Gears of War 2 content unlocked by original Gears achievements, $130 Lancer bundle coming
A dynamic duo of details dropped yesterday at the Gears of War 2 panel at the San Diego Comic Con 08 regarding Epic's epic new installment in their well-received locust-splitting franchise. The first of these announcements, revealed by Cliff Bleszinski, was that the title will utilize "linked achievements" to unlock in-game content -- basically, if you have certain achievements from the original Gears of War on your profile, it will unlock certain bonuses (like extra playable characters in the online mode) in the sequel.
The second, and arguably less thrilling announcement, came shortly thereafter -- the obligatory "collector's edition" of Gears of War 2 was unofficially announced at the panel. It will supposedly include a "miniature replica model" of a Lancer, the iconic chainsaw-infused gun from the series. Sure, the special edition's legendary price of $130 may seem a tad unreasonable, but who said that transforming your cat into a futuristic super soldier was going to be cheap?

You'll instantly be able to tell which players have no social lives because they'll be wearing whatever the "Seriously..." achievement unlocked for them.
Lord Bowser @ Jul 27th 2008 1:16PM
Lol, where's Fenix?
ToRo @ Jul 27th 2008 1:20PM
Yeah, you got that right. I never had patience for seriously. Mostly because it was glitched and the game didn't have a great way of counting your kills.
arrrgh @ Jul 28th 2008 10:21AM
driven2sin. rethink your life please
chuck @ Aug 27th 2008 6:09AM
players who have seriously LIKE me have social lives but just happen to be very very good at killing people like you in gears of war
driven2sin @ Jul 27th 2008 1:18PM
so they are forcing you buy the first game to play this one?
what about all those EA haters about 'give me what i paid for'? i should be able to play it without spending more money.....
Shmil @ Jul 27th 2008 1:24PM
Yes, they're forcing you the same way that EA is forcing you to buy the cheats and unlocks on their sports games.
they're not forcing you to do anything, they're just rewarding fans who unlocked everything in the original GoW.
SirPasta117 @ Jul 27th 2008 1:33PM
Obviously there were too many big words in the article for you....IT WILL UNLOCK EXTRA CHARACTERS!!!!!! no disable you from playing the game...Durr!!!

mcatrage @ Jul 27th 2008 2:24PM
You didn't do to well in reading comprehension did you?
driven2sin @ Jul 27th 2008 7:48PM
ha, the true bias comes out. The real reason people bashed battlefield was fanboys of gears, halo or COD4.
the stuff EA is charging you for in bad company are EXTRA weapons just like you defense of this shit. But with EA you have FREE ways of getting those items. Is there a FREE way to play the first Gears so someone can unlock parts in this one that are in the game that one is buying??!!
you fail at logic. I read the article fine. but you pass as tobias
Infidel @ Jul 27th 2008 8:26PM
Theres a difference between purely aesthetic character skins and gameplay changing weapons.
Comparing the two is ridiculous.
You fail.
driven2sin @ Jul 27th 2008 8:44PM
not all the unlocks are known - or do all of you fail at reading as well?
you could very well be screwed by not playing the first gears
I am just pointing out how EA gets slammed while gears/halo/COD4 are looked at as 'innovating'
guess gears 2 will have destructible environments and will be crowned for that
emotaku @ Jul 27th 2008 8:53PM
you're literally the only one who's mentioned innovation in this entire page.
seeing as you're only defense now is uncertainty to the extent of the content itself i suggest you simmer down.
rTwelve [xbl:chilblane] @ Jul 27th 2008 9:31PM
SIMMER DOWN Y'ALL, THE GRAYSCALE HAS SPOKEN
Infidel @ Jul 27th 2008 10:10PM
"not all the unlocks are known"
So you contradict your point of slamming Epic, no?
Considering how much effort Epic are putting into the multiplayer i doubt they would have anything as game changing as exclusive weapons. In fact i will bet my 360 on it that it doesnt.
driven2sin @ Jul 28th 2008 12:54AM
you'll see.. cliffy b will screw the hell out of ya on this one.. they know all youz are going to buy it regardless in droves
Lord Bowser @ Jul 27th 2008 1:23PM
I don't think us, as a society, should be promoting drug use. We've seem how it can wreck lives and the damage it has done across many places in the world. Gears, with its juiced up lead characters, clearly promotes an unhealthy image for a young man. It is so unattainable to naturally obtain such a physique that our young menare resorting to cocktails of steroids to obtain the "gears" look. This is immoral and wrong, and it cannot be tolerated. This is no different to stick figure cat walk models and the problems some young girls have with bulimia.
I thought Mr Bleszinski had decided to become a more mature, professional young developer? Well maybe he should look at the terrible example he's setting with the lead character designs.
DEEZNUTZ @ Jul 27th 2008 1:36PM
PLEASE confirm your sarcasm and humor... I just can't believe this was a serious post.
Shmil @ Jul 27th 2008 1:47PM
Deeznutz you might want to check to see if there's an update for your sarcasm detector.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 27th 2008 2:26PM
I dunno, Shmil... you should see some of Lord Bowser's 'serious' posts.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 27th 2008 2:40PM
Wow, I finally realized here today that Lord bowser is officially nothing more than a troll, which is a good thing for his intelligence. Remember the whole RE slave debacle, I'm calling shenanigans on that!
