All the answers were typical of what we have seen with Nintendo this generation. They spin their titles and peripherals to make them sound like items gamers want, when in reality they are still just cashing in on the casual market. Hell, he couldn't even give an update on games that didn't involve the typical Mario character lineup. Oh wait, I forgot the snowboarding game didn't I - you know, the one we need to get the $90 Wii fit in order to play.

Someone posting above was happy to see the mic wasn't included with Animal Farm. What?! I'm the opposite. When I read this I see that I have to buy an add-on to my wiimote to fully experience the new games and now I also need to buy the mic that they are pushing for AF. I feel they are really milking the market hard right now, and we are on the losing end.

I think Nintendo has done some things right - but I sure don't believe they care about the core gamers who invest in gaming continuously. It appears as though they are betting everything on impulse buys. That's a fine way to operate your company, but don't expect us all to just nod our heads when you say we matter to you.

Funny, I did say farm didn't I. It was a typo.

Weird that that book would pop up. Nintendo = totalitarianism? Maybe!

I love how he completely dodged the storage space issue.

So game journalists and gamers are finally falling out of love with the Wii. Hate to say it...but people have been saying this since the Wii was released. They sure told us so. They sure did.

You know I don't buy any of the trash that hits the Wii. No Wiifit. I buy No More Heroes and NiGHTS and Mario Galaxy. And still...others keep buying the trash. Its sold out for goodness sakes. No matter how hard us core gamers try the idiots will keep buying the crap. I don't know if voting with our wallets can even win out in the end.

"The core, when they first heard about the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii remote and Wii Sports, were skeptical. But when they tried it, they liked it."

Okay, but how long did that enjoyment last? :\

And as far as the extra storage goes, I'm pretty sure Nintendo has it right on. If you can't cough up money for a 4 or 8GB SD card (which are incredibly cheap, I should add), there's something wrong with you. I don't need an HDD to hold my stuff; WiiWare/VC games are microscopic compared to what you'd get off of the XBL Marketplace.

I think people want a device that they can not only store data on, but also be able to use the media directly off of it. If Nintendo were to allow people to store and play VC/WiiWare content on SD cards I'm sure that would satisfy many people. Of course, they really should have had more storage to being with, then maybe we could get some demos of retail games.

Also, can the Wii even use 4 and 8 GB SD cards? Cards of those capacities are SDHC cards.

The problem is, toast, that one can't access their games/saves/etc from the SD card. All most people WANT is Nintendo to change the firmware to allow this.
I have a hard time believing that Excitetruck can stream music from the SD slot, yet the Wii would explode if you tried to play an NES game from the SD Card.

They only have certain time eh? Why not do a montage video, you don't need to demo every title!

Why do Nintendo keep telling us to manage our storage space/swap stuff off SD/redownload. I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS IT TAKES TOO LONG AND IS PAINFUL!!!! Please sort a storage solution!

The anti nintendo/casual gamer ride goes on. Ok so now what you have taken your solemn blood oath not to buy the WII or Nintendo WII products? Now what... since from this interview and Nintendo's actions, they aren't catering to the "hardcore" anyway, now what?

You can't really force them since you're not spending any money with them, but many will complain that nintendo still doesn't cater to them. So let me get this straight, don't buy the product but demand them to make products for you anyway, I have no idea how that would work? Seriously at this point the "nintendo abandoned the hardcore" mantra is the same as "I don't buy an xbox360 cause of red ring" or "PS3 is teh to expensive for me to consider buying".

You might have me with the PS3 but alright how many more stories are we going to see about Nintendo and no hardcore games? This is preaching to the converted, it won't even dent nintendo. Or is this the hardcore huddle session that gaming isn't "ours" any more. Because I did this already, when PS1 came out, I had this exact argument being the sega fanboy that I was. Ahem... let me see if I can remember it.

FanboyhardcoreSavior: BULLSHIT YO! DIS is crap! Playstation Ripped Nintendo I mean look at the buttons, And Battle Arena Toshinden THis game is to easy!. This is garbage this isnt't a system, this is some Mainstream BS! ADD a CD player and all this crap, A game system is supposed to play games. There is no SKILL TO this.

FanboyhardcoreSavior: WHAT! EA WHere is my Games, You betray Us For SONY! Bastards! WHAT WHAT WHAT! SQARE on Sony....well nintendo had that coming.

FanboyHardcore you get the picture: See Sega making Hardcore games on this dreamcast, But all the kids want a Black system to feel all GROWNS UP! BOO PS2 the real gaming is with sega, hardcore forever, 2d fighters, Bangai-oh, res, jet set radio you not finding that with PS2. Why nobody supporting my hardcore system with the great games! What go out of Business that will NEVER HAPPEN!

Dreamcast died, and so did the Fanboy Samurai Ninja Zsavior.

This trend isn't new every few console generations a video game console opens up the market even more. And you know what it is for the better. My hate for Sony and Playstation, died, (I still don't like the systems) but they were a much needed turning point in the industry. Same with xbox, same with Wii. As irrelevant as I was then, these myriad of constant nintendo revolting hardcore complaints are now, the change already happened, harping about it every day in a new thread will do nothing. I know this might get voted down, but still this is my opinion there is plenty of gaming out there still to be had, why complain about the same topic every day.

