BioShock PS3 receiving trophies, some details given
Adding to the news from last week that BioShock on PS3 will be getting "exclusive" content, the PlayStation Blog reveals that the game will also receive Trophies. Alyssa Finley, executive producer at 2K Marin, explains how the Trophies are being designed and reveals a few of them in the process.
- Bronze: These trophies will be handed out for exploring the general facets of the game, like "researching, modifying weapons, hacking, and crafting."
- Silver: These trophies will require more thorough exploration of Rapture. The "Historian" Trophy will require finding every audio diary in the game. Finley says the other trophies are going to be kept secret, but we're guessing if you look at the Xbox achievements, the tougher exploration ones should be found here.
- Gold: The Trophy "Brass Balls" can be found here, requiring a player make it through the game on hard with the Vita-Chambers turned off.
- Platinum: ???

This is getting annoying. When will you get it guys? You get the Platinum trophy automatically when you obtain all the other trophies. There's no need for a '???' here. Also, you can't usually get trophies in PSN download games (to avoid excess amounts of platinum trophies with little to no effort - PSN games are allowed less trophies, so it would be much easier to get one).
Ash @ Jul 22nd 2008 9:20AM
Exactly. It really isn't that hard to grasp!
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:10AM
IMO it's rather stupid that PSN games don't get platinum trophies. If they want to reduce the point value behind platinum trophies for PSN games that would be fine, but to disallow them is rather annoying.
Pralaya @ Jul 22nd 2008 5:20AM
I still fell disgusted by this achievement/tropy thing. I try to avoid them as much as possible, they transform a game in a work. I suppose I'm the only one left with this conception. what a pity.
Jtenma @ Jul 22nd 2008 5:34AM
I know you are just stating your opinion but...I am going to have to disagree with you here.
I believe this prolongs the so called, "gaming experience", and adds new value to an otherwise "beaten" game.
Lets face it, we want MORE from our games..and if people are ok with the regular experience when playing the game (like you), then they can completely ignore it.
But I, on the other hand, am slowly starting to accept these achievements/trophies/rewards and find that they give me another reason to go back through a game again (while STILL earning something).
steve @ Jul 22nd 2008 5:44AM
I get what you mean. The 30 hour achievement in GTA IV made me play through that faster than I really wanted to :/
In general though, I feel achievements/trophies are fun little side quests that can make you deviate from the main game and see more of it.
Pralaya @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:02AM
you are right, but when at the beginning I tried to take some achievement, I felt like a monkey running after a banana: taken around. a beautiful game is a beautiful game, and I replay it several times, because I enjoy the experience, the world it creates, the sensations...

I'm going to side with Jtenma on this one...when the 360 first launched, I thought achievements were a complete waste of time since they didn't yield "real world results", but I see now that they give you incentives to play through again, even if only for bragging rights. While I completely agree that developers should not lean solely on achievements to extend the life of their game (they should try awesome gameplay/story/art direction first), the trophy/achievement system can help breathe replayability into single-player-only titles like Bioshock. I love Bioshock (still haven't finished it...I know, I'm not dedicated enough: Gamers' ADHD), but once I finish it I doubt I'd play through it again, except to complete some "side quests" for bragging rights/to see how it might possibly change the way I play the game.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 22nd 2008 9:39AM
Just do what I usually do. When you buy or rent a new game you've never played don't even look or pay attn to the achievements. Play through it as you normally do. Your going to unlock some (beat this level on this dificulty setting) achievements already without even trying. Once youve finished take a look at the achievements for that title and decide which ones you think would be worth playing another playthrough for.
I personally got the GTAIV achievement for beating it in under 30hours even though I did my fare share of messing around in the city. It took me 27 hours so I dont see why anyone would be so sidetracked that they wouldn't get it. The game is not that difficult.
Here are some games I have loved doing the achievements for and added more life to the games.
Halo3
Assassins Creed
GTAIV
Gears of War
COD4
Guitar Hero 2 and 3 at my cousins
Tetris Evolution
XBLA Double Dragon
COD2
Dark Sector
Bioshock
Orange Box - Portal
Dead or Alive 4
Battlefield:BC - Currently playing through and there are some fun achievements to do in this game with the Frostbite Engine.
If I had played these games on PS3 instead of 360 then the life of these titles would have been WAAAAAAYYYY shorter. Its just the truth, you'll see...