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Jul 27th 2008 5:00PM
The last thing I'd like to do is look like Fenix.
aristokrat @ Jul 27th 2008 8:48PM
If only the Repo Depot would rip off his soul patch too. Man I hate soul patches...
deaftly @ Jul 28th 2008 12:52PM
@Lord Bowser
I fully agree
*sparks a bowl*
Shmil @ Jul 27th 2008 1:26PM
Now all I need a Bionic Commando Collectors edition for the arm, and some collectors edition boots, my cat will be unstoppable.
dark_inchworm @ Jul 27th 2008 3:18PM
Maybe you need two copies of a collector's edition Mario each with one Kuribo's Shoe...
*shrug*
genpacker @ Jul 27th 2008 1:29PM
I hope they make less of them, since we still have Halo Legendary editions still lying around
gore on the floor @ Jul 27th 2008 1:37PM
Great. More "legendary" editions to collect dust in my store.
For every 10 of these they ship to us, there will be 2 people who actually want to pay $130 for them.
We still can't sell the Halo LEs at $80 a pop.
ebola! @ Jul 27th 2008 1:58PM
"Collector's editions" are worthless cash cows designed to capitalize on product hype.
Its cool for about two days, and then you look at the stupid toy and "limited edition tin" sitting on your shelf and wonder how you were so stupid to blow $130 on nothing.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 27th 2008 3:01PM
Unless you're in the target audience for COLLECTORS editions...
...I wonder who would be in that audience...
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 27th 2008 6:16PM
Let me give you a tip:
Rarely is anything designed to be collectible ever collectible. This is because they are made in large numbers and people are encouraged to hold onto them.
The things that actually become collectible are things that are not really big splashes when new or in short supply.
I saw an ad for some "collectible" 9/11 silver dollar bill on TV today. Want to guess if it's actually worth collecting?
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jul 27th 2008 8:25PM
Or we could chalk it up to what it really is.... fan service. For some people, these extras are just frickin cool. Throwing the "collectable" tag on it isn't false advertising in the slightest. After all, as Dictionary.com defines it...
"col·lect·i·ble Audio Help /kəˈlɛktəbəl/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kuh-lek-tuh-buhl] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective 1. capable of being collected.
–noun 2. an object suitable for a collection, originally a work of fine art or an antique, now including also any of a wide variety of items collected as a hobby, for display, or as an investment whose value may appreciate."
A miniature Lancer certainly falls into that scope.
greatslack @ Jul 29th 2008 4:41PM
You should drop them to $35 like Best Buy did.
Obie @ Jul 27th 2008 1:44PM
I'll just take the bare bones regular edition, thanks!
philifan8169 @ Jul 27th 2008 1:51PM
i guess the editions are like the game bigger better and more badass
Vcize @ Jul 27th 2008 1:51PM
According to some of the comments on X3F this may have been misheard and it may actually be $130 just for the lancer replica itself.
Even if the game disc itself retailed for $130 I would buy it, so if this is in a bundle it would be a no-brainer for me. I should probably throw some money at EPIC, seeing as how I got thousands of hours (and counting) of enjoyment out of a meager 60 bucks the first go-round.
If it's $130 for the lancer itself with no game bundle I'd have to think about it, with my hatred for the lancer and all. A torque bow or HoD would be sweeeeeeet though.
OMGOMG @ Jul 27th 2008 2:03PM
Take a chainsaw to the MC helmet.
T @ Jul 27th 2008 2:21PM
And people thought the European price for Rock Band was a rip-off.
At least there the bundle you purchased was actually a legitimate combination of game and required peripherals.
I give it a year before we see the first $200 special edition (not counting bundles that include peripherials)
OWENR22 @ Jul 27th 2008 2:52PM
It's not as bad as the European Rock Band. With Rock Band it cost twice as much for something America had months before. At least you get something extra with this. Sure it may be pointless crap, but if you don't want the junk then just buy the standard version.
Jon @ Jul 27th 2008 2:24PM
the 130 dollars is for a replica electronic lancer sold by amazon its not a bundle. The only bundle available is for the 69.99 limited edition of the game from gamestop.
Snowblind @ Jul 27th 2008 2:40PM
I didn't mind when Halo was doing the special editions, but now it seems every single game being released needs a special edition. It's getting kind of old.
I really don't like this achievement idea either.
Sora @ Jul 27th 2008 4:25PM
Be happy that we're at least getting achievements/trophies and special editions. AFAIK, Wii/DS gamers have neither! (Though, a special edition or two could have slipped my mind...)
forestofdeath @ Jul 27th 2008 4:44PM
why not? the achievements are actually used for something rather than simply enlarging your e-penis.
tmmoore_nc @ Jul 27th 2008 2:43PM
In 4 months after launch, you'll be able to pick it up for $39.99 due to retailers wanting to get rid of it.
Obie @ Jul 27th 2008 2:53PM
I have $130...
Option 1:
Gears 2 with dinky plastic chainsaw.
Option 2:
Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!
j.howlett @ Jul 27th 2008 3:05PM
option #1 it is then
hydralisk456 @ Jul 27th 2008 3:10PM
Seriously, I think I might be more excited about Left 4 Dead than any other game coming out this year, you just can't beat multiplayer zombie stompin'.
Obie @ Jul 27th 2008 6:47PM
@Hydralisk: Shoot em in the head!
daddycool @ Jul 27th 2008 3:19PM
This is a really cool idea with the cross-game achievements. Expect this to be copied by other soon.
