PlayStation Home's public areas region locked
Looking to go virtual bowling with your South African friends in PlayStation Home? Think again! According to a Sony representative at E3, Home will be region locked. While you can visit anyone's private apartment, all public pavilions are restricted by your geographical area.

It's sad that a group of friends does not have PS3's? Frankly, I don't think it's anything to cry about.

Actually, Sony most likely has the tech to do region-targeted marketing where different ads will show depending on your IP's location.
This is probably to ensure a quality experience in Home. An example could be to prevent lag when interacting with people. Another could be for licensing/regulatory issues when showing video like trailers, movies and music vids when it's not approved for that region/country. Sony probably doesn't want someone walking around with half the vid screens saying "can't access content from this region".

Like say Rockstar advertises GTA in the US home region, but that same space is taken by some Gundam game in the Japan region. Rockstar paid for advertisements to the US home players and paid for it by the popularity and traffic in the home region, so they don't want all their potential viewers to go elsewhere.
Sorry if that sounds confusing, I'm terrible with wording.
My guess is that it may be more because games are released in different regions at different times they may not want people to be able to see trophies or minigames or whatever else they could have planned for games months before it ever even comes out in their region, if at all.
So many things I like about Home, so many things I don't like. The one that I dislike the most is the unknown that every lobby might be filled with "US!"...
I shudder to think what would happen! ;)

You can still meet up with you friends in your apartment.
Or you can not use HOME and continue on with XMB like you are now.

Damn it Sony, first you kill backwards compatibility altogether and now this?

I say, just charge for the service (PSN) so I don't have to endure delays and watch home be perverted into an advertisement haven.
Hell, if they would charge, they might actually have a compelling reason to launch it.

It's great that despite having a US address, US credit card, Creating my account in the US on a US PS3 and 360, I'm stuck with whatever they plan to offer for italians.
And since Italy is such a wonderful place for violating copyright, I'm guessing the offerings will be slim.
Region encoding fucks over 10s of thousands of Americans living overseas.
Fuck region encoding and Fuck you MS and Sony for implementing it.

2. If you want open regions, Sony has to buy servers. Servers cost money. You'll have to pay a fee to use them.
Either you have free PSN and this or you pay for it and get better service.
