Video of how Netflix works on Xbox 360
The announcement of Netflix for the Xbox 360 was certainly one of the major highlights of Microsoft's press conference. Inside Xbox has a video, featuring Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, walking through how Netflx will work on the New Xbox Experience. The standard definition movies seem to load and begin streaming instantly. This is a feature we imagine many Xbox Live members, who are also Netflix subscribers, will be taking full advantage of later this year.

Co @ Jul 21st 2008 9:56PM
Woo hoo let's all watch movies on our video game machine.
Scotto @ Jul 21st 2008 10:05PM
Many people use their video game console as their main DVD player - the PS2 achieved massive popularity based on it's use as a relatively cheap DVD player.
The ability to stream movies is just an extension of this functionality. I definitely think Microsoft has struck gold with this announcement.
Just as I don't rag on the PS3 for it basically being a cheap Blu-Ray player first, and a game machine second.

I had Netflix before but I canceled it. Think I will renew it since its only $8 for 1 movie at a time plus unlimited streaming to my 360/PC. Bottom line is this is really cool and not expensive so I'll...Jump In. No pun intended. :P
Nick Ritch @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:33AM
Anyone want to by a roku netflix box??
Colin @ Jul 21st 2008 11:25PM
@xFenixKnightx:
You have to have a minimum of the $10 Netflix plan, plus XBL Gold. FYI. Still... thats pretty cheap.
waynski1457 @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:42AM
@Vegeta
Why don't you have 3 hearts! 2 Stupid Dogs FTW!!
Farseer (GDI) @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:03AM
I've been streaming Divx movies to my 360 for a long time now. I'm looking forward to this, so I can have more than 2-channel audio...
d1srupt0r @ Jul 21st 2008 9:37PM
Any info on Netflix coming to all regions?.....not getting my hopes too high.
007craft @ Jul 21st 2008 10:01PM
considering netflix is US only, NO. Besides, do you really want this service? Its all standerd def. now if it were high def it would be something to get excited for.
ExMcCloud @ Jul 21st 2008 10:14PM
Comon 007 u gotta start somewhere....I definitely think HD movies will come down the line
Korova *of the highlands* @ Jul 21st 2008 9:46PM
Its pretty good streaming, but it does buffer once in a while, depending on how good the interpipe is.
I'm gonna have to fatten the pipe for this, cause its a total coitus interruptus to get streaming in the middle of a monty python movie.
Knight Marquise @ Jul 21st 2008 9:47PM
My wife has a netflix account, and she can't wait to use the service over Live.
Arttemis @ Jul 21st 2008 9:51PM
Considering that last statement he made about adding friends to a party...
I'm totally making an official request to jump in on the movie watching action. ;D
Sora @ Jul 21st 2008 10:09PM
They said that you can only share videos with people who own Netflix accounts. It may not have been in the video, but I know I read it on this site.
Arttemis @ Jul 21st 2008 10:14PM
Lame ;(
Matty @ Jul 21st 2008 9:53PM
I just called NetFlix and was told this would only be available within the United States, just like their current streaming service. :(
neko to kuruma @ Jul 21st 2008 9:51PM
Finally I can watch Netflix movies on a bigger screen without having to pay for some stupid external receiver. Yay.
guidedbyvoip @ Jul 21st 2008 10:24PM
cuz that 480p is gonna look FANTASTICAL on my 50" plasma. (please oh please update Instant Queue with HD please oh please)
neko to kuruma @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:20AM
I meant as opposed to a crappy PC monitor.
vdeogmer @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:29AM
You ARE aware that you can get discs sent to you by netflix?
Deprincer @ Jul 21st 2008 9:52PM
i wanna watch batman
vidGuy @ Jul 21st 2008 9:59PM
Streaming's okay but I'm going to be stuck with a crappy college DSL line, so I'd much rather dl. If they offer timed downloads like the current MS service, I'd rather get this than pay MS's rental fees.
matt247 @ Jul 21st 2008 10:15PM
If you pause the movie at the beginning and wait a couple of minutes to play it, it should play smoothly
DeadlyFrenchman @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:51AM
OOO im watchin a random penguin film, et me watch it with a friend................WHY IS THIS NEW.
I like the old dashboard.wat was wrong with it?
Arttemis @ Jul 21st 2008 10:11PM
Putting aside the fact that there will be over 10,000 films with more being added constantly, it's new because you couldn't do it before.
I don't see the attachment to the current dashboard. It's cluttered, the marketplace is poorly organized, and I highly doubt anything in the new UI will be harder to use than the current one.
They're also giving everyone the OPTION to install games for quieter DVD drive performance and faster loading.
