anyone who's played advance wars knows an RTS can be brilliant on a console (albeit handheld). Obviously this needs a larger tactical scope, That'll make or break this for me.
kleg @ Jul 17th 2008 12:12PM
RTS?
WhoMe @ Jul 17th 2008 12:16PM
+1 Internets to the first guy who can tell this joker what the R stands for in RTS.

Fair enough.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 17th 2008 12:28PM
RTS = Real Time Strategy
Advance Wars is turn based.
:/
BioRebel @ Jul 17th 2008 1:35PM
Except that Advance wars WASN'T AN RTS. Rts means REAL TIME STRATEGY. Advance wars was turn based. And no, RTS games never do well on the console, people think they do well untill you try and play against someone who is using a mouse and keyboard.
dark_inchworm @ Jul 17th 2008 12:47PM
I fed you a vote, fatass
arrrgh @ Jul 17th 2008 12:47PM
+1 advance wars is an AMAZING series. Easily one of my favourite series on any system, let alone handhelds
dark_inchworm @ Jul 17th 2008 2:48PM
Uh, how did BioRebel's post get up there?
I feel unimportant. :'(
fred @ Jul 18th 2008 2:24AM
if you use the email system and validate it later it appears higher up but with the validation time

So pre-order now then, yes? ;)
TheSpiceMustFlow @ Jul 17th 2008 12:11PM
Guy, did you really need to spell out what "UI" means on a fucking video game blog? "User interface", or as the kids call it, "UI."
Douche.
RanWitScissorz @ Jul 17th 2008 12:14PM
Troll nothing to see here.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 17th 2008 12:14PM
I like how you're taking this as a personal insult or something.
Check this out - there are people, other than you, on the internet. Who may not know what UI means. I know, hard to swallow, right?
Knight Marquise @ Jul 17th 2008 12:18PM
Did you really need to post that comment? What's it like to be an angry little man on a video game blog?
How about you go back to bed and try getting up on the other side.
Duke @ Jul 17th 2008 12:24PM
"Douche."
Was that your signature line?
Gun Barrier (Gamer Tag) @ Jul 17th 2008 8:14PM
i didn't know what GUI/UI meant untill i went to wiki. :o
XIII @ Jul 17th 2008 12:11PM
That sounds great, but what about the multiplayer?...this is key to Halo. It was already announced that you can be the Covenant (and Flood is yet to be confirmed - expansion maybe), but can you have more than just 1v1 online matches?
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 17th 2008 12:21PM
"...this is key to Halo."
But how are Halo 1-3 players going to adapt to this shift in gameplay? I don't see it happening, for the most part
...unless there's a 'Jump around madly while spamming grenades' move accessed through the Y button
aristokrat @ Jul 17th 2008 12:44PM
One can only hope. That would make this a day 1 purchase.
Daniel @ Jul 17th 2008 12:13PM
WOW!! I really have high expectatives, after all Ensemble Studios is the one who is in charge of all this. The game looks pretty good, but i thought that may be it should be better whit a little more of Strategy involved...let's just wait.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 17th 2008 12:15PM
*waits for the consoles can't do RTS's comments*
umm....hello??? @ Jul 17th 2008 12:17PM
sooo....how soon does this hit retail stores?? I can't wait!!!!

