Resident Evil 4 vs. Resident Evil 5 vid showcases scary similarities
We'd like to share the game comparison video one person dared to create. One person who goes by the nom de keyboard of "WiiSixty" on GameTrailers, which is fitting since they've created a short subject film pitting Resident Evil 4 for Wii against Resident Evil 5 for 360.
The video runs on a bit, but it nevertheless does a solid job of comparing everything from weapon reload animations to door opening animations (helpfully shown above) to the way enemies react when shot. We'll give you one guess which game's prettier overall, but we think the gameplay similarities between the two might surprise you. Well, maybe they won't, since we've already talked about just how much won't be changing from RE4 to RE5.
(Note: Looks like the embeddable video has caught a bad case of the T-virus; you'll have to hit up GameTrailers to watch it.)

I noticed this alot in the new RE5 vids. I personally don't care, I really just want more.
A Pissed-off English Gamer @ Jul 29th 2008 1:11PM
Fair enough you want more of RE4; it was a damn tasty game, despite reviving the cut-scenes-that-are-not-really-cut-scenes-and-will-kill-you feature from Shenmue. I would understand if Leon was the main character in this game, but Chris having those damn similar animations to Leon from RE4 just strikes as lazy.
Noxat @ Jul 29th 2008 11:23AM
RE5 almost looks like someone just did a total conversion mod to RE4, albeit with better graphics.
NoHitHair @ Jul 29th 2008 9:01PM
There's no point in fixing what isn't broken. The RE4 control scheme is infinitely superior to all other Resident Evils.
As for it "looking the same", I fail to see how this is relevant. If I picked up Final Fantasy XIII and it turned out to be a space pirate/football platformer I'd be very upset. It's expected that a particular title will share resemblances to their respective franchise.
koehler83 @ Jul 29th 2008 11:24AM
Uhhhhh...
What did you expect? "Coming off the massive success of RE4, we've decided to do absolutely nothing the same and hope for the best!"?
Tim The Enchanter @ Jul 30th 2008 9:03AM
See: Call of Duty 5
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 29th 2008 11:27AM
I can see the similarities, and is not a bad thing.
RE4 is still a very good this days, and there is no doubt that RE5 will be an excellent game too.
The_Punisher @ Jul 29th 2008 12:01PM

WRE: I own all 3! (4 if you count the DS.) @ Jul 29th 2008 12:08PM
Fernando has stated several times that English is his second language; there's no need to be a dick about it, The_Punisher. How many languages do you speak?
makishima @ Jul 29th 2008 12:27PM
My thoughts exactly Fernando. I loved RE4 on both the cube and Wii. Can't wait for this one :)
Luke @ Jul 29th 2008 12:42PM
You still have not added my wii friend code.
Kye - Me_DF @ Jul 29th 2008 1:09PM
Punisher I wish I could vote you down so many more times.
Really, of all the trolls around here you're of the worst kind.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jul 29th 2008 1:52PM
I'm definitely down for some more RE; I just hope they allow a sort of console FPS-like control scheme this time around so you can still move (albeit slowly) as you aim for precision. :-)
P.s. Co-op FTW!
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 29th 2008 2:44PM
The_Punisher... dude tried to tell me there wasn't a single Xbox game that looked better than God of War II yesterday, best to ignore him
Jacksons @ Jul 29th 2008 11:27AM
That's fine by me, RE4 was incredible.
CAHLITO @ Jul 29th 2008 11:27AM
WOW. There are lots of similarities, but I really don't mind. I love RE4 so much i got it for PS2 and the Wii. I have to be honest though I haven't been keeping up with RE5(even though its first day buy when it comes out on 360) but hey you kill white people in this game too! See this game isn't racist like everyone says!
mr mobius @ Jul 29th 2008 11:30AM
Possibility they added white people because they knew race would become an issue even though it was never an issue before that all the zombies were white people - double standards?
CAHLITO @ Jul 29th 2008 11:38AM
TBH its a video game so it doesn't really matter to me..
I mean in RE4 you exclusively kill Spaniards... but then again what can you expect when the game is set in a small spanish village. Anyways, Enough about race lets kill some zombies, or ganados.. w.e. these are called.
mr mobius @ Jul 29th 2008 11:28AM
Well how many ways do you want them to open a door or reload a gun?
If it isn't broke don't fix it.
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Jul 29th 2008 11:31AM
I reload my guns WITH MY MIND.
DangerMouse @ Jul 29th 2008 11:35AM
The controls are ok, but it was the stiff and crappy camera that i wasn't too fond of.
TX2 @ Jul 29th 2008 11:32AM
Capcom should not have let Shinji Mikami go.
TX2 @ Jul 29th 2008 11:34AM
If only Mikami were on the team.
TX2 @ Jul 29th 2008 11:36AM
What the?
Sorry about the double post there
Jaclo @ Jul 29th 2008 11:36AM
The problem is that it seems like the developers are being lazy if they are just using THE EXACT SAME resources from the previous game, and giving it a facelift. And if the developers are being lazy, the game will not be a good as it could if they were giving it their all.
If this game is just like 4, what's the point of playing it? Unless you really, really like the storyline of Resident Evil. Which is understandable, since the plot is on par with Shakespeare's stuff.
