What I've been trying to do is not give hand jobs to games. And did you even read my Banjo post? I was wildly enthusiastic about vehicle creation and reserved judgment on the game part because I didn't see enough of it.

Oh, and I had nothing but glowing comments for Dark Void.

Maybe, just maybe games this generation as a whole have been a disappointment and maybe just maybe the next slew of sequels will be more of the same.
If RE5 turns out exactly like RE4, I guess I'm ok with it. Not ecstatic like most out there.
However, I fear when RE6 and RE7 come out...
RE4 was long enough for me to get the experience I needed out of the game it was. I don't need a RE4 remake (with co-op) but I guess I'd like one. I'm very certain I'm not going to even WANT an RE4 remake remake...or a remake remake remake. I can say the same for Gears of War. Ok, make a second one, fine. But that's enough. You've obviously run out of ideas after the first one. So, make some dough on some nostalgia and then move on.
Even the E3 gameplay teaser during the 360 conference I was pretty underwhelmed about. Co-op seems nice...but co-op kinda ruins the suspense of it all. The graphics were hot, but even the animations and feel of the game seemed IDENTICAL to re4.

Yeah Justin, I read all your previews. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm just surprised at your reaction to these games thus far.

I myself think that people are expecting a lot nowadays. The time, effort, and money spent on the production of these games are a lot. Reviews always consist of the comparison of games more so than judgment of a game on it's own merits and what that title does to entice you. These games look highly entertaining to me... I just don't understand the demand for more, more, more, and more when playing sequels. Obviously there needs to be evolution between part 1,2,etc. But drastic reinvention with every new release seems too much to expect. For example.. yeah Gears of War 2 looks fantastic... but probably plays very much like Gears 1.... people may have a problem with that. You have a new story... new maps... new locations... familiar gameplay... what more do people want? Same goes for Halo 3. Now we have RE5, Banjo 3, Fable 2....I just think people are WAY too demanding these days.

It would make sense. They have the RE4 engine. They know it will sell in both Japan and America. Why not?

Is it really a bad thing to not be as innovative this time around? I mean, if it's RE 4 but with a good storyline, great graphics, destructible enviorments, online co-op and some other things that may or may not be revealed yet, what's the matter? As long as the Partner AI doesn't suck horribly when you're playing alone, I can't really see this game being any less than awesome.

This stuff leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And that taste seems to be returning very often this gen. Everybody's doing this and that's the problem. Everything now is a sequel to something and everything is essentially last gen + physics + co-op + shadows.
I've despised Final Fantasy since ff8 but I have to give them credit when it comes to the sequel concept. Every game has a new feel, new game mechanics and logic, new music, new "world" and characters.
They can do the same thing for RE, or even come up with a new (and decent) story wrapped around horror. RE4 reinvented the series. They can (and hopefully will) reinvent it for RE6.

I loved the control of RE4. Mainly. My only complaints were you couldn't move and shoot at the same time and you had to press the shoulder button to aim. This was only really a problem when the action got too close. I think the only way to improve the controls would be to adopt a 'Gears of War' type control scheme. Why not? Gears unapologetically "borrowed" from RE4. Heck, a cover system might even be a cool addition.

Do you think critics play too many games to be completely objective anymore? Do you think the joy gets sucked out as soon as it becomes a job?

Do you think if you worked with supermodels you might neglect 'the one' for you if you met her and she was visually sub-par; because you were so used to discounting anything but perfection?

Maybe critics (movie critics included) should have to work food service or in corporate america every other week. I know being critical is part of the job, but I still wrestle with this one.

Maybe I'll start a website of non-critical critics that only say good things about games and you'll have to decide how good or bad the game is by how much it seems like they are stretching to say something nice? I dunno.

What was this game about again?

Dude, there's no way you can call critics in this industry jaded. Maybe movie critics, but not game critics. If the game doesn't have blatant bugs and has "the pretty" and especially "the hype"...then it's a 8/10 or higher. If the game has enough hype...they're automatic 10's. They're not critics, they're "reviewers."
True critics would essentially eat the living crap out of games. Especially the ones that come out today.
Let me put it this way. There's no remake of "The Abyss" or "Abyss II" coming out anytime soon with newer graphics and sound. That would be a laughing stock to the movie industry. The latest Indiana Jones was SPAT ON by most critics DESPITE HYPE and DESPITE its budget.

I agree that it looks just like RE4 in almost every respect. That's not a bad thing, just predictable.

My question is, why are the walking animations still so "stiff"? I swear, it still looks like Cody walking around on the SNES version of Final Fight.

The thing with RE4 is that there was so much that could be done to improve the game over previous titles. The Resident Evil series had been stuck in archaic presentation and tank-like controls since its inception. It was due for an overhaul something fierce.

But RE4 played very well, so I wouldn't expect an overhaul. An evolution makes much more sense for the next iteration.

I doubt you'd be as impressed as someone who's played since the first or second RE.

It's story is as convoluted as MGSs, not that it's a bad thing. Just saying if you don't go for that type of story...

I myself even enjoyed RE:Outbreak, so who am I to judge?