"Joystiq E3 hands-on: Halo Wars (Xbox 360)"
Isn't it only on 360? Man I've tried RTS games but can never get into them. This one looks like it might be fun though. Nice preview Sliwinski.
Duke @ Jul 17th 2008 12:25PM
They are fun in small doses sometimes.
Duke @ Jul 17th 2008 12:25PM
BTW - sorry I didn't say hi last night, I had notifications off and didn't see you come online.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 17th 2008 12:33PM
Thats cool man, I just figured you were a raging alcoholic and were too plastered to even notice :P
I just thought I would say wuddup since its very wierd seeing the little "bloop" notification come on saying (NATO_Duke is online) on a weeknight.
ExMcCloud @ Jul 17th 2008 4:59PM
Fenix I need your gamertag son...Unless of course your Jostiq name and Gamertag are one and the same....Which then my statement just became null in-void
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 12:20PM
Too bad, Consoles can do RTS. Battalion Wars, C&C, EndWar, etc.
Burritoclock @ Jul 17th 2008 12:30PM
How can you list Endwars when it's not out yet? Or are you saying they can be done because you think the old phrase "consoles can't do RTS's" refers to just porting an RTS to the console? Everyone knows you can "put" an RTS on a console, will it play worth a damn is the question.
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 12:41PM
Because, EndWar seems like its going to be awesome. It's called a prediction
mike shea @ Jul 17th 2008 12:44PM
..he might have played the beta?
why so much hate, brahhhh
anways, im not much a fan of RTS on consoles.
but we'll see how it goes
Burritoclock @ Jul 17th 2008 12:54PM
Hate? Did it come across like that? If so, not my intention.
Getting back on topic, I loved RTS's back in the early C&C and warcraft days, but really have not enjoyed one since the first "new" C&C, I forget what it was called... Maybe the Halo will peak my interest again.
Mr Khan @ Jul 17th 2008 1:08PM
Can't believe you of all people also forgot: Pikmin
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 17th 2008 2:32PM
I know you didn't mean to come across as hateful. No, I have not played the BETA, but from hearing how good the voice controls work, it sounds like it would take some sort of major cock-up for this to be a bad game. But, then again, what is Ubisoft known for :P
MN Guy @ Jul 17th 2008 12:40PM
It seems pretty standard to me. You have a main base, buildings that make troops, tanks, and aerial units. There are special super-powers that recharge. You can upgrade facilities and units.
It is good to hear that the controls are tight. That's a big challenge on consoles. I like that it stays true to Halo roots to give some familiarity. If it is executed well, then it should be a good game.
The thing with an RTS game is that first impressions only let you know if it will be fun for the first dozen hours. But once the masses have time with the title, I'll be curious to see if it has balance. That is the real key. Will one side be clearly better? Will it devolve into a "race to build the most heavy tanks and laser turrets" as too many RTS games do? You really won't know that until it has been out for a while.
XIII @ Jul 17th 2008 12:50PM
Which brings up the question of whether or not there will be a map/scenario creator...As most RTS games do. This allows players to build custom levels or tactical situations that need to be overcome.
SkreeHunter @ Jul 17th 2008 12:49PM
You know I do I have a USB mouse.
Jfk Aok @ Jul 17th 2008 12:56PM
I saw vids of this and it looked puke inducing bad at this stage. Not so much the graphics (meh), but the gameplay looked unbearably generic.
Matthew @ Jul 17th 2008 1:00PM
Now begins the Mario-ization of the Halo franchise.
Next up, Halo Party and Super Halo Brawl.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 17th 2008 1:05PM
Is the flood also in this game? or is just the Covenant and UNCS?
If that's the case it will be like "Kidz:My First Starcraft"
Snowblind @ Jul 17th 2008 1:29PM
The Flood are almost definitely in. But either way, I'd take this over Starcraft anyday. Far more interesting universe, vehicles and story. In my opinion.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 17th 2008 1:46PM
The flood are not in this game.
Halo Wars takes place 20 years before the original Halo, the flood weren't discovered until the original Halo storyline.
Cyro @ Jul 17th 2008 1:47PM
The problem is that this took place 20 years before the First Halo. Which means that humans still haven't seen the flood. So I don't know how can this come into play..
:/
Huey2k2 @ Jul 17th 2008 1:47PM
"The Flood are almost definitely in."
Ensemble has stated many times that the flood are not in Halo Wars... and with good reason. Introducing the flood would totally mess up the Halo timeline.
zeldazeppelin @ Jul 17th 2008 2:51PM
you cant compare anything to starcraft man tat is blasphemy
Snowblind @ Jul 17th 2008 3:57PM
Ensemble have dodged the question on every account. There's nothing to say that THESE humans hadn't, especially if they're isolated from Earth. Alternatively, they could simply be in as an extra faction to play as in the multiplayer, there's no reason that it would have to make total sense there.
And we already know the Covenant had.
deadjesterx @ Jul 17th 2008 1:17PM
To be honest, when I first heard about this game I was skeptical. Based on this impression, though, it sounds like the game is coming along nicely.
I'm very pleased to see that they are approaching the RTS differently rather than trying to just copy the PC RTS formula. Those that say "consoles can't do RTS" are only half-correct. Consoles can't properly emulate the PC-style RTS. What they need is their own RTS style and it sounds like they may finally get it with this game. Just gonna have to wait and see if Ensemble pulls it off.
