A new FCC filing has revealed the PlayStation 3 CECHL01. No details are provided, but the likely candidate is the recently-unveiled 80GB for $399 with no PS2 backwards compatibility (BC). All PS3 filings have followed the CECH_01 model -- i.e. CECHA01 is the original 60GB with full BC (check out our 2007 PS3 SKU guide for more information).

What the hell is wrong with Sony? They keep dropping backwards compatability like it doesn't even matter. Every time I save up enough money for a PS3 they drop it and I spend it on something else because the ones that WERE BC become overly expensive! I hate you, Sony!

am i the only one who thinks the lack of bc is only so they can make money off of people buying ps2 games over the PSN? You know it will happen...

That was a suspicion that crept into my head when that rumor of PS2 on PSN came around, but really think it was just a bad move on Sony's part
It certainly hurts the whole idea of the 100 million "upgrading" if their new PlayStation can't do some of what their old PlayStation could
But in the end, it's just paranoid fanboyism. "Soft" Backwards compatibility was the way to go, because "Hard" backwards compatibility disables your ability to shrink/cheapen your hardware.

Well I don't have any of the next gen systems, I wont pay more than 199 for one (um come on with it 360) and there are still games I need to play for the Ps2, and there are some games I'd like to play again. So yeah, it would be nice. Hell, I want a Wii not so much for the Wiigames but for the virtual console releases...

No, because since the units have no BC, they can't run PS2 games. So they can't sell you PS2 games.

This BC is getting to be stupid. First they ignore rumble and say it's not necesary, then they bring it back and turn the tables on BC. They finally have enough games out so that I want to get a PS3 but I wish there was a model available with actual full-fledged BC. It'd be nice to have BC as backup because I'm afraid my PS2 will crap out on me at any moment. It's an old phat one that at one point took a nasty 4 foot drop. It didn't break but some of the plastic got chipped.

Good point, but when a multi million dollar company sells you a console at a very high price with the promise of better bc than it's competitor just to drop it the first chance it gets, it pisses me off.
The only reason some of us have hung back from buying one is because it was too expensive and we're waiting for one with bc. I have many beloved games and don't feel like buying them twice.

Just keep on the lookout for a "A" model. That's what I plan to do. :)

i havent seen a 60GB for months. luckily i have one already but it sucks for anyone else who wants one. BC 80GBs are quite plentiful though right now.

A friend of mine who works for Sony told me that the BC is actually on the new consoles but it's just been disabled. Maybe they'll "unlock" it with a further update?

god Sony, nobody cares about the HD space when you can upgrade your HD at any time. they are seriously misinterpreting the popularity of the 80GB PS3. its because it was the only one with BC not the hard drive size.

MS went to 60GB, Sony felt they had to go to 80GB.

Why would anyone actually buy a non backwards compatible PS3?

The new 80GB PS3 "Core" model number is CECHK01. So this FCC filing must be for another newer model.
