Toasty! Midway announces Mortal Kombat: Kollection for PS2
Midway plans to eviscerate PlayStation 2 owners this September, bundling together the previous three Mortal Kombat titles as a single $30 box set. The compilation, dubbed the Mortal Kombat: Kollection, will include 3D fighters Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, as well as the under appreciated action game, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.
According to Midway, the set is designed to let players "refine their skills" prior to getting to clobber the Man of Steel this holiday. However, considering that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe plays more like Mortal Kombat 3 than any of the more recent 3D fighters, we're not exactly sure how many of those skills will actually make the transfer.

All five MK fans that don't own the entire collection already anyway must be really excited.
Vegnagun bwf @ Jul 27th 2008 11:53AM
Looks very similar to the MGS essential collection.
j.howlett @ Jul 27th 2008 12:33PM
and the devil may cry and hitman collections. there is also the gta3 collection but they don't include the stories versions, yet.
Dopple Boppler @ Jul 27th 2008 1:31PM
"Looks very similar to the MGS essential collection."
Except, you know, Metal Gear games are actually good.
GANNONSMASH @ Jul 27th 2008 10:14PM
But the box looks EXACTLY the same.
Lord Bowser @ Jul 27th 2008 11:57AM
In the age of Brawl, Mortal Kombat truly looks archaic.
The previous generation was not kind to fans of Mortal Kombat. I remember Deception; what a deception. If I was given this collection by a friend I would consider disowning them. I'd then invite them over to show them my Jigglypuff.
Sora @ Jul 27th 2008 12:32PM
"Age of Brawl"?! Go play some other fighters. Brawl is A LOW POINT in 2008 fighting games.
Jfk Aok @ Jul 27th 2008 12:34PM
Age of Brawl!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
(sigh)
4MyFriends @ Jul 27th 2008 12:49PM
""Age of Brawl"?! Go play some other fighters. Brawl is A LOW POINT in 2008 fighting games."
Brawl is the ONLY significant fighter to come out so far this year.
Dopple Boppler @ Jul 27th 2008 1:34PM
Mortal Kombat seemed archaic way before even the first Smash Bros. came out, to be honest.
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2008 1:44PM
The only fighter this year that could stand up to Brawl (or surpass it) is Soul Calibur IV, as they are the only fighters that try to expand the genre beyond a 30-second button mashing fest set in a static environment with little or no motivation
Smash Bros always kept things dynamic, hectic, and goal-driven. Soul Calibur has tried to instill a sense of story, and has done 3D fighters right with deeper levels of customization, etc.
Those are the only fighters this year worth considering, and since the two series originally premiered in a similar timeframe (considering Soul Calibur 1 on DC the start of the series), the age of Smash Bros/Soul Calibur seems appropriate to describe the archaic nature of pretty much every other fighter outside of them
Aside from Power Stone. But we don't see enough of that anymore
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 27th 2008 2:16PM
Lord Bowser, stop embarrassing yourself. Brawl is a fucking awesome game, yeah. One of the best games of the year so far. BUT ITS NOT A FUCKING FIGHTING GAME. To say that it is would only prove that you have absolutely no experience WITH fighting games.
It's a beat 'em up, packed with nostalgia, balanced to perfection (sans MK and Snake), and given a few layers of polish. It still lacks the depth in the fighting system for it to stand up to many other fighting games (not in terms of quality, but in terms of the fighting system's options).
The key difference between Smash and other fighting games is that in most other fighting games, almost all moves/combos were situational, meaning you truly had to think on your toes and have superb reflexes to best a skilled opponent. Same goes for Smash, but the difference between a skilled Brawl player and an unskilled one aren’t quite as big as the difference between a skilled, say, Street Fighter player and an unskilled one. Not saying Brawl doesn’t take skill to play - just that it’s much, much easier to master than other games.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 27th 2008 2:55PM
@MrKhan
What about Street Fighter IV and KoF12? Both of those games offer plenty that fans of the fighting genre should be excited about.

Thanks, I couldn't read that comment the first time you posted it; it was just too faded. I'm just messing with you.
Co @ Jul 27th 2008 9:42PM
Dude that's like saying in the Age of Halo in comparison to other shooters. Halo is the ass crack of shooters. And Super Smash Bros. isn't fun.

