Apparently, developing games for the PlayStation 3 is roughly comparable to that one time we pushed a wheelbarrow full of lovely, scantily clad ladies up and down the beach -- "exotic and tough." Speaking to VideoGamer.com, EALA producer Amer Ajami used those words to elaborate on the decision to halt PS3 development of the Hitler-free real-time strategy romp, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.
"We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture," explained Ajami. "PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it's very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn't designed for PS3." Couch commanders need not give up all hope, though, as Ajami notes EA "might go back and do something with the PS3 later on." Also just like that time we pushed a wheelbarrow full of lovely, scantily clad ladies up and down the beach.*
*We went back to apologize.

Or I could be like most people on Joystiq and believe its all a grand conspiracy to destroy the PS3!
Hmmm... Tinfoil hat or logic?

Ah, the screeching of uneducated fanboy retards is music to my ears.
I've said this a million times now, but the reason is the cost cutting Sony did with the processor (all that cost is that bloody blu-ray crap). Using lots of little cores is cheap way to get extra power, but it's a bastard to program, getting all these cores to do one or two tasks. Anyone who says otherwise clearly has no programming experience, AND SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP!
I'm guessing that Sony expected to be the market leader, and all the devs would have to take a bite of the shit sandwich like they did with the PS2 (which was also a pig to program). BUT they are 3rd, and a lot of devs can't be bothered with the time and expense of jumping though the PS3's hoops.
I really don't blame them ether.

No, just someone with history with multi-core programming.

Right.. so because you have trouble programming for multiple cores, that must mean that it's just downright impossible for anyone else to do so. I smell bullshit, because for every game company that complains about the PS3 being "too difficult to program for" (which really means "we hired a bunch of know nothing college interns who only know how to program directx"), there are many others pumping out great titles that look fantastic.

He never said it was impossible, just harder. Sheesh learn how to understand what you read.
And it's true, it IS harder to program for multiple cores. It takes more time because the smaller cores can only handle a few tasks at a time. You have to parse out the workload so to speak.
Plus, the more experienced programmers are in greater supply for non-multicore work. It's just that it's still pretty new, and not everyone can take time to learn the new architecture. It doesnt mean the PS3 suxors, only that it costs more to develop for because it's that different from other systems.
So A) multicore programming takes more time and so costs more money (check how much Konami spent on dev) and B) most programers have to learn the PS3's dev tools, so that's more time and effort not everyone is willing to pay for.
I love the PS3, and do see it's potential, but it takes time to learn to use that potential and some devs don't feel they have that time. It's not a knock against the system really.

@Tim The Enchanter:
Yeah, I got what he said. I was just being sarcastic. I also write code (although not multicore), and I do understand it is more difficult. However, I just don't buy EA's excuse. They are a huge company with vast resources. Why is it the smaller studios have no problem whatsoever (Insomniac, Naughty Dog, etc) with the PS3, but for some reason a huge company like EA cannot seem to hire anyone with enough talent to make things work. The Dead Space team @ EA isn't complaining. What they really should have said is "our programming team is using an outdated engine" or "our programmers aren't talented enough". Don't blame the platform when there are numerous other studios with much smaller budgets making much better games.

@Aaron: But this is Red Alert 3, not "brand new PS3 IP based on all-new technologies". The point of the successful franchise that you've built up and promoted and developed a big fanbase for is that from a business perspective, it lets you milk your existing talent, tools, and codebase for the spinoff/sequel.
So, when the Executive developers went to the board to get approval for RA3, they didn't pitch a brand new IP, they pitched a sequel. They got a sequel's budget, with the expectation that some technologies and talent would be recycled.
EA is huge, but they don't re-invent the wheel for each game in a series, and they shouldn't have to.
These small developers are starting fresh, with a longer development time, new tools and engines, much larger risk. It's a completely different environment, business strategy, cost structure, etc. etc.
Dead Space = new development, new research, new IP budget, HUGE risk.
RA3 = known development environment, recycled tools, quick development cycle, contained risk.

@ Aaron, I was replying to Autopsy, I knew you were being sarcastic.
And you miss my point. Just because a company has the resources doesnt mean they'll sink them in each project. This was likely considered not worth the effort to them.
The point I was making was that though it's possible, they watch the bottom dollar more than what they're capable of.

Seriously? People play RTS games on a home console?
I've tried it before it's not pretty.
Maybe that new voice activated EndWar game can pull of something new.

PS3 has mouse and keyboard support, so if Red Alert 3 had come out onto PS3, it coulda been just like the PC version. *sigh*

Red Alert 3 is not going to be a blockbuster seller for the console (sorta like how Tiberium Wars didn't do too well on the consoles).
Instead of wasting time spending lots of money for a port that will not turn a profit for the company, canceling it was definitely the better choice.
The 360 will only have a release because its so nearly identical to a PC.
This sucks for the PS3 though, they need some RTS games which are tricky but fun on the consoles.
Anyhow, I believe World in Conflict: Soviet Assault is THE RTS for the consoles.

Who cares? I already have CivRev, which is a blast despite some minor flaws that are soon to be patched.
I'm not saying Red Alert 3 won't be good, but it's not a major loss in my eyes. It just shows me that their devs are lazy.

I guess this is how EA treats it's greatest bread winner.
Once again Fuck you EA! Anyone who contributes to your PS3 sales should be shot and pissed on. As should you.

What I don't understand is how people keep saying RTS games don't work on consoles, like the PS3. Am I missing something here? The PS3 can support a mouse and keyboard. After that, what possible difference is there between a computer and a console for an RTS game?
Posted: Jul 30th 2008 12:48PM dogmaticatheist said
The PS3 does support a keyboard/mouse, however I do believe that keyboard/mouse support also has to be built into the game for it to work. I guess most developers assume there won't be enough people using keyboard/mouse to warrant the time/money investment to make it happen.

Could somebody explain why the PS3 is the supposed most powerful system when both the 360 and PS3 are bottlenecked by videocards that have very very similar performance? Also, ignoring the *possible* power of both systems, they look identical.
