PS3 video store not coming to PAL regions in 2008

PS3-owning movie buffs across the globe were exuberant upon the unveiling of the PlayStation Network's video delivery service, and the announcement that it would be made available, well, now. Unless, of course, you live in Europe, Australia, or one of the many other PAL regions of the world -- according to Sony Europe exec David Reeves, Sony won't be getting their Blockbuster on in PAL territories in 2008.
Reeves promised that "dates and content for the video download service will be announced later this year," somewhat ensuring a lengthy delay. However, he did mention the launch of Go!View, the recently released European television and movie download service for the PSP, as something of a consolation. We would have preferred a promise to exclude any films written and directed by the Wayans brothers from the service's PAL incarnation.

Oh, don't bother asking, it seems as though no one can hear us. It's baffling that in the multiple stories about the PSN video store, Canada hasn't been mentioned once. It's like no one at Joystiq knows the country exists.
GenBanks @ Jul 19th 2008 4:26PM
Well we didn't want it anyway!
*secretly cries*
John @ Jul 19th 2008 4:28PM
Maybe this is why we get playtv while the US doesnt
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jul 19th 2008 11:27PM

Hixx @ Jul 19th 2008 4:30PM

Now I exspect to see all the fan boys and girls from Major Nelson's site who were bitching about a game about US political animals comming to Europe so they were going to sell their 360s and buy ps3s to come in here and scream thay they are now going to sell their PS3s and buy WIis.....
GenBanks @ Jul 19th 2008 5:21PM

j.howlett @ Jul 19th 2008 5:36PM

Jakka @ Jul 19th 2008 4:39PM

browntown @ Jul 19th 2008 5:02PM
how many people will actually use this. I rather buy movies i like than rent them, especially since an hd rental is so expensive, and i could just bike for 5 mins and go rent a dvd for 2 bucks.
Deaf RaGe @ Jul 19th 2008 5:06PM
It's not available in Canada either.
Stoo @ Jul 19th 2008 6:03PM
Its all about film distribution rights. Im sure if Sony could Canada, the PAL regions and anywhere else that would spend money on this would get it at the same time.
The same thing happened with the XBL movie service. For PAL regions anyway, Im not sure if it was delayed in Canada.
MinorHavoc @ Jul 19th 2008 7:00PM
I can understand issues with distribution rights for other studios, but Columbia Pictures is owned by Sony. There shouldn't be a problem distributing those films, right?
COKTOE @ Jul 19th 2008 5:16PM
Yeah,I want to know when Canada gets the service.Damn Sony, tell us already.
Michael @ Jul 19th 2008 7:00PM
Well, after waiting for a day for my HD rental of 7.7GBs (I have a 10MB connection and download a 1.05GB off of iTunes in 20 mins) I can say that I am not too happy with the implementation. Especially with the fact that there is no warning prompt when you press play. You'd better hope it is almost finished download because as soon as you hit X the timer runs down. Try that after only getting to 7%. The movie expired before we had to to watch after the download completed. That is not service. Although, they did have Matrix Revelutions in HD so I am still interested, but this is a blow in my opinion. Hope it is better for you guys when you get it.

Sorry, for all the grammatical errors. A little booze goes a long way!
Solid Chief @ Jul 19th 2008 8:09PM
I wonder if Sony can beat Microsoft by getting a movie service in Australia...
Seriously, three years of the Xbox and nothing here
;_;

uh.....sure buddy.....whatever you say.....
gbutler @ Jul 19th 2008 10:10PM
Why can't these companies wait until they actually have finished their product/service to launch it? Is it really that hard to wait just a month longer?
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jul 19th 2008 11:33PM
as a PS3 owner i can say, im sick of fucking waiting. if its functional, give it to me now as long as your going to keep working on it. if it was a game, sure take your time, but a feature like this? just get it out.
Marc Perrot @ Jul 19th 2008 10:14PM
Why do they never include Canada when they say where the service isn't available? Are you ignoring us Joystiq?
Poisoned Al @ Jul 19th 2008 10:27PM
Oh well, looks like I'll just have to stick to Pirate Bay see how these fuck-bends don't want my money, which is worth considerably more then the US dollar at the moment.
Darkbhudda @ Jul 20th 2008 1:44AM
PS3-owning movie buffs across the globe were NOT exuberant. We knew this would happen.
Dell @ Jul 21st 2008 4:20AM
But I like movies :(
John @ Jul 21st 2008 4:42AM
Dear Sony, and MS for that matter.
I am a US citizen serving abroad in the military.
I would love to be able to pay you for these services.
You have my american billing address.
You have my american credit card.
Why are you telling me you'd rather I pirate all these products?
