Portfolio.com just published a short excerpt of its interview with EA boss John Riccitiello who tells the site that it's "got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development" including "the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare." One doesn't need to connect too many dots to arrive at the conclusion that BioWare is returning to the Star Wars universe with a Knights of the Old Republic MMO.
Of course, this product has been rumored for ... well, for a long time. Separately confirming a BioWare / LucasArts collaboration and a BioWare MMO project lead to certain obvious conclusions and countless other rumors and leaks seemed to do everything but confirm (and some denied) the project's existence. Though it would appear Riccitiello wasn't quite ready to put a name on that project – it's Portfolio.com connecting those dots – by referencing that this is the game that "people are dying for us to talk to them about" he clearly seems to be pointing to KOTOR.
[Update: We've just spoken with N. Evan Van Zelfden, the writer of the report, who told us that when asked specifically if this game was "KOTOR Online", Riccitiello responded unequivocally, "Yes." So, there you have it – sounds like we can take off our skeptical glasses.]

OH MY GOD YES!!!!!!!!
Despite my extreme excitement, it is still a little disappointing that it's an MMO and not a direct KOTOR 3 single player sequel. MMO's always do a terrible job of telling and furthering stories.

I'm looking forward to this. Bioware makes quality games if you ask me. I'm just not a big fan of EA.

I wonder how you would get the great bioware narrative with an MMO.
As great as some stories are in MMOs they're generally not very strong story wise due to the sheer number of people.
I'd be happy with Lucasarts just letting SWG go back to pre NGE (kinda liked CU...). and having another KOTOR would be nice, with multiplayer aspects (2+ player RPGs FTW).
Still i ownder how long it'll take to get this out? My bets are 2011.

i fail to see how games that make more use of complex moral decisions and interesting dialogue will translate to the MMO world.

An MMO? Weaaaaaaak. I love the KotOR series but I'll skip this and keep my fingers crossed for an actual sequel.

The story progression is what was great about KOTOR, you can only get that with a offline RPG. MMO's are terrible. I mean how are you supposed to throw in twists like the KOTOR developments in a MMO.
Clicking to kill 500 bantha just to level up your chracter so you can fight some jackass who has been killing you because he found Phuket Fett Armour isn't fun.

omg omg omg! I have been missing MMOs since I quit WoW and Warhammer looks kinda cool, but I am really excited to see what Bioware does. I love everything they do.

RETARDED on several accounts. whoever thinks this is a good idea is delusional.
first, it would be awful like Star Wars Galaxies when they did the holocron thing--actually worse. i know this sounds totally geeky, but i like the star wars mythos. to have an online world of 5000 jedi running around is retarded.
second, even though i credit Bioware for awesome products, it would suck in MMO form. it would be just another failed attempt at a WoW clone. you are gonna sit there for hours grinding away for lvlage, doing the same quests over and over, doing raids and arguing over l33t lightsaber drops. the pvp will probably suck too.
hate to be a downer, but thats just the facts.
if Bioware decided to make a KOTOR III that was a clone of NWN1, now that WOULD kick ass--having a toolset to create your own star wars campaigns...but im a dreamer.

They aren't "Just the facts", its pure opinion and blind guessing.
Lets wait and see what they come up with, maybe it will suck, or just maybe, it will be the best MMO ever written.

I completely agree with Lehel. All the people here who are so excited need to remember what made KOTOR so great. It was the STORY!!! MMO for the most part have no story. They are virtual pissing contest to see who can acquire the most crap.
I am SO sick of every gaming company out there think that making something multi-player online='better'. It doesn't! Some games and game types were ment to be single player, story driven adventures. And when you take that and make it a multi-player swag grab, it will FAIL on epic purportions.
And for all the people who still aren't convinced that this KOTOR MMO is a sucky idea, do me a favor...
Close your eys, and imagine KOTOR's story arc + Mass Effects graphics(yeah, I know some of you just wet your pants...its okay)
Now realize that a game like that is what BioWare COULD be working on instead of this junk.

If it was anyone other than Bioware, I'd probably agree.
But remember, this IS Bioware, if anyone can pull it off and create an amazing game, it would be them.
I'll reserve my final judgement for when I see the finished product.

It doesn't matter what they do with the storyline, it won't be KOTOR. Not when you're constantly watching your back to keep the 12 year-old, sociopathic grind-freaks off your ass.
Game developers need to pry their heads out and wake up to the fact that not all games can be translated into successful MMO's (just so some company can reap monthly fees), regardless of how well the original game(s) did. I expect a game series to evolve, but into an MMO... no thanks.
I care about the story, the character dev, and the other things that made the series worth playing so many times. NOT pvp/pve, grind, grind, grind (ad nauseum).
KOTOR MMO - Bad move. Another one bites the dust...

It's upsetting to see so many KOTOR fans ticked off because this isn't KOTOR3.
Bear in mind this is LucasArt's baby. If George hadn't asked Bioware to do it, there would be no KOTOR MMO nor KOTOR3.
Give us MMO SW fans our day. For someone like me, this is unrelated to maintaining KOTOR storyline richness. This is about finding the best company with the best track record for the highest possible quality SW MMO, not only in creation, but in maintenance.
George is very timid now to trust a MMO company with his baby after SOE dropped the ball so notoriously. BioWare has this crazy good reputation for treating his baby with respect. That's why BioWare was chosen. It's not an attempt to create a KOTOR sequal, but to place his baby in a proven environment so that us MMO fans can have a place we call home on the day of release and for years afterward.

Eureka!!! For those of you KOTOR purest, I am sorry , but I am so happy to hear this is going to be an MMO. I am an Ex-SWG refugee/junky. Try going a few years without your fix. It is time for a great Star Wars MMO.
Bioware has a proven track record and I , like so many other MMO enthusiast am ecstatic over this news.
Someone commented that they were a bit of a geek and into the Star Wars mythos. They mentioned seeing thousands of Jedi running around would be plain stupid and not fit into the Star Wars Mythos. You call yourself a Star Wars Geek? LOL! KOTOR in the Star Wars Timeline takes place when the Galaxy was ripe with Jedi fighting countless Sith. Learn your timelines mate.
Lastly, I hope they do not rush to put this out just to make a quick buck. I want a persistent , detailed, Star Wars Univers. I want a crafting system that will rival the old SWG pre-nge crafting system. I want player made cities, guilds and large inter galactic battles between Jedi and Sith. Please Bioware, Deliver!!!
All that and a cookie too. :)

I'm stoked about it being an MMO. I have nothing against MMOs in general. I've been playing WoW since it came out, but the KotOR games beat the shit out of wow any day. The problem is that you play through each of the KotOR games maybe 3 or 4 times, and then never touch them again. so being the Star Wars nerd that I am, I'm way into the idea of a persistent world set in the Star Wars universe, especially in the KotOR era, that I can play all the time and not just be playing the same single player story over and over. It's the closest thing I can get to actually living in the Star Wars universe. Sooo... Yes, please.