Lastly, the avatars don't have to be used and anyone's gamerpics and themes can be used with the new, cleaner UI.
Seems pretty awesome to me...
I was worried until I found out I didn't have to stare at Miis, but really - these are some amazing additions.
MaulerX @ Jul 21st 2008 10:37PM
I love those "Inside Xbox" segments.
I saw that video two days ago along with a
segment with "trixie" that shows in more detail how customizable those avatars really are. Hey Joystiq, how about posting that video as well for all to see?
Guzzie @ Jul 21st 2008 10:11PM
Better yet, this has footage of the new ingame guide @ 0:53. Certainly helps clarify what they meant by keeping the blades, but I'm not sure if I like it as much as the current guide.
Arttemis @ Jul 21st 2008 10:13PM
Agreed, I'm slightly skeptical about its aesthetics...
but as long as it works and does at least everything the current guide does (which it should), I'm fine with it.
guidedbyvoip @ Jul 21st 2008 10:22PM
As an Apple user I've been waiting for a NetFlix streaming option. Now I have it as a 360 gamer, thank to a partnership with...um, Microsoft. LOL, gee thanks NetFlix!
Kodros @ Jul 21st 2008 10:31PM
Have they ever confirmed if it was just the "Watch Instantly" movies or not?
Kodros @ Jul 21st 2008 10:40PM
Ok, after a second look. Every movie that I could recognize from that video is available through "Watch Instantly" on Netflix. For those that don't know, most of the movies on "Watch Instantly" are old and not very good.
soot @ Jul 21st 2008 10:31PM
Looks awesome! I'm glad I'm a netflix subscriber, I might very well just forego the whole mail thing and watch my movies over Xbox Live from now on.
I really like the new in-game menu, too.
gott @ Jul 21st 2008 10:53PM
People who are mad about a new dashboard are just scared of change. Once the new dashboard is out everyone will love it.
Fact of life is that people fear change.
As for watching netflix videos with your party...only the person who is the group leader has to have Netlix to stream the video and no one else needs Netflix in the party. This is another revolutionary move by Microsoft...Sony is now even further behind.
snarfoogle @ Jul 21st 2008 10:55PM
I've got a Netflix account and a friend with a 360 and HDTV. Let's do this!
ebola! @ Jul 21st 2008 11:01PM
The new dashboard rocks. MS is just getting with the times. Aesthetic tastes change.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Jul 21st 2008 11:16PM
This might be the thing which would make me want to get a 360 at this new low-price. Microsoft struck gold on this one.
Jonah Falcon @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:04AM
Now, if they can't ditch the PC middleman at some point...
Farseer (GDI) @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:08AM
That's a good call... I know I have trouble finding a PC most of the time... ;)
Heh {XBL: P4nic 4tt4ck} @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:07AM
None of these movies interest me/I've seen them before.
Interest..falling..and falling..and, yep, it's gone.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:12AM
Yep because those will totally be the only movies on the service.
Heh {XBL: P4nic 4tt4ck} @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:19AM
If you haven't noticed, the quality of the movies that have been released weekly to this service for the last few months haven't been to great.
Think before you post, my dear. :D
Arnon @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:56AM
Considering how easy it was for TV to go completely HD, I have no doubt in my mind that the Video library will extend drastically and will sooner or later start airing in HD.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:10AM
There's a good chance that this service will boost Netflix streaming traffic. When their traffic increases, they will be more inspired to add additional choices to the "watch instantly" service. True, right away there may only be 10,000+ choices, but I have a good feeling that this partnership will cause them to put a lot more effort into their streaming services...
snakeoil @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:17AM
Umm please wake up this is NO BIG DEAL.
I have netflix and this service has been available to your PC for a while now. The movie list sucks. There old movies and the are SD. There are NO HD yet and PC users have been complaining for a long time now.
The bandwidth for HD movies is going to kill them if and when they start streaming HD movies.
So you get old, SD movies....Yawn. Sure its great if you have Netflix now, a 360 with a Gold account, but its NOT going to make someone go get a 360 or go get Netflix, provided they know what they are getting into.
Heh {XBL: P4nic 4tt4ck} @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:22AM
tl;dr- this is more of a bulletin point for the 360 than a useful feature.
kcchiefsguru @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:34AM
I tried the Netflix viewing from PC and was unimpressed with the video quality. Granted I only have 1.5mb down but that should have gotten me the middle grade level quality not the LOW level quality. No way will I renew my Live for that.
Kodros @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:58AM
Yeah, I don't think people understand what movies they are getting from this service.
VSpeck @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:14AM
Too bad all the major ISP will be using metered bandwidth soon and all this streaming media stuff will really take a hit.