You know, he's got a point.
Benjamin Gilbert @ Jul 27th 2008 12:08PM
Can't Mortal Kombat get brushed to the side like other terrible fighters? How are people still playing this series?! The DC one plays just as badly as the old ones -- I just don't get it! Exclamation point!
4MyFriends @ Jul 27th 2008 12:18PM
NINTENDO IS KILLING DA INDUSTRY
ManekiNeko @ Jul 27th 2008 12:23PM
So Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe will play like the old-school Mortal Kombat games? I approve! I never liked the kludgy feel of the newer MK titles, which were too stiff to be adequate competition to Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur.
KeenCommander @ Jul 27th 2008 12:28PM
I actually want that, I haven't played any of the 3D ones and it's a fair price. I wish they'd through in the classics (meaning the first two), though - it wouldn't exactly be difficult.
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2008 12:29PM
"And now it's time for the Krusty Komedy Klassic!"
"Hey hey, kids! Wait... KKK? Ohh, that's not good."
Trickob @ Jul 27th 2008 12:52PM
DAMNIT!! You beat me to it!! My joke was going to be something like:
They decided to go with this title after the ACLU made a fuss about the original title,
"Mortal Kombat: Kollector's Kollection."
Jfk Aok @ Jul 27th 2008 12:33PM
These games did not age well at all. So, doing this was...in poor taste.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Jul 27th 2008 12:45PM
Here's a hint, Midway:
Spelling words with a 'K' hasn't been kool since 1992. It just makes your games seem kampy and arkaik.
Ross Miller @ Jul 27th 2008 12:51PM
This comment from Lord Bowser was a victim of friendly fire trying to thwart a spammer. His words are reprinted below.
SSBB is the most enjoyable fighting game Marvel Vs Capcom 2, and the most balanced since Street Fighter 2 Alpha or Virtua Fighter 2. Brawl is up there with the legends.
And you say low point in fighting games for 2008, but what other fighting games have been released this year? I don't recall any of note (there was another Guilty Gear rehash). I know it's hard to admit, being a Nintendo game and all cuddly, but Brawl is the best thing that's happened to fighting games since Street Fighter 2. You can play this game for the next decade and never be bored of it. It's that good.
Lord Bowser @ Jul 27th 2008 1:00PM
You can't vote me down now. Ross is now my bodyguard.
Joystick Hero @ Jul 27th 2008 1:19PM
While that may be true for the reprinted comment, I am now down-voting your response because I love irony.
Ross Miller @ Jul 27th 2008 1:23PM
You think I can protect you from the internet masses? Hahahahahaha. If they want to vote you down, they'll find a way. They always do ... !!!
Arttemis @ Jul 27th 2008 1:24PM
If you seriously think adding *random* tripping mechanics and removing gameplay elements makes a Nintendo party-game sequel some kind of gift to the fighting genre...
then maybe I should be voting you up because that's genuinely humorous.
Oh, how enjoyable it was to vote both of you down anyway.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 27th 2008 2:21PM
Brawl was no low point of 2008, but to say it's the best thing to happen to fighters since Street Fighter... well, lets just say that's the stupidest damn thing I've read all day, by far. It's enjoyable, but it's a party fighter, plain and simple. It lacks the technicality (and yes, I'm aware of the metagame... perhaps you should check out MvC or SFII's metagames) of most fighters. It doesn't have as much depth, plain and simple. To be the best thing to happen to fighters since Street Fighter, it'd have to contribute something to the genre, but all it did was make the game playable for those who were bored of/couldn't get a grasp on games like Street fighter.
Don't get me wrong. I love Smash. But it's not god. It's a beat 'em up.
4MyFriends @ Jul 27th 2008 6:37PM
"removing gameplay elements "
like WaveDashing? Sounds like a bitter tournament player to me, go back to playing your "No Items, Fox only, Final Destination" Melee version.
Frogg @ Jul 27th 2008 1:47PM
I feel like Smash Bros. is more like a platformer than a fighter anyways.
4MyFriends @ Jul 27th 2008 9:46PM
Seeing as many stages only involves at the most 2-3 platforms, how do you figure?
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 27th 2008 10:12PM
Because it plays more like beat 'em up platformers of yore than a fighting game.
(Check my post history, find how I've defended Brawl through everything except claims that it's got a deep fighting system, since I know you like to bring out the 'ur a hatur' card)
chefgon_ign @ Jul 27th 2008 1:54PM
So, apparently Deadly Alliance never existed?
Jacksons @ Jul 27th 2008 6:25PM
Shh, we don't speak of Deadly Alliance.
Rollins @ Jul 27th 2008 2:06PM
Here I was hoping that they'd do something smart, like re-release MK Trilogy. Sigh.
naxe @ Jul 30th 2008 12:03AM
I just got rid of this collection two months ago at gamestop.... they gave me about $11.20 for all three.
I know that was dumb on my part for accepting their offer but i guess thinking that all the sequals were going live up to MK2 was alot less smart.
MK2 in my opinion is the best fighting game ever, i spent days upon days learing everyones fatality. good times
Alex @ Jul 27th 2008 3:21PM
I saw this at Wal Mart yesterday morning... kinda late on the announcement or Wal Mart broke street date.
theclaw @ Jul 27th 2008 6:03PM
These collections are often a good value for both their amount of content, and price compared to buying the games separately new.
There's been several already. Like DMC, Hitman, GTA...
Seroth @ Jul 27th 2008 7:31PM
I'd say it's worth it for Deception and Shaolin Monks. Both were good, fun games.
Creciente @ Jul 27th 2008 8:19PM
If this will come out in Europe as well, I'm buying it. I wanted Deception for a while, but had some trouble finding it. I don't mind getting Shaolin Monks and Armageddon along with it, especially for such a little price.
Skaz @ Jul 27th 2008 9:16PM
I found Shaolin Monks to be an amazingly fluid and fun beat em up or hack 'n' slash(depending on which character you choose) with oodles of unlockables which really add to the replay value. The only reason I dont own it yet is cuz I've never seen it below the 20 mark...
Mr.ESC @ Jul 28th 2008 1:10PM
I'm pretty sure this was avalible already I mean It has been in stores here for months now.
