Really, anyone old enough to remember Square's 1997 PlayStation debut with Final Fantasy VII – a franchise that had only existed on Nintendo platforms – shouldn't have been that shocked to see Square president Yoichi Wada sneak back onto the stage during Microsoft's E3 press conference to announce "one more thing": Final Fantasy XIII would be multi-platform.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Wada said, "We always consider the territory and hardware for titles, and I just want to make sure that we're neutral about dealing with companies." Though he conceded that "in Japan ... the Xbox 360 isn't really that strong yet" he acknowledged that in "North America Microsoft is doing very well with its hardware." Sounds about right to us.
Throw in escalating development costs, and you've got a no-brainer. Wada sums it up: "We're now in the age of the multi-platform ... in order to offer our product to the vast majority of gamers we need to deal with multiple companies and platforms." Multiplatform third-party games are increasingly the norm; however, with certain "now-gen" Square Enix titles remaining selectively exclusive (think Infinite Undiscovery), we're not quite ready to call it for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Platform neutrality doesn't sell consoles.

Last I checked, Square-Enix isn't a part of Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony, so why should they concern themselves with who sells the most consoles when they will still make money regardless?

The PS3 and Xbox both have a couple skus between them, (which is very confusing to a normal person) and now third parties want to make all their games multiplatform.
So we have a sea of slightly different consoles which all play pretty much the exact games (if some third parties have their way)..Hmmm, nice.
This reminds me of something, though I cant remember what it was.. but I think it was important. I want to say it happened in the early 80s.

Downgrade in what way? Be more specific?

Goddamn Leobebes,
"Oh yea that is right they hate money and I am tired of Kojima being worshiped as a genius rather than the fanboy that he is."
So? Im tired that you keep spreading FUD...
Have you thought for a second that the fact that he is seeing as a great game designer has to do with the games that he has worked on?
Hell, I wouldn't normally stand being on the freaking sun for so many hours, but Boktai was so amazingly addicting!
"Yes it was me, the reason I want to see MSG4 go multiplatform is because MSG4 fanboys are the most melodramatic fatalistic bunch since the Jim Jones revival."
Wow, so you want see people being pissed? that's low, seriously.
Fanboyism aside, why is it that Microsoft is so into getting all of the PlayStation franchises? (I know that MG started on the SNES, but MGS did not)
"So everyone will skirt my question? Does anyone here think Kojima comes off as ultra nationalistic?
If the consensus is that he is, then isn't it kinda odd behavior to be displayed from a business man and a game designer?"
There, you just made yourself look like a complete idiot.
From a business perspective, do you know of all the ins and outs of the talks between Konami/Kojima and Sony? They could have bought the exclusivity, if not, there many other things that Sony could have offered, for example, they could be backing up the movie. All in all, if they don't release it for the 360, don't you think there must be a good reason behind it?...
From a game designer perspective, there are 2 things you designers aim for, either getting as many people as they can to enjoy a title, or just focus on one console and get the most out of it. Kojima seemed to have opted for the second one. As an example, CoD4, the title as is was great, but imagine how much better it would have been if it was released for just one console?

not very surprising.. Infinite Undiscover can be exclusive, as it's likely not going to be that big a money maker relatively speaking and likely doesn't have near the budget as FF13... odds are the bigger the title the more likely it will be to make up the development dollars behind it. So don't be surprised if FF vs 13 goes multi-platform as well.

Noshino weren't you the one that told Mcpoop to keep his comments brief. Goodness man take your own advice. I liek how you lose it when people talk bad about anything Sony related. :)

what are you talking about! I complained to Nando when I was complaining about people not playing Star Fox Command (seriously, wtf!)
Nah, dude, I needed to answer Leobebes point by point or else the message wouldn't get to his brain
And what I actually told McPoop (or w/e is his name) was that almost all of his comments are long as hell

Im just estimating but if I remember correctly I think 90% of all the games I own are exclusives.
For some reason console specific games appeal to me more I guess, its not a conscious descision.
The only multiplat games I can remember in my collection are Madden, The Darkness (regret that purchase, should have rented, and GTA.
Other games that went multiplat after a time I do own more of though. Thats prolly a testament to their enduring appeal more than anything (going multiplat at a later date that is).
Oh, and if there is a PC version, thats ALWAYS my version of choice.

360 collection: Mass Effect, Gears of War, Lost Odyssey, Double Agent, GRAW, Blue Dragon; PS3 collection: Assassin's Creed, MGS4, Uncharted, Folklore, Motorstorm, GTA IV and Oblivion. yeah, its almost 75/25 exclusive/multiplatform with me, but i see where you're coming from. multiplatform games have never determined which console i buy. outside of the few obvious ones (Resident Evil, PoP, Fallout etc), most of the best games tend to be exclusive.

Where was this preachment of "platform neutrality" the last 2 generations Square-Enix? Oh right, the PS1 and PS2 were obvious monopoly market share winners, so you didn't have to worry about giving 2 shits about the competition, but now you are in a very even and split generation and you can't simply give 99% of all your software to just one platform like you did before in the past.
"Platform Neutrality" my ass, you guys realized there won't be one console to rule them all this time.

It's because they are bathing in Sony money. Sony paid I'm sure a very hefty price to get MGS4 exclusive. Anybody that believes Sony doesn't pay for exclusives is well.. nevermind I don't want to get crude and insulting. Of course Konami likes money and they know they have a hit with MGS4 that is why I'm sure Sony is buttering their bread with dolla signs.

You guys should know square only cares about the money. Why do you think they keep milking the Final Fantasy cash cow? It saved their asses from bankruptcy, created a niche and made their name known. How could they expect to print money if their ""best"" franchise is exclusive to a system that won't come out of store shelves?
Well, I don't blame them. In a business like gaming, if you don't sell as much as expected, you're out of business.