You do exactly what I do. I don't even pay attention to achievements the first time through. I just want to enjoy the game. After I'm finished though I'll browse the achievement list and see if there are any that sound like they might be fun. Then I'll go for those.
Chase @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:14AM
I am unsure if I like the way Sony is handling achievements.
Hmm... *ponders*
Misfit Toy @ Jul 22nd 2008 11:23AM
I know what you mean. I have over 20000 achievement points on the 360, so I do like points. But the model of trophies has me kind of not caring on the PS3 side (and yes I own one). The PS3 trails so far behind the 360 in terms of ease of friend's lists and the "fun" of achievements I find it hard to get into it. Who knows...I may need to wait until the PS4 before I care about it.
Misfit Toy @ Jul 22nd 2008 11:27AM
In other news, Bioshock is a good game. I'm happy for the PS3 people who had no other platform to play it on. Now they'll get to see how good it is. I found the atmosphere the best part of the game. Kudos if they can make it look better.
YoungJey @ Jul 22nd 2008 7:25AM

Please learn to use big-boy words next time you use Daddy's computer, mmmkay?
P.s. Phobic: Nice avatar! When I see that I can't help but think of the parody PSA where he yells at the kids after one of them falls on the ice.

@YoungJey - Put down the controller and pick up the textbook...dear God...

Does looking like a dumbass really save you much typing effort? Probably not.

I still don't get exactly why people are gamerscore whores on the 360, and some achievements are ridiculously hard. Alot of devs haven't found a good balance of how to integrate them in games still I think.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:29AM
True. I have a friend that has roughly 40,000G on his account, and I wonder how he ever has time to leave the house/talk to real people. However, I do think that the ridiculously difficult achievements are "just that difficult" to give hardcore players a real sense of accomplishment over gamers like myself who just can't see the point in working towards 10,000 kills in multiplayer with a specific weapon, etc.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 22nd 2008 9:44AM
"10,000 kills"
Umm, you rang? o_O
lol, man I wish Bungie would use the extra 250gp they are allowed so I can get back on there. I absolutely loved the ch33voz in that game!
Mr.ESC @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:44AM
So far I got 12,000 but not a lot of games. The xbox 360 says I could have 32,000 with all the games I've played but that would be counting all the xbox live game demos I've downloaded and some games I rented a while ago.
If you take those out I think it would be 12,000 out of 18,000.
Anyway not all games are like that for example Dead Rising achievements ask you to play the game in different ways and The orange box achievement are actually fun to get.
If you ask me the hardest achievements are the ones online since they are more about grinding. Getting 100,000 kills in PDz how is that fun for anyone? You must really love the game.
For me the only impossible achievements are 5/7 day survivor for the fact I can’t play 14 hours and I really don’t want to leave my xbox 360 on and most online achievements due my lousy connection but I’m changing it in order to play Gears 2 and Left 4 Death.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:53AM
Hehe...I forgot about "Seriously", Fenix.
But seriously, folks...
I myself just broke the 10,000G score, and I've had the 360 since launch day. There's no hatin' here if anyone can achieve those heights of gaming greatness.
Oh, and Mr. ESC...let me know your gamertag so I can add you in time for Left 4 Dead. That game is going to kick so much ass, but I doubt a lot of my friends will get it. :-(
GrossGreg @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:16AM
Wha...? Nice try, Nina. Time to wield the banhammer!
Mr.ESC @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:46AM
I got Brass Balls in 5 minutes after it's release.
If anyone wants tips for Bioshock just ask.
Zoesch @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:04PM
Hmmmm, you should've seen a doctor about them brass balls mate.
Travis @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:01PM
i think achievements are incredible.. they are a great way for others to see how much you game! and how intense you are...
and not to mention...they are just damned fun
Travis @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:03PM
P.S i get a kick out of games that are so easy to get achievements on...
like that Ninja Turtles crap game...
good way to look like a achievement whore.
