Cryptic Studios job listing reveals Star Trek Online

In January 2008, work on the Star Trek MMO switched from Perpetual Entertainment to an undisclosed California-based developer. It looks like they're sticking with the Star Trek Online name; we were so hoping to see City of Trekkies instead.

Let's predict how many people are going to be Jean-Luc Picard.
juju187 @ Jul 26th 2008 11:11PM
i was gonna make a chick called 6 of 9
Wes @ Jul 27th 2008 12:25AM
You should really confuse them, make it 7 of 9 holes filled either hypenated or without spaces if the character limit accepts.
If they ask how thats possible say, borg implants or alien phsyiology. Follow it up by saying 'prim-a-tive hu-mann', never mind its a Ferengi saying.
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Jul 27th 2008 7:19AM
Hehe, the top 3:
1.Spock
2.Picard
3.Kirk
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2008 1:58PM
Huh, you'd figure there'd be quite a bit of Data, also
Ignatius @ Jul 26th 2008 10:12PM
Well... here's hoping something gets done.
pr_master @ Jul 26th 2008 10:12PM
Looking at Cryptic wikipedia page this look like old news. :\
4MyFriends @ Jul 26th 2008 10:30PM
I wonder how a Star Trek MMO will work, are we going to be like Kirk and Picard, or are we going to be faceless redshirts?
Thatoneguy64 @ Jul 26th 2008 10:33PM
I thought Star Trek Online was already announced?
Thatoneguy64 @ Jul 26th 2008 10:33PM

Yep, just as I thought.

Wooh. Joystiq even reported on this in 06
Krystalle Voecks @ Jul 26th 2008 10:50PM
If you look at that Wiki article, you'll notice: "undisclosed studio" - Cryptic being that heretofore undisclosed studio is the big deal. Perpetual (the original developer) is gone.
Corbo @ Jul 27th 2008 8:40AM
"Wooh. Joystiq even reported on this in 06."
Yes, yes they did. And then, in 08, they reported that it had switched to an unnamed developer. Then, later in 08, by which I mean today, they reported that the unnamed developer was apparently Cryptic Studios.
I'll admit that you could maybe get the wrong idea from the headline but, seriously, there's only two paragraphs up there. Is it really that much trouble to read the article before commenting on it?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 26th 2008 10:37PM
Thought this was old news. When Perpetual laid off their people, Cryptic took over the problem and interviewed most of Perpetual's programmers and hired some of them. Since the Perpetual people had just lost their jobs, they didn't seem to show much allegiance to the idea that the buyer was supposed to be kept secret.
Snowblind @ Jul 27th 2008 6:47AM
It was never officially confirmed, but yeah, we pretty much new from immediatly that Cryptic were the ones who took over.
Corbo @ Jul 27th 2008 8:46AM
Plus there's apparently been a countdown timer (complete with some Star Trek Online promotional art) going on the Cryptic Studios website for a while now.
lwelyk @ Jul 26th 2008 11:44PM
You guys are jerks, I glanced at the picture and got excited about a Shadow of the Colossus sequel. ;_;
Shh @ Jul 27th 2008 12:20AM
Expect a significant announcement at Comic Con this Monday.
FSK405K @ Jul 27th 2008 2:36AM
As someone who points out all the many items in Wall-E that remotely relate to anything Star Trek-y, there seems this game will be a non-starter. Star Trek games are either about a) story and ethics/values/decisions, or b) combat. If the game focuses on story, etc., those are things so far incompatible with any successful MMO. If they focus on combat, it isn't really Star Trek, it's Wing Commander. The only way to make these remotely feasible is to have a quest or two taken from each of the episodes, have them all laid out in the universe Mass Effect-style, and let players work through them as PvE. Each ship would need to be crewed by a few different personnel, unless you want to do solo missions in a shuttlecraft. ...and how are they going to have the many time-travel problems or other "reset button" episodes?
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2008 2:00PM
That's the problem with making star trek into a bankable game series. The show itself would function more like a community based game like Second Life, the Sims, or Animal Crossing, but they keep trying to focus on combat, which is, quite frankly, very boring in Star Trek
MarMar @ Jul 27th 2008 6:24AM
Why do companies you never ever hear of develop MMOs? I mean seriously, what's this company's resume??
Snowblind @ Jul 27th 2008 6:46AM
City of Heroes?
Krystalle Voecks @ Jul 27th 2008 8:24AM
"Why do companies you never ever hear of develop MMOs?"
You mean like Blizzard?
MarMar @ Jul 27th 2008 11:07AM
No, I don't mean like Blizzard. I mean like the company making this game, the company that made star wars for lucas arts, the company that (was?) making the stargate game, etc. why dont u treat others the way u want to be treated, jerk.
Ignatius @ Jul 27th 2008 5:58PM
Cryptic Studios made City of Heroes/City of Villians. They sold the rights off to NCsoft.
Good Star Trek Fan @ Jul 27th 2008 7:27AM
As long as it's focused on the good star trek (TNG/DS9)
and avoids the bad Star Trek (TOS, the first half of Enterprise, Voyager)
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Jul 27th 2008 12:43PM
Don't knock Voyager. It was good once Kess was dead and before 7 of 9.
Lucas Schafer @ Jul 27th 2008 1:30PM
Voyager was a great series. stop your hating. and TOS was good too, it was just corny
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2008 2:02PM
I never enjoyed the original series because of that corniness, and the fact that its been parodied too much, but i liked all of the other ones except Enterprise
But TNG and Voyager stand out as the best, at least to me
gumby @ Jul 27th 2008 10:00PM
DS9 all the way. Anyways screw being picard or kirk I want to be a borg.
