Sadly, we've gotten used to Hollywood muckety-mucks not actually playing through the source material when they're creating a movie based on a video game. But Mark Wahlberg's answer as to why he's avoided Max Payne while playing the title role in the film is almost breathtaking as both evasion and backhanded insult.
"I didn't want to play because I have an addictive personality," he told People Magazine. "I got more responsibility now than I've ever had with the kids and everything else. I don't want to be spending 14 hours on the videogame and then eight hours on the set. It's not going to work out."
That's right, video game fans: With one wrong decision, Mark Wahlberg could have turned into you, and that's just not a risk he's willing to take.

Eh, there were two minutes between the two posts he corrected, which means the second poster probably never saw the first correction. One would have sufficed.

His comment is BS. I say this because most actors have to research certain things about characters. Spend time learning things in order to get the role down. Playing the game is the obvious research that needs to be done, but he just refused to do it for this role. So he did not do any research, which equals lazy acting, which means crappy movie. Great, thanks Mark!

Play it Mark, or I'm not paying to see you in the movie.
Trying to capture the look of a preexisting character without actually experiencing the medium is just another form of ignorance.

Since he was nominated for an Academy Award for The Departed, I would disagree with you on that. However, I completely agree on The Happening. HE WAS AWFUL!

seems par for the course. Do you think John Leguizamo played a bunch of Mario Bros to get into his role?

Nobody said he didn't study into the character or watch the cutscenes. He's just not playing through the entire two games, which isn't absolutely necessary. The people who really should have played through the games are the writer and director. If they understand Max Payne well enough, they'll get what they need from Marky Mark.

Good for him. Whether the movie sucks or not is going to depend on a dozen other factors than this. It's more important for the screenwriters and director to be familiar with the games than Mark Wahlberg.
Besides, it's not like it would hurt the movie at all if he decided to make the character a little bit more "his," Max Payne's not exactly the deepest character in video games.

Nah, he's too busy being a terrible actor and contemplating when he shall unleash his "Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch" comeback.

This is getting pretty fucking sad, Joystiq. Do your lives really have nothing but video games? It seems like anything that isn't raving praise about games you phrase in a way to coax your readers into anger. He said he has an addictive personality and is busy with kids, he doesn't have to play if he doesn't want to. I mean contrary to what some are saying here, his job is not to know the character but to play the character.
Stop trying to turn everything into an attack. I don't have an addictive personality or an addiction to games, our you implying otherwise, Joystiq?!!?!? OMG JOYSTIQ HATES IT'S READERS. See how simply that was? DON'T DO IT
Also Aaron Eckhart never researched or read Batman before playing Harvey Dent and turned out great, calm down.

I almost agree with you on this one...I have enjoyed several of Mark Wahlberg's movies (especially Boogie Nights and The Departed), and respect his decisions as an actor. Setting him up to be torn apart on Joystiq because he (attempted) to justify his decision just doesn't sit too well with me.

thats the difference between good actors and shitty ones like mark wahlberg.
a good actor delves into the mind of the character type hes/shes playing.. in order to truly be believeable to the audience..
since in this case the audience is... gamers... not playing the game in order to understand the character you are portraying... just seems... fucking dumb.

Agreed.
Roger Daltrey of The Who called Rock Band boring!
Mark Wahlberg doesn't play Max Payne!
The sub-headline for both articles (and countless similar posts) reads "GET YER PITCHFORKS GAMERS!"

umm who cares?
Seriously there isn't that much towards the character besides having that constipation look on his face and speaking in an almost monotone voice.
I think he'll do fine.

It depends on the book. And in most cases, yeah he does need to read the book. But this a pretty fucking straightfoward game that anyone can understand. You don't really need to actually play the game to get it.

And actor doesn't have to play the game. viewing cutscenes and reading dialouge from the game will be sufficient for them.
Playing the game is something writers and directors need to do in order to grasp the feel of the game.
This is non-news.

Meh, at least he bothered to come up with an excuse instead of just saying, "Fuck that crap." I think it's Justin's last sentence that makes this whole article worth it for me. News or non-news, it still made my day better.

My impression after reading what he (mark w.) said: "this guy is a moron".

Don't see a problem here. I'm sure Mark would have read through all the background material on the character and read the script to see what it's all about and so on. He's a professional actor now, I expect he knows what he's doing.
And for the people who're saying "it's a 10 hour game, max"... yeah, sure, if you're an experienced gamer, perhaps. And if you only play it once. If you really want to extract every nuance of the character from the game you'd have to do it more than once. And then you'd have to work out which parts of that version of Max would be applicable to the movie version of Max, because you can bet there's going to be at least some differences...
In any event I doubt most people really want a movie version of the game. They want a Max Payne movie. I'd be more concerned with the direction and writing for the movie than whether someone on set has beaten the game.

Is definitely insulted. Not that I was gonna watch a movie of Max Payne anyway, because the game was too good.. but still, how insulting is that. Oh well, he's missin' out.

As long as he read the script and takes direction I could give a rats ass.
Do you think those canines from Resident Evil ever played the game? Did that make them any less effective in the movie?
Didnt think so...

Well as another person with an addictive personality, I understand what he means. But I don't think that should stop him from studying Max. I mean, he could always get someone else to play the damned game and just watch and take notes. How hard is that?
