Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime acknowledged, "from an Americas-centric perspective," that the Wii's storage capacity is becoming a "mainstream" problem as the regional consumer base embraces WiiWare and the Virtual Console. He tells MTV there is an "urgency" to finding a storage solution, and even states that Nintendo is working on a solution, albeit one that isn't ready to be announced yet.
Meanwhile, we can't help but notice that USB external hard drives with plenty of space are pretty cheap, but would that solution be too simple? We wouldn't to want make things easy ... that's just too complicated.

Yeah, sorry, Wii only supports regular SD cards, not SDHC.
There are SOME 4GB SD cards... but they don't exactly pertain to the SD standard specifications... So they don't always work in SD devices.
(Can anyone test if a 4GB SD non-HC card works in the Wii?)
Otherwise, you're stuck with 2GB cards. Which, isn't that bad of a deal. They're cheap as hell (like, $6-7 for one), and still A LOT more storage than what the Wii already offers.

If only their was a slot of the front of the Wii that allowed for inexpensive flash memory to be inserted...

Usually these guys don't admit anything is a "problem" until they have (internally) already figured it out and are almost ready to address it. Then again, this is Reggie :p

Needing storage is something that only Americans care about? WTF?!

It's a storage device that plugs into a Game Boy Advance, which is connected to a GameCube controller port that connects to the Wii through a proprietary USB interface.

I personally think the SD card is the smart way to go. But I agree that the encryption time is just plain horrible for copying games to it(I do this to save space sometime the games reinstall much quicker). Maybe they should let you pre encrypt the SD card for wii only use for a portion or the whole sd card.
I personally wished their DRM was logon based more than system based now cause I for see a time when new hardware comes out and the content is not transferable. I really really hope all the players make the content transferable. Thats the nice thing of steam I know that for the most part unless steam fails I will still have my games in the foreseeable future.
Now an encrypted external hard drive that let me take my games with me would be nice but I don't see that happening. Even though I suspect an external hard drive is the solution Nintendo will take.

I don't care what the price is, I will fucking pay it. I need more space. I hate moving shit around. It has seriously deterred me from purchasing any new games. Fix it, Nintendo, and my money is yours.

Support for my 500GB Apple Time Capsule would be nice. It's just sitting there begging to store channels and WiiWare games.

Actually, aside from game save states, I'm not sure why we even need our games to be stored locally on the Wii. Nintendo could get around a lot of these issues by improving their network's bandwidth and simply using each game's channel as a trigger to download and run the game as needed. (At least as far as virtual console goes.) They could also change the business model over to make every game in their library available to everyone immediately for a single monthly charge (somewhere between 1,000 to 2,000 wii points), rather than making us wait week after week for the off chance we'll get a decent title.
WiiWare itself could remain a download-only experience due to the size of some titles, but if they lighten up on the SD port encryption it wouldn't have to be the awful experience it is now.