Wow, I never realized that we weren't allowed to air our opinions in a place of gathering such as Joystiq! God forbid that a lot of people feel betrayed and want to commiserate with other disillusioned gamers.

And your point about not buying their stuff is totally moot. By saying that somebody won't buy Nintendo until there are games that are worth playing, "hardcore" gamers are letting Nintendo know that they will not be coming back without an about face.

The scary part here is, like Furbies or Beanie Babies and all other money-printing fads, once Nintendo falls out of mass favor (when people start saying "Oh, I bought a Nintendo thingie about a year ago but now it just sits there, I don't need another paperweight"), and they've burned their bridges with the "hardcore" as well, who are they going to sell to?

I'm sorry I bought my Wii, because it was a total waste of money since I never play it, and I definitely won't be buying the next Nintendo console unless they prove it worthwhile (with a couple of games, not just 1 or 2). And I'm sure many people feel the same way. What then? No 'hardcore,' no casual, and Nintendo goes the way of the singing fish. The part about this that makes me the most angry (if this doomsday scenario does play out) is that the media will then further marginalize video gaming as a flash in the pan, all because Nintendo capitalized on public stupidity for a couple of years.

i think i've just written Nintendo off. everyone of those questions were concrete issues that core gamers want answers to, and all we got is PR spin. the question of more space for VC and WiiWare titles is a perfect example. he basically said that we should just move the titles that we paid for off and onto SD cards -that we also pay for- when we want to play them. OR, Nintendo, instead of supporting your service which you refuse to improve upon by the request of the gamers who made you the company you are, i could just emulate them for free and not have to worry about storage space.

i don't know about Timmy's grandparents or Johnny's little sister, but my Wii has been collecting dust ever since i got tired of Super Mario Galaxy if you're not going to give me, a 'core' gamer, a reason to play it, i'm going to buy 360/PS3 games.

not like they need my money anyway.

I want more Zelda, Metroid and Resident Evil. Mario Super Sluggers isn't what I would count as a core game. Neiter is Anime Crossing. Neither of those games have the power to really sell consoles. Why is the first game to support voice chat a game where you do virtual hole digging and shop for clothes you made?

Seriously... they think Animal Crossing is a "core" gamer's game? I laugh directly at them. And can't seem to stop.

No storage is also a large disappointment.

One thing seems clear to me: being on top in the video game race turns you into a complete jerk. If you're old enough to remember it, Nintendo acted like jerks before when they were top dog before the original PlayStation took the lead, and alienated a lot of 3rd party developers with their stingy "It's my ball, we'll play by my rules" attitude.

Then Sony got on top, and alienated a lot of gamers with their self-important strutting and bloviating. Nintendo became the underdog everybody loved to cheer for. I really think Sony's karma is a large factor in how much difficulty they've had getting momentum for the PS3.

Now Nintendo is back on top -- the plucky little underdog no more. And guess what? They're back to being flaming douchebags.

Power corrupts.

*sigh* I love reading interviews but one thing I can't stand is all you guys go so easy on these guys. Hit them with some tougher questions and then follow it up with another tough question or remark. We're all gamers here wether we blog or actually interview these guys. Why not tell them...

"Look Animal Crossing is not what we mean by hard core, we want something with a little more depth, to story, gameplay and character development."

I've been a hardcore Nintendo fan since the days of the NES always purchased Nintendo systems on day one and then bought everything else, so far I don't own a Wii but I do own some of the games, the more "hardcore" games not the other shit they keep feeding us. The media and everyone else needs to kick these guys in the ass metaphorically speaking with questions and comments when we have a chance to drill them in interviews. Stop being so soft and really ask and make comments on what they are doing.

As a gamer this situation upsets me to no end, I love my 360 but I would love to also love the Wii so much to actually want to buy it but unfortunately I don't and will not purchase that shit. Specially after that pathetic excuse for an E3 presentation. I remember the days when Nintendo's press event had people cheering in the crowd and after that seeing pictures of the biggest lines of people trying to get a chance at playing their games at Nintendo's booth. Now I hear them pause as if what they just said was applause worthy or something, that shit was so pathetic. I was hoping the media would just stand up and walk on that horrid presentation maybe that would have sent a message to them that gamers and the gamer media just aren't interested in their bullshit casual crap. Casual games have a place in this industry but just a simple ad during "Oprah" or an article in "People", "Time" or any other mass publication will get you sales of casual games.

What, no questions about mother/earthbound on the VC? For shame.

Also, anyone have any ideas if Nintendo ever intends to open up the system to indie development - somewhat like MS has done with XNA? Homebrew is one thing but being able to tinker with the system legally would be fantastic.

It's not like you'd expect them to reveal anything in a casual interview, right? For better or for worse, Nintendo reveals its shit when it's damn well good and ready, and if you go to them, all you're going to get is more bullshit

It's when they choose to release stuff that you actually get the concrete answers we're looking for
