Cryptic Studios unveils Star Trek Online, launches website
With the intergalactic cat already out of the bag this weekend, Cryptic Studios has officially announced Star Trek Online and unveiled a website for the in-development MMO. The developer has also released a handful of screenshots and promises to reveal gameplay footage at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention on August 10 (there's a countdown on the STO site if you need something to stare at for the next 13 days). For those who can't make the convention, or decide to stay home because your prosthetic Vulcan ears didn't look just right, Cryptic will be streaming the presentation online.

Thank you for making my Monday bearable sir, that was full of win.

Info for Star Trek Online has been available for a while - they've had beta sign-ups for over a year now, I believe.

You might be thinking of this Star Trek Online
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_Online
It was being developed for a while by another company and during their betas the license was pulled because...well frankly the game was friggen terrible. I hope Cryptic can do something with it.
Dustin @ Jul 28th 2008 10:32AM
Yep, that's the one I was thinking of.
Thanks for the correction! I didn't mean to come off as rude.
Love ya Joystiq!

Perpetual Studios was developing Star Trek Online and then went under. The rights to the license was purchased by Cryptic, and many of the ex-employees were hired into Cryptic. It was assumed they were continuing the project, but now this makes it official.
What will be interesting to find out is if they're looking at a realistic approach or if they're sticking with the shift that Perpetual was starting to make towards a casual playstyle with a more cartoony look. Ugh.

I'm glad someone has finally continued development on this title. I've been waiting for it for ages!

I think all Chinese farmers should be Ferengi.

LOL! So true...

I could never get into Star Trek for some reason. Maybe it was just a tad too cheesy. I am a fan of other sci-fi things, though. But I can still see many people converting their lives to digital when STO comes out.
Broseph @ Jul 28th 2008 11:53AM
same here
maybe I didn't watch enough episodes or something, but there seemed to me to be too much deliberating. Like 80% delibertion 20% excitement.
As for cheesy, im on the starwars side of the fence, so no comment lol im pretty sure SW is worse
Niallers @ Jul 28th 2008 12:20PM
Set Phasers to......LAG!
WorMzy @ Jul 28th 2008 12:19PM
Star Trek: Armada was pretty awesome, hopefully this will be like that.
The only Star Trek game I've played since that would be Star Trek: Tactical Assault on the DS, which gave me motion sickness. XD
FSK405K @ Jul 28th 2008 2:32PM
If STO is a combat-oriented game, .. . . [sigh], then it's really just Wing Commander with a Star Trek paint job. I want to be able to travel through time, decide the fate of a planet's population, investigate cures to weird diseases, negotiate peace talks between competing genocidal races, etc.
mocax @ Jul 28th 2008 12:55PM
Isn't STO a wrestling move?
Hardcore @ Jul 28th 2008 1:00PM
I've remember seeing artwork from this game back when it was being developed by Perpetual and it looked hella more impressive than these screenshots.

Should have called it: Worlds of Star Trek
Halwende @ Jul 28th 2008 5:44PM
Happy it's coming but I'm not sure I like the idea of it being in the "future" of the universe, I would have preferred a LOTRO type approach where you could have a main quest with Picard :)
Plus: "Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek® Online will be developed for both console and PC formats." ...console? Oh man...
RastamanD @ Jul 28th 2008 6:53PM
fuck yeah!
its borg PWNing time
Blank-Mage @ Jul 28th 2008 10:13PM
Yeah, until they become immune to your pathetic weapons.
filbertish @ Jul 28th 2008 8:45PM
It would be cool if "guilds" could pull resources to control a single space ship.
Alcevious @ Jul 29th 2008 3:58AM
This should be advertised as the "nerdiest MMO ever!"
