Sega confirms Sonic and the Black Knight, Spring 2009
Sonic continues his storybook adventures with Sonic and the Black Knight, a Wii-exclusive Arthurian sequel to the Arabian Nights-infused Sonic and the Secret Rings. In this installment, Sonic picks up a sword "to aid in his effort to save the day," causing us to wonder aloud (stop staring at us!) if Black Knight could be one of the first third-party games to utilize the Wii MotionPlus.
Oh, and far be it from us to tell Sega how to run its show but, despite the opportunity provided by a recent industry event, the first you'll see of Sonic and the Black Knight will be within the pages of next month's Nintendo Power before its release in Spring 2009.

Cause we all know a sword is exactly what Sonic needs this generation.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 1:07PM
I know is ridiculous.
Sega gave him a sword, what he really needed was a chainsaw to impress us.
Jhongerkong @ Jul 21st 2008 1:22PM
Dont forget more shitty friends, can't get enough of those.
samfish @ Jul 21st 2008 3:31PM
Maybe the sword IS a shitty friend.
WiiSkii @ Jul 21st 2008 12:35PM
ummmm.....snother sucky sonic title? woo friggin hoo
FOXHOUND @ Jul 21st 2008 12:36PM
Running with scissors = bad
Running with Excalibur = A new Wii Game featuring Sonic the "Looking for Decent Work" Hedgehog
Either way, Spring '09 is looking pretty stellar. I might just give out gift cards this year for the holidays since more interesting gaming stuff will be out after it.
Mr Khan @ Jul 21st 2008 10:25PM
Esp. for Wii. You're going from Wii Music + Animal Crossing to The Conduit and Black Knight
Wiinterfang @ Jul 21st 2008 12:37PM
Once the initial Shock warms up, I'm kinda liking the idea, Secret rings was cool and that sword looks pretty nifty.
Henry @ Jul 21st 2008 12:39PM
At Sega, we don't learn from mistakes, we actively reiterate them!
fyreblazer @ Jul 21st 2008 1:02PM
Giving Sonic a gimmick hasn't worked the past times? We'll just try again. It'll stick one of these times...
Marty @ Jul 21st 2008 1:37PM
Isn't doing something over and over and expecting a different result one of the first signs of insanity?
riggs @ Jul 21st 2008 12:48PM
possibly the only time i have ever felt a game will suck from a picture.
riggs @ Jul 21st 2008 12:49PM
and also i remember someone on here saying how the wii will make developers change their games to accommodate the system, i thought they would be wrong but damn.
Xoviet chiK @ Jul 21st 2008 12:49PM
I was kinda hoping Bioware wanted to do more Sonic RPG. Heavily modified Aurora Engine maybe?
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/bioware-considering-wii-psp-development/
Oh well. Seems like a step in the wrong direction after many praised Secret Rings for being a step in the right.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 1:14PM
To be honest many of you seem to be judging the game for the image of Sonic with a sword.
I'm going to wait for a gameplay video before judging.
If it is like the Secret Rings with a better control I think it will be fine.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 21st 2008 1:47PM
Apparently I am the only person who really disliked the secret rings.
Why can't they just go back to 2d sonics?
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 2:10PM
Isn't bad if you give it a chance also I got it very cheap.
I hated it at first but it get's better but this is coming from a guy that also liked Alone in the Dark maybe I just have a lot of patience.
iofthestorm @ Jul 21st 2008 4:10PM
Secret Rings was OK, but the controls kind of sucked. Gameplay was more or less essentially 2D style but meh. I got pissed after trying the one windy level where you jump on top of weird dinosaur skeleton things because I kept barely missing, so I just stopped playing it.
Shadow El @ Jul 21st 2008 4:26PM
If it's like Secret Rings, but the controls aren't total shit, I'll get it.
But I'm afraid they WILL be total shit. D:
mrSimon @ Jul 21st 2008 12:54PM
Not even 8horns could rape my childhood as much as this
fred @ Jul 21st 2008 5:07PM
I know what you're talking about and it frightens me a little bit.
Wiinterfang @ Jul 21st 2008 12:57PM
Don't be so uptight people, The idea does sound pretty cool.
Antonio @ Jul 21st 2008 1:02PM
Somebody wish for a mountain of tissues so I can cry away all my tears for this once-great franchise.
