Kazunori Yamauchi: More Prologue, no GT5 soon, GT PSP still coming

In the meantime, Polyphony will continue to expand Prologue with additional cars, tracks, and features. Yamauchi couldn't speak to specific plans, but mentioned that an new update is planned for the near future.
With all of the work his company is putting into the next console GT installment, Yamauchi tells us that it hasn't forgotten the long-delayed Gran Turismo 4 Mobile for PSP. He confirms that the game – originally announced at E3 2004 – is still actively in development, although it isn't planned for release until after GT5. That would be 2011 for those with pen and calendar in hand.

Jim Halpert DM @ Jul 17th 2008 9:15AM
GT PSP was announced when PSP came out right? How long ago was that?
spyker @ Jul 17th 2008 9:48AM
Well....

As long as these are good GT5p updates I guess I can wait.... Like damage, cars, and tracks :D.
Jim Halpert DM @ Jul 17th 2008 9:50AM
I know...it was a rhetorical question.
unrelated @ Jul 17th 2008 9:16AM
Just give me the Nuerburgring and no one gets hurt.
Ethan @ Jul 17th 2008 9:16AM
Maybe they should get some staff that don't have OCD. Same applies to Shenmue.

2010 - LOL

Seriously... I was thinking the same thing. Those programmers must be loving their job security.
TLSBill @ Jul 17th 2008 9:17AM
Gran Turismo PSP is NEVER going to happen, can't we just stick a fork in it after 4 years? How about putting GT2 up on the Playstation store as a PS1 classic. Then we can finally play GT on the PSP.
pasht @ Jul 17th 2008 9:17AM
You know why I bought a PSP at launch? Because of that E3 coverage of GT4:Mobile. They had box and disc art, and a couple screens, and an interview with Kaz saying it was like 80% complete. I bought Lumines and played the crap out of it, but that's the only PSP game I ever bought. Kept it at FW1.5 so I could use emulators, and that's all it ended up being for me for 2 years; a portable nes and snes. Thank you, Polyphony Digital.
TLSBill @ Jul 17th 2008 9:20AM
Remember the all white PSP with the GT4 logo on it as well? http://www.psp411.com/img/overlay-expand.gif
rjj130 @ Jul 17th 2008 9:45AM
I ditto your comment, minus the Lumines part.
I eventually bought and returned several games and to this day THE only game I have for my PSP is GTA - Liberty City Stories. I haven't touched my PSP for months. Even took it on vacation and played Tetris on my GBA SP instead!!!
FireStiq @ Jul 17th 2008 10:35AM
@pasht
I'm in the same boat as you, the only game I'm interested in is a Patapon.
@TLSBill
Thats false advertising me thinks. Sony and their promises "SIGH" their just digging themselves into a giant hole.
Pedobear @ Jul 17th 2008 3:33PM
I only own Final Fantasy Tactics, and use my custom firmware for everything else.
AoE @ Jul 17th 2008 4:40PM
@pasht,
That's your bad for buying something based on promises Sony made at an E3. ONLY trust Sony's E3 announcements if the announcement in question ends with "and it's available now!"
Bucfann @ Jul 17th 2008 9:17AM
Geez are any of Sonys "blockbuster" titles coming out before 2010?
And they will still end up as just good games.
giantenemycrab @ Jul 17th 2008 3:42PM
At this rate, I'm not even sure Sony will still have any money when 2010 rolls around.
tcc3 @ Jul 17th 2008 9:18AM
I hear GT 5 comes with a copy if Duke Nukem Forever.
Oh yeah, I went there. =)
Rafael Illan @ Jul 17th 2008 5:09PM

RC @ Jul 17th 2008 9:21AM
Punisher, GT5 prologue is awesome, get it.
Scotto @ Jul 17th 2008 9:22AM
$10 says "Gran Turismo 5" the product never comes out. They just add stuff to Prologue for a year or so through updates - some free, some not - and then call it a day.
I'm marking my words right now. The fact that he wouldn't even say "probably 2009" for crying out loud, has sold me on this hypothesis.
Who knew it could take so many years for them to make another car racing game. And in a fraction of the time, Codemasters has managed to put out two great ones... with damage modeling, to boot!

