I have both versions. It's an unequivocal fact that the DS version TOTALLY ANNIHILATES the PSP version if you have the paddle controller. With the d-pad (on either version) I end up missing the UFO's that lead to special rounds half the time because the cannon moves too slowly. With the paddle controller, I can whip around that screen like lightning and never miss any UFO, EVER. Plus, when I've got the Fever, it's easier to mow down several waves before time runs out thanks to the vastly improved speed.

Whoa, the PSP version has no online leaderboards? Thats one of the reasons I got it for DS since its so addictive (even though im around 110th last time I checked).

Yeah, it really just comes down to the awesomeness of the paddle for me. The paddle makes it.

Personally, the paddle is the deciding factor. I have the paddle and this game, and it is simply awesome.

No Paddle, but the online multiplayer (while kinda a PITA to set up, given the poor menu arrangement) is very much fun and worth it.

I do wish I could find the proper 'gap size' setting for my DS, though. It just doesn't look properly spaced as it is.

The paddle issue has been what has kept me from purchasing this game, which I have otherwise been looking forward to. I'm not particularly disappointed about not being able to play with the paddle (I'm fine with either stylus or D-pad), but I've heard mumblings about later levels being unbeatable without the paddle, which threatens to take away some of the length and enjoyability of the experience. I likely sound ignorant for saying so, but I've imported exactly once in my life and it just seems like a murky affair where anything can go wrong (not to mention the extra costs associated), so I'm resigned to either play it using a conventional control scheme or not at all.

Even though I don't have a PSP, this sort of helpful article spotlighting both versions is something I feel we need more of (not just on these joystiq network sites, but the interwebs in general.) Nice work.

Playing both of them (without the paddle), for some reason I found the DS version more fun, despite how flashy and pretty the PSP version is.
Maybe the PSP one's distracting, and the DS one isn't.

I like this. A completely unbiased comparison of the two. Seems like for the extreme Space Invader junkie, you'd want to get both versions even (Why not? They're both pretty cheap!).

Thank you!

And yes, owning both versions is a win situation for Space Invaders junkies, haha :)
