A dynamic duo of details dropped yesterday at the Gears of War 2 panel at the San Diego Comic Con 08 regarding Epic's epic new installment in their well-received locust-splitting franchise. The first of these announcements, revealed by Cliff Bleszinski, was that the title will utilize "linked achievements" to unlock in-game content -- basically, if you have certain achievements from the original Gears of War on your profile, it will unlock certain bonuses (like extra playable characters in the online mode) in the sequel.
The second, and arguably less thrilling announcement, came shortly thereafter -- the obligatory "collector's edition" of Gears of War 2 was unofficially announced at the panel. It will supposedly include a "miniature replica model" of a Lancer, the iconic chainsaw-infused gun from the series. Sure, the special edition's legendary price of $130 may seem a tad unreasonable, but who said that transforming your cat into a futuristic super soldier was going to be cheap?

Yeah, you got that right. I never had patience for seriously. Mostly because it was glitched and the game didn't have a great way of counting your kills.

ha, the true bias comes out. The real reason people bashed battlefield was fanboys of gears, halo or COD4.
the stuff EA is charging you for in bad company are EXTRA weapons just like you defense of this shit. But with EA you have FREE ways of getting those items. Is there a FREE way to play the first Gears so someone can unlock parts in this one that are in the game that one is buying??!!
you fail at logic. I read the article fine. but you pass as tobias

Theres a difference between purely aesthetic character skins and gameplay changing weapons.
Comparing the two is ridiculous.
You fail.

not all the unlocks are known - or do all of you fail at reading as well?
you could very well be screwed by not playing the first gears
I am just pointing out how EA gets slammed while gears/halo/COD4 are looked at as 'innovating'
guess gears 2 will have destructible environments and will be crowned for that

So you contradict your point of slamming Epic, no?
Considering how much effort Epic are putting into the multiplayer i doubt they would have anything as game changing as exclusive weapons. In fact i will bet my 360 on it that it doesnt.

I don't think us, as a society, should be promoting drug use. We've seem how it can wreck lives and the damage it has done across many places in the world. Gears, with its juiced up lead characters, clearly promotes an unhealthy image for a young man. It is so unattainable to naturally obtain such a physique that our young menare resorting to cocktails of steroids to obtain the "gears" look. This is immoral and wrong, and it cannot be tolerated. This is no different to stick figure cat walk models and the problems some young girls have with bulimia.
I thought Mr Bleszinski had decided to become a more mature, professional young developer? Well maybe he should look at the terrible example he's setting with the lead character designs.

I hope they make less of them, since we still have Halo Legendary editions still lying around

Great. More "legendary" editions to collect dust in my store.
For every 10 of these they ship to us, there will be 2 people who actually want to pay $130 for them.
We still can't sell the Halo LEs at $80 a pop.

"Collector's editions" are worthless cash cows designed to capitalize on product hype.
Its cool for about two days, and then you look at the stupid toy and "limited edition tin" sitting on your shelf and wonder how you were so stupid to blow $130 on nothing.

...I wonder who would be in that audience...

Let me give you a tip:
Rarely is anything designed to be collectible ever collectible. This is because they are made in large numbers and people are encouraged to hold onto them.
The things that actually become collectible are things that are not really big splashes when new or in short supply.
I saw an ad for some "collectible" 9/11 silver dollar bill on TV today. Want to guess if it's actually worth collecting?

Or we could chalk it up to what it really is.... fan service. For some people, these extras are just frickin cool. Throwing the "collectable" tag on it isn't false advertising in the slightest. After all, as Dictionary.com defines it...
"col·lect·i·ble Audio Help /kəˈlɛktəbəl/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kuh-lek-tuh-buhl] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective 1. capable of being collected.
–noun 2. an object suitable for a collection, originally a work of fine art or an antique, now including also any of a wide variety of items collected as a hobby, for display, or as an investment whose value may appreciate."
A miniature Lancer certainly falls into that scope.

According to some of the comments on X3F this may have been misheard and it may actually be $130 just for the lancer replica itself.
Even if the game disc itself retailed for $130 I would buy it, so if this is in a bundle it would be a no-brainer for me. I should probably throw some money at EPIC, seeing as how I got thousands of hours (and counting) of enjoyment out of a meager 60 bucks the first go-round.
If it's $130 for the lancer itself with no game bundle I'd have to think about it, with my hatred for the lancer and all. A torque bow or HoD would be sweeeeeeet though.

And people thought the European price for Rock Band was a rip-off.
At least there the bundle you purchased was actually a legitimate combination of game and required peripherals.
I give it a year before we see the first $200 special edition (not counting bundles that include peripherials)

It's not as bad as the European Rock Band. With Rock Band it cost twice as much for something America had months before. At least you get something extra with this. Sure it may be pointless crap, but if you don't want the junk then just buy the standard version.