Vcize @ Jul 17th 2008 10:41AM
Haha, yeah.
I used to be a bigtime sim racing, GT guy, but holy crap Grid is an awesome game and has totally won me over.
ExMcCloud @ Jul 17th 2008 11:36AM
Yeah and isn't Microsoft putting out Forza 3 next year.....And Polyphony Digital is still on 5? Actually lets be frank 5 is never coming out...Prolouge is 5 and they are just gonna do updates....And that sir is a disappointment....Sigh
Microswirl (MKWii:1676- 4270-3674) @ Jul 17th 2008 2:49PM
It's funny when someone makes a bet that something NEVER happens. Think about it. How long would you have to wait to verify that you won the bet? I'll take that bet. See you in year infinity.
browntown @ Jul 17th 2008 9:27AM
If new tracks are free, cool, but i really want the full game, i was hoping 09.
FoxHoundADAM @ Jul 17th 2008 9:29AM
Which comes out first FF XIII of GT4.....my money is on the end of days.
Lekko @ Jul 17th 2008 9:10PM
I'll take your money, and you can kick yourself for that typo.
j.howlett @ Jul 17th 2008 9:29AM
this looks nice but i suck at GT games. i only have 2 cars on GTHD Concept. i did rather well in the ps1 predecessor to GT, toon town racing. its still on my memory card.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 17th 2008 9:37AM
It looks like they're just sellng you GT5 piecemeal. GT5 will likely be Prologue and the additions on one disk.
Miguel @ Jul 17th 2008 9:50AM
WTF? I want GT5 now! Not the prologue. What is taking so long?!
voodoo_craig @ Jul 17th 2008 2:15PM
There's two Japanese guys sitting in a shed coding both games on their own.
God knows what the rest of Polyphony are up to.....
Lekko @ Jul 18th 2008 6:03PM
they're doing "research" testing the driving physics of really really fast, expensive cars.
Wouldn't you, if you had that kind of access?
horngreen @ Jul 17th 2008 9:57AM
Wow and people complain about paying for LIVE? What will this demo of GT5 cost in the end? I doubt anything will be free except maybe the damage WHICH WILL NEVER HAPPEN ANYWAY! So by 2010 folks will have spent $60-100 on a demo and it's add ons only to be hit with another $60 for the "rest" of the game. Maybe they will do this for Killzone 2 as well. I could see it now, $1 for each finger on your character!
Duke @ Jul 17th 2008 10:26AM
Its lame that the game is taking so long, but you need to drop the demo bullshit. A demo is not a game where you can save, compare stats, etc. This isn't a demo, so get over it and just slam it for valid reasons.
joshua @ Jul 17th 2008 7:30PM
The Japanese version got at the least 3 major updates, for free, so I don't see any reason why they would charge for additional content. Sony certainly hasn't said it, and neither has Polyphony. This is pure fanboy conjecture bullshit.
klitorisaurus @ Jul 18th 2008 2:27AM
Small fraction of real game = DEMO
I don't care how you want to twist it.
Trev @ Jul 17th 2008 10:07AM
OK, that's stupid. I have nothing but admiration for the lengths they go to to ensure that Gran Turismo is the most authentic driving simulator they can make, but don't focus on Prologue!
Make the full game. No one is going to buy 3 different Prologue DLC packs.
Mike-453 @ Jul 17th 2008 10:14AM
Or, the question may be, what'll be out first.
Forza Motorsport 4, or Gran Turismo 5?
And are the improvements GT5 will have over Forza 2 really worth waiting three years for?
[.sm0ke.] @ Jul 17th 2008 10:28AM
You're kidding, right? Forza 6 will be out before GT5.
dark_inchworm @ Jul 17th 2008 11:02AM
Transportation devices with wheels will be phased out before GT5 releases.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jul 18th 2008 6:51AM
We're including the American auto industry in that prediction, yes?
3cubed (4squared plus 2squared) @ Jul 17th 2008 10:22AM
This is good news. It means I won't be getting a PS3 until at least 2o10 or unless something else comes out that excites me.
[.sm0ke.] @ Jul 17th 2008 10:34AM
Well that's stupid.
na2ru1 @ Jul 17th 2008 10:42AM
really need to start pulling their act together and start to think for at least 1 second how their customers might feel(impatient?)this may be art but its also business.i have GT5P and still going through trying to earn enough for that f1 car. but i want the complete package
Talryyn @ Jul 17th 2008 10:43AM
I normally wait for GT to get the latest PS, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait.
It just does not make sense, what is Sony doing here?!? These long waits, are they doing it so they get 10 years out of the PS3???
FireStiq @ Jul 17th 2008 10:50AM
I guess Sony wasn't joking when they made that ad.
PLAY Be3ond... literally, sorry had to do it.
Misfit Toy @ Jul 17th 2008 11:12AM
Gran Turismo games aren't even that much fun. Granted, I played several hours of them before, but the model they have doesn't hold up to todays more entertaining driving games. Forza and GRID are all you need to get your driving fix.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 17th 2008 11:21AM
I can understand people who don't like GT games. Because some people don't like sim racers. But then you say you say Forza does it for you?
I'll grant that Forza has a better physics simulation, so let's not argue about that.
What is it about the gameplay ('model') that Forza offers over GT? To me, both are just games where you complete a long list of events. Which can easily be boring. It's not like either adds a story mode like TOCA Race Driver 2 has.
So, what is it that makes GT boring and Forza not to you?
