First real, tiny screen of Sony's 'Massive Action Game'

Here, in all its compressed glory, is the first actual screenshot of Sony and Zipper Interactive's 256-player MAG: Massive Action Game. We say "actual" because it was clear to anyone with eyes that Sony had pulled another Killzone 2 with the MAG video debuted during its pre-E3 press conference. In other words, it was all pre-rendered.

MAG senior producer Rade Stojsavljevic posted the shot to the official PlayStation blog, calling it "a sneak peak from one of [Zipper's] internal play sessions." Stojsavljevic also said that the dev has used its experience working in online games with the SOCOM franchise to create an entirely new server architecture for MAG capable of supporting its, well, massive amount of players.

When the full-body-shake drumming came in, I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

there might be 256 PS3 owners in total but I only know 3 of them so that's going to make the squad a bit uneven. That would mean you would need other random players to fill your ranks and just like Live, PSN online is a douchefest. That means unless you know 7 other players for a reliable squad, you're going to have to dip your headset into the primordial ooze and hope you pull something out with an IQ above an amoeba.

Yeah that sounds fun.

Well, you'll be put in an 8 man squad. I'm guessing they'll be some sort of option to have all your friends put in a single squad.

Can't wait for the 8-man team killing squads.

That video was epic. As for the screenshot, doesn't look that impressive.

If Metal Slug has taught us anything, Flame Throwers are the most effective weapon against paratroopers.

This game sounds wicked, can't wait to see more.

Yes. Nice to know that this screenshot - the only piece of real gameplay - shows you that the game is farther along than you thought it would be.

Can't forget that planetside had parachute drops as well.

Apparently they're already running beta tests? I guess Zipper have been working on this game secretly for quite a while.

In all fairness, the trailer was meant to demonstrate how the 256 player system was suppose to work, I mean to capture a giant battle in real time and what would happened through it would be a pain in the ass to set up and execute. What's the difference anyway? Not like they were showing off the graphics in the game, which weren't even that great in the CG trailer.

I'm sure we'll get more gameplay as time goes by, if this is Zippers big game then it's been in development since 2005.

Right Joystiq, Sony should not use pre-rendered trailers for sneek-peeks at just announced games because NOONE ELSE DOES IT...EVER.

Many games still show pre-rendered trailers especially ones that are JUST ANNOUNCED and TEASERS.

I think its fair to say that the PS3 is the FPS console. Other than Little Big Planet they are slowly unseating the 360 as the FPS console. The 360 is now the RPG console and the PS3 is trying to attract the frat, shoot first, dickhole demographic.

ps3 is definitely more FPS oriented than even I expected this generation.

The 360 is clearly diversifying itself and the games library. Really with Lips, Viva, and all the other family oriented games that MS is trying to push can you honestly say that the 360 is the "shooterbox"?

That being said though why is there all this hate towards FPS? The market is clearly there. Obviously people love shooting shit up including people, demolishing buildings, and vehicles.

Hence most FPS games sell decently well or if they're HALO status extremely well.

But I do think the 360 while have a lot of FPS has managed to make itself a more diverse system and therefore I consider it simple a GAMES Console.

PS3 has already diversified, it doesn't need to diversify any more then it is, what it needs is those diversified games to be great, but seeing as FPS is the showcase of this gen, other genres rarely get seen, look at all the highest rated games on PS3 and 360, they are mostly FPS titles.

The game looks to be farther along that I expected. I was dreading that with the trailer the game was still in the idea stage. Luckily sony seems to be getting the idea that one shouldnt show games that are too far off into the future.

I am not suprised, Zipper is a quality dev and they have not been heard from until now. They have been working on this game for years already.

Zipper has never dissapointed and I see no reason as to why they would dissapoint now.

All I see is that PS3 games are getting better and better and we are barely 1 year into its lifecycle.

KZ2, MGS4, MS2, LBP, INfamous..all look so clean and polished.

I am really excited for this new SOCOM...yes that's right people...this is the NEW SOCOM that Zipper has been working on...the MAG title is just placeholder.
