First video of Sony's The Last Guy
If Sony's clever, it's built the game to change over time as the real-world cityscape does – but that's just our hopefulness. If not, maybe it's saving that for a sequel prequel called The Next-to-Last Guy. While we dream, The Last Guy will hit the Japanese PlayStation Store on July 31 for 500 Yen (about $4.75). It looks like a totally bonkers romp that'd go over well in the West with some localized city maps.

I could not tell what the hell was going on in that clip. Though did I see giant enemy crabs in the last part??
Negativecool @ Jul 21st 2008 9:34PM
Giant enemy crabs?
...
Do they have a weakpoint?
GoldenS1104 @ Jul 21st 2008 7:00PM
This looks interesting. I have to say, the showing of XBLA and PSN titles since E3 has impressed me more than the showing of many of the full-fledged retail games.
Wonderflex @ Jul 21st 2008 7:05PM
Now if there was only some way to use an American credit card to purchase titles off the Japanese PSN. JPSN cards aren't the easiest to get all the time.
If anybody knows how to use an american credit card to charge on my Japanese account, please let me know.

This is the fruition of Snake and Ms. Pac man one night out.....

This really looks like a game that needs to be in HD to tell wtf is going on.
Ender @ Jul 21st 2008 7:13PM
This looks like it could be fun but I hope its easier to see your character than what is shown in the video. I couldn't tell where the guy was or where he was running to. Also what exactly is following him?
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 7:18PM
Bugs and eye balls. If you have a PSP you can already play something like this in Work Time Fun.
In Yu-gi-oh GX 2 for the PSP there is a minigame like this except is very lame and I would reccomend to stick with Baito Hell 2000 version.
Benny @ Jul 21st 2008 7:48PM
Isn't it just a great big line of 'people' that you have to get to the Escape Zone to save? All the weird baddies are just trying to devour your characters.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 7:15PM
Less like Pacman and more like Baito Hell 2000 (Work Time Fun)
aristokrat @ Jul 21st 2008 7:16PM
That's a pretty cool idea. Also, I imagine it saved them a lot of money in level design. This had better be $5, not $10, cause dev costs look pretty low here, but if it is, I'd buy it. I wonder if you can do any city, because it would also be pretty neat to do rural 'stages' also, to really get that War of the Worlds feel (the novel version, not the citified Cruise movie).
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Jul 21st 2008 11:24PM
Not really, because sure they're using existing roads, but how do you make those roads fun? You cut off other portions of the city and focus on the ones with interesting intersections.
That kind of choice-making can translate into a really boring level or a really good one. High quality level design is still involved.
Ender @ Jul 21st 2008 7:16PM
Interesting idea but i hope it's a lot easier to see your character when you're actually playing it. Right now it seems impossible to tell where he is or where hes going. Also, what exactly is following him?
Ender @ Jul 21st 2008 7:17PM
Sorry for the double post. I didn't think the last one got posted...
Lone Starr @ Jul 21st 2008 7:18PM
If I ever go to a strip club, I hope the girls are dancing to that music.
TwEE @ Jul 21st 2008 7:23PM
Little hard to see because of the youtube video, but looks like a cool idea. Reminds me of rampage just the a bit..
It would be way better if they copied the whole nintendo/namco pacman dealie .. a few players control monsters on their psps with a limited view of the action, while somebody eles controls the humans on the tv..
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Jul 21st 2008 7:32PM
Very interesting. I hope this does release in the US soon and also that the PSN cards release or I won't be able to get it.
Erwos @ Jul 21st 2008 7:58PM
Talk about wasted potential. :-P
SonofaGunner @ Jul 21st 2008 8:31PM
If anyone has played Work Time Fun(WTF) on the PSP they'd know what inspired this game.

Between the bad techno and the rainbow meter at the bottom of the screen, I thought I stumbled into a gay bar!
Roto13 @ Jul 21st 2008 9:36PM
What I want to see is an adventure game (let's say) that not only uses Google Earth satalite images to give an overhead view of an area, but uses the building data to create replicas of the area in full 3D. Textures could be handled as user created content, stored on a master server for everyone to download and apply.
I can dream. :P

"If Sony's clever, it's built the game to change over time as the real-world cityscape does – but that's just our hopefulness."
I'm supposed to come back to the game 5-20 years down the road just to find out what one changed building has done?
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Jul 21st 2008 11:25PM
They better have Godzilla in it.
gott @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:16AM
Before the Cell, this game wasn't possible

Was I the only one hoping for an episodic RPG based on the Y: Last Man graphic novels?
Shaq-Fu @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:38AM
I was kinda hoping that they would reveal that its actually Leisure Suit Larry: The Last Guy on Earth. Honestly, how many of you would buy that instead of this (based on the trailer)?
farfisa @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:58AM
And to think it was all programmed with a couple of calculators in the Himalayas!
Titanium_Orchid @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:33PM
I think your character runs around the city collecting people.
So to answer your question, it might be friendly people that are following him.
rockintom @ Jul 23rd 2008 11:29AM
Popcorn, much?
vaylen @ Jul 31st 2008 3:08PM
You can download this now, it's called "Rub-a-dub" on PSN.