Xoviet chiK @ Jul 21st 2008 1:04PM
Win/Win SEGA:
License Rocket Knight Adventures / Sparkster from Konami. Everyone walks away happy.
fred @ Jul 21st 2008 5:08PM
I agree so much that it PHYSICALLY HURTS.
AwesomeTown @ Jul 21st 2008 1:12PM
I don't mind taking a character out of their element and making a different kind of game (hell, I like Star Fox adventures). But the game has to not suck, and Sega hasn't proved they can do that yet.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 1:22PM
Eh can't be worst than Sonic 2006, that was the bottom of the barrel (Hopefully).
Secret rings wasn't bad, maybe this will be an improvement.
What I really hated about the 3D Sonic games and Ds games was the inclusion of more un-needed characters.
The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Jul 21st 2008 1:23PM
This is the kind of news that would have made Nintendo's E3 Conference a lot more exciting.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 21st 2008 1:30PM
Nothing could've save that train wreck except a new Zelda game or a New Star fox but yeah it would've made the conference a bit less painful to watch.
Jhongerkong @ Jul 21st 2008 1:23PM
So, is Martin Lawrence making a cameo appearance in this game?
Pureshooter @ Jul 21st 2008 1:24PM
I'm still waiting for them to mount torpedoes and depth charges to Ecco.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 21st 2008 7:09PM
I approve.
LiK @ Jul 21st 2008 1:34PM
yay, another bad Sonic game. i guess SEGA forgot that all we want is the old school Sonic back. PASS!
Marty @ Jul 21st 2008 1:34PM
For the love of all that is good, can we just get a regular, side-scrolling, FUN, Sonic game, PLEASE?
M_H @ Jul 21st 2008 1:48PM
I'll give it half a chance. If they go for a Devil May Cry or Shinobi style of fast paced fighting, it could work.
Zertoss @ Jul 21st 2008 2:22PM
Nintendo: "Here's some classic Mario!"
Gamers: "Fuck! Give us something different!"
Sega: "Here's Sonic doing something different!"
Gamers: "Fuck! Give us some classic Sonic!"
Ha ha ha! Multiple standards.
-Vexx- @ Jul 21st 2008 2:30PM
Wow. that makes too much sense lol
Sora @ Jul 21st 2008 3:08PM
That's because whenever Nintendo does something different, they usually hit the jackpot. Sega, on the other hand.....
Antonio @ Jul 21st 2008 4:11PM
Sora nails it.
-Vexx- @ Jul 21st 2008 2:28PM
This title just lacks logic to me.
TwEE @ Jul 21st 2008 2:52PM
What? A sword? Sonic cant have a sword! Thats like giving Mario a cape! The people who are old enough to remember sonic yet too old to buy the new games will flip!
Sora @ Jul 21st 2008 3:11PM
Except giving a hero, even if he IS a plumber, a cape makes more sense than giving a walking, talking hedgehog a sword....
Zertoss @ Jul 21st 2008 3:20PM
How about giving that plumber raccoon ears and a tail so he can fly? Or bunny ears to float? How much sense does THAT make?
samfish @ Jul 21st 2008 3:34PM
STOP IT.
You're damned logic is making it harder it HATE this game.
Snowblind @ Jul 21st 2008 4:07PM
Mario has always had power ups, and they change with each game. When thinking on how to resurrect the Sonic series, giving him a sword wouldn't have been my first idea. Then again, Sega are pretty desperate at this point.
Jacksons @ Jul 21st 2008 3:11PM
That's too funny. Cut 'em up good, Sonic.
Sora @ Jul 21st 2008 3:12PM
I wonder if the metal glove that matches the sword has any storyline (If you can call it that) significance...
Tetsuo @ Jul 21st 2008 4:06PM
I think you guys are missing the point. Anyone else notice the nice "Chrono Trigger returns for DS!" line on the mag? Now that's news to get excited for! Can anyone find more info on that?
daddycool @ Jul 21st 2008 4:09PM
CAn I put in for pre-hate? Like s pre-order but I don't get the game?
Mr Khan @ Jul 21st 2008 10:28PM
A sequel to Secret Rings?
Count me in. 2nd Best 3D Sonic so far (after the awesomeness of Sonic Adventure 2)
And no. I don't need to be told via reply how wrong I am and given a list of reasons why i should hate this game and hate my beloved 3D Sonics
