Thing is, using the GPU for more generalized non-graphics computation is icing on the cake--current CPU's and GPU's are already powerful enough for stunning games. The GPU can be even more efficient for some computations, but it's optional and not required that developers use it that way.

On the other hand, as I understand it, you must use the Cells in the PS3 to do anything remotely considered sophisticated, and unfortunately the architecture and tools are difficult to use.

"I have an 8600 in my first computer and a 6800 in my second one. Both play games fine. I doubt when DX11 comes out I'll have anything to worry about."

Thank god for all of the fools who rush out and pay outrageous prices for unproven tech that won't be properly implemented for years, it makes things alot cheaper for those of us who are a bit more sensible. When Crysis came out a couple of quick and easy hacks allowed me to play it on Win2k of all things, and implement all of the "DX10 exclusive" crap that was artificially bound to Vista and DX10 hardware, and according to the author of the DX10 effects hack he got a better framerate in XP, totally negating the idea that only Vista and DX10 could do these effects efficiently. Oh sure there were slight differences with the true DX10, if you like playing your games looking at the monitor with a magnifying glass. I just don't get all of the people who rushed out and bought Vista and 500 dollar gfx cards and Crysis was still 9 months away, and then all you get for that 700 bucks you spent is a better framerate, not anything truly amazing that I couldn't get with my 500 dollar machine. (self built mind you, don't expect to get a 500 dollar Dell and have it be much more than a web browser.) And thats the other thing, when most ppl buy a machine its got a quad core monster CPU and a hamster running in a wheel for a gfx chip, why Dell and Compaq and those guys balance their PCs that way I'll never know, I've had my dad and ex wife spend way more on thier machines that can't do half the stuff mine can even though thier CPUs are far superior to mine, so putting more strain on the GPU isn't going to help most folks out. This leap to DX11 sounds boring really, maybe they learned that going overboard and making it sound like this big mind blowing thing just was a big set up for failure, I'm still waiting for the big DX10 killer app that puts my DX9 based rig to shame.

I'm about to build myself a new computer, should I wait for the Direct X 11 cards or just get a DirectX 10.1 4850 Radeon.

Get the 4850 anyway, DX11 includes and has backwards compatibility of a lot of DX10.1's features on the Radeon.

You shouldn't be missing out much.

"since, y'know, most every computer nowadays has multiple cores"

I thought you was being sarcastic. You got to be joking? Why would you think that?
