Confirmed! Gamestop hosting GoW2 event this Friday [update]

Update: Thanks to Matt Banks over at Loot Ninja who supplied a scan of an actual promotional flyer, we have confirmed that the Gamestop GoW2 event will in fact be going down this Friday, July 25th. See you at Gamestop!

Both Gamernode (with their insider's email) and The Wire are reporting that this Friday, July 25th after closing, Gamestop stores nationwide will be hosting Gears of War 2 "After Dark" events. At the events - which are said to be similar to the original GoW After Dark events held back in October 2006 - they will be airing an exclusive video clip where Cliff Bleszinski introduces some never before seen Gears of War 2 footage. We're also hearing that following the exclusive video, each store will be holding a quick 1v1 Gears of War tournament where winners will be awarded Microsoft points for their fragging efforts.

Sadly, we have yet to find mention of the rumored Friday After Dark events on Gamestop.com so, for the time being, we'll plop a fat rumor tag on this news and patiently await word from Gamestop regarding the rumor. Our fingers are double crossed in hopes that we have a Gears 2 event to attend later this week.

No sneaky playing of a Gears2 demo? Pffft!

The event in 2006 was ok. I got a poster, gamerpic, and theme. I kind of doubt that they will have a tournament, tho.

I got the theme and pic, and a Gears lanyard. Maybe MS could give out avatar T-shirts instead of pics and themes... Hopefully one of the many Gamestops in my area will do it.

I was in Gamestop this past weekend using the 20% off coupon and they told me about this.

At 9:30 there will be a 1v1 Gears 1 tourney, and some "new Gears 2 videos". Not sure which comes first.

Tourney should be tough here (college town), but I'm looking forward to it.

Yup, just called my Gamestop (which is literally 5min away) and they're having it! w00000t!!! I dont even care if I'm not in the tourney it would still be cool to get some free swag, see the vid, see the tourney and chill with some Gearsheads.

This is true - my local Gamestop is handing out coupons for 30% extra trade-in credit in addition to the event. And there were sign-up sheets for the tournament. Too bad the rules are lame - 1v1 and no power weapons on the map.

I hope this crap doesn't divolve to douchebags turtling up with their lancers since all the other ranged weapons were removed.

I work at a Gamestop that is having this. It isn't going to be at every single Gamestop only selected ones. There will be a tournament where only people 17 and older can enter regardless if you have a parent that says you can enter or not. GoW 2 video with intro from Cliffy. Free SWAG. Thats what I read in the e-mail recently. That's probably all of it.

List of Gamestops, or is it hush hush? I'm not interested in the tournament, just some of the schwag.

I don't know if they have a list I would just check your local one.

This is my first post here, although I've been reading this blog for some time. (it's great, keep it up!) After reading this I called my local Gamestop. No tourney within 2 hours of my place. i NEED Gears 2! Guess I'm going on a short road trip Friday night =) Just wanted to say thanks for the heads up.

It's not a rumor cause I work there knowing to be pissed that I have to leave at midnight Friday for that damn tourney

Meh, if I have nothing else to do Friday night, I might get some friends to go with me. Should be fun, I suppose. Maybe I can win some swag. Get to see some new Gears2 footage.

Probably because of that, I'll be there...despite not having played Gears for almost a year.

I called my local gs and confirmed this and also signed up for the event. The only thing they wernt sure on was how many points the winner will get.
If I win I'll let you all know.

How can you call this a GoW2 event? It is a GoW tournament with a video of GoW2.

My first impression was that we would be playing an exlcusive beta, or something, of GoW2.

My Gamestop just informed me that you have to have ID proving your 17 and preorder Gears 2 (not a problem for me cause I did months ago).

There will be never released footage of Gears 2.