RE4 was my first experience with the series. I didn't really enjoy playing it and found the controls frustrating. However, it is one of my favorite games to watch. A friend of mine who had no problem with the controls enjoyed the hell out of it. I enjoyed watching him play and just seeing the intense action on the screen.

RE4 was also my first Resident Evil experience (beyond the movie(s) and I ran out and bought a Game Cube just to have it all to myself. I never regretted it for a second. The Wii version is even better, imo, because of the controls (not sure why they took away the lazer sight, though).

I am left wondering what kind of a psychological impact it would have if they had named this one Resident Evil 4: (colon: something)... I dunno.

The problem is that RE DID re-invent the wheel, largely by throwing away everything that made it unique and different and it became a pretty generic (but well-produced) action/adventure game, rather than survival horror. RE5 is exactly like RE4, with a graphical upgrade. Is this horrible? No, but it's still not Resident Evil.

A pox on all of you who say anything bad about RE4.

I don't want shooting-while-walking. It's just one of the many gameplay mechanics that makes the RE series, well, Resident Evil.

I would like the ability to swap weapons without having to go into the menu though.

This is by far my most-wanted game. Though I refuse to play with computer-controlled co-op character. I'll force my friends to sit down and play co-op with me if I have to.

I hoping RE5 has a bunch of cool extras like RE4 did (Separate Ways, Assignment Ada, and Mercenaries). How cool would Mercenaries Mode be in co-op? The cool unlockables were also nice. I still remember how happy I was when I finally unlocked the Handcannon. Being able to take down El Gigante in two shots made subsequent playthroughs a blast.

'Well, as good as it is, it's also Resident Evil 4.'

I'd consider that a major plus, not a con.

The old RE style of gameplay grew stale after RE2 IMO.

I could play RE4 style RE games for the rest of my life and not complain once. I've beaten the GC ver on Normal + Pro well over a combined 11 times, and I've beaten the Wii ver on Normal + Pro well over a combined 8 times. I have done everything in the game possible, from finishing AA + SW to getting 60k with everyone in Mercs to get the Hand Cannon.

...Yet I still keep playing the game over and over and over again. Why? Because it's one of the best games ever made. I do hope they somehow incorporate a new version of Verdugo in RE5 since they've brought back the idea behind Dr. Salvador in RE5...Verdugo was a very scary boss battle to me, very intimidating to shoot the guy with everything except the CT or HC and end up using 100s of rounds and the guy just keeps on coming. (Assuming of course you didn't knock over the nitrogen tank first.)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I've played thru RE4 so many times it borders on being an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The brilliant thing about RE4 was it encouraged subsequent playthrus by offering cool incentives like extra weapons and costumes. I've played thru and unlocked everything on the Gamecube, PS2, and PC. I've definitely played RE4 more than any other game I've owned.

BTW, it never took me more than one shot to take down Verdugo. I always used the free Rocket Launcher you got from the glass display case in the castle. I tried to fight Verdugo with conventional weapons ONCE but it was too crazy. I guess I'm lazy.

Yeah, the first time I fought him, I wasted every round in my Striker (not with the exclusive though yet), all of my Broken Butterfly rounds, and most of my TMP rounds before he killed me.

The retry I froze him + blasted him with the free rocket launcher in the glass case as well and was like "oh, that was MUCH EASIER".

He dies (unfrozen) after a few seconds of tons of shots from the CT or 1 shot from the PRL. I haven't tried to kill him with the HC yet because he moves so quick...

I have 2 problems with the Resident Evil franchise as it stands now. One is with the franchise itself, and the other is with Resident Evil 5 in paticular.

1) I actually liked the old Resident Evil games like the remakes for gamecube as well as 2 and 3 that had the B horror movie scares with moodie music and the BOO!! gotcha moments, as well as taking the most vile and disgusting species from the insect and animal kingdoms and mutating them to gigantic sizes, like spiders, which oooooh do I hate, and I actually liked the shuffling zombies and don't see why they don't still have a place in this franchise. But I digress, because since Resident Evil 4, that's just not the type of game this franchise wants to be anymore sadly.

2) Resident Evil 5 doesn't seem like a full-fledged sequel, but rather an enhanced add-on to Resident Evil 4. Kind of like 4.5 if you will. One of the biggest complaints I have about what i've seen so far from Resident Evil 5 is that it's supposed to take place in Africa, totally different continent and totally different people than the Spanish villagers from the previous installment. So why is there yet again another chainsaw weilding, potato-sack-wearing character in this version of the game. Is there a requirement for one of these guys on every continent. It's repetitive and serves to hurt the game more than help it, by making it feel like Resident Evil 4 again instead of being its own game. They should be creating new guys to scare the hell out of us, not just recreating the same guy with a slightly different look.

I think this game will be fun, but seeing as how this game will come out next year, a full 4 years after Resident Evil 4's initial release on the gamecube, I don't see enough changes and revolutionary steps to justify the game being the way it currently is for that amount of time. I can absolutely simpathize with Justin on this in saying that I was hoping, actually, expecting a sequel that truly distinguished itsef from the previous installment and made it feel like it's own beast all together.