Seriously, as a guy who owns zero through Code Veronica X on Gamecube and 4 on the Wii, I have to say that I'm not liking how the animations are all exactly the same. It's a new generation. More power. Use it, and not just for updating graphics.
ShankShank @ Jul 29th 2008 12:03PM
EXACTLY. My biggest peeve is when developers simply re-skin old animations. Just look at the ones that have been changed. The defensive punch, the way the camera swings when he kicks the door, the interactions with your partner.... I would have to say they all quite objectivly KICK ASS.
Seeing those along side the old animations that I was already starting to get tired of while playing through RE4 is a huge letdown. Especially the enemy animations, thats most dissapointing. I know an enemy can only die in so many ways, but just the simple addition of a new animation or two is what really makes the game feel new.
Like someone else said, now it just kind of looks like a conversion mod, which is kinda sad for a next-generation sequel.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 29th 2008 12:35PM
Co-op, IMO, is the big change in RE5. Even if eveything else is essentially the same game with a facelift, I'm still happy to see co-op.
Jaclo @ Jul 29th 2008 1:21PM
Yeah, co-op is definitely a plus. I wonder if it'll work like Resident Evil Zero if you play alone.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jul 29th 2008 1:41PM
I just wish the control scheme wouldn't require you to stop moving for precision aiming. It would be nice if Capcom would include a "Console FPS" control scheme for those of us who aren't as skilled as we used to be with switching between games. Not a total clone setup, mind you, but if the movement/aiming were mapped the same, that would be awesome.
Wise Guy @ Jul 29th 2008 1:47PM
There are a lot of bitchy gamers out there. Lazy developers??? Do you kids even know what you're talking about???? RE4 was one of the best games last gen. Now you have more enemies onscreen, co-op, bigger areas, new bosses... etc. etc.... How might they make this game better??? Money, time, resources... all go into the development of titles. The RE franchise was based on one type of engine last gen. Then it got a fresh makeover to a control scheme that handles awesome. Now theres more bitching? What do you want... a sword and special powers.... maybe they use Dante for the main cast member. This title is going to be awesome. Stop whining!
Co @ Jul 29th 2008 3:56PM
"It's a new generation. More power. Use it, and not just for updating graphics."
Here's looking at you, Microsoft.
EliteBeatsAgent08 @ Jul 29th 2008 11:37AM
There's a lot more muscle...makes it more bigger and badass and therefore it will be a great game.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 29th 2008 12:00PM
I've heard that somewhere before, hmm wonder where...
Obie @ Jul 29th 2008 11:40AM
Who cares? It looks great!
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 29th 2008 11:41AM
As someone who played the everloving crap out of RE4 on the GC and Wii, I noticed these similarities in trailers pretty early on. It is a little disappointing, but more RE4 (and in HD) isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Vcize @ Jul 29th 2008 11:43AM
Uh...who cares?
I don't know why people expect every sequel to completely reinvent a game series. Granted it's a little different for Resident Evil since they're not really "true" sequels continuing the same story, etc. But still.
A sequel gets made because a game is popular. A game is popular becuase of the way it is. So if you want the sequel to be popular, and keep all the people that enjoyed the prior one (of which there are many if it's getting a sequel) happy, you don't completely change the game.
Sequels should be just that. Very similar gameplay with new maps and characters, an expanded/continued story, a few new features, and fixes for the stuff that was broken/unpopular with the prior game.
It's like nowadays people expect sequels to not even fall into the same genre. Perhaps RE5 should be a sports game so it's not too similar to the last one.
mr mobius @ Jul 29th 2008 12:01PM
I thought Resident Evil did have some sort of story flowing through the games?
Jaclo @ Jul 29th 2008 12:35PM
The problem isn't that the gameplay is similar. The problem is that not only does the gameplay seem exactly the same, some of THE ANIMATIONS ARE ALSO EXACTLY THE SAME. It's a candy-coated RE4.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 29th 2008 12:02PM
It does look similar...in movement. Thats about it. Everything else is new.
Get over it people!
Negativecool @ Jul 29th 2008 12:03PM
Although I accept why they didn't change anything in regards to mechanics, I don't like it.
I don't like the fact that you can't "run and gun." There is no reason why you can't have the control of a normal 3rd person shooter. I can't stand being gimped by controls.
So many times playing RE4 did I curse the fact, as I died, that I didn't have ultimate control over my players actions, like say, MOVING while I shot. Staying in the same area to line up a shot, only to get pwned because I couldn't move.
It pissed me off then, and it will no doubt piss me off even more now due to the fact that this generation should demand more of the games than just pretty graphics.
I guess asking more of the control mechanics this generation was too much to ask.
prtank @ Jul 29th 2008 12:06PM
there were a lot of complaints from fans and the rumor is that they are going to fix that by the time it releases.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 29th 2008 12:43PM
I had almost forgotten about this issue. This should definitely be fixed. Not being able to move and shoot at the same time is plain ludicrous.
prtank @ Jul 29th 2008 12:06PM
i think im missing the point, i swear this franchise had the same formula in all their games for almost a decade and now we realize that they often rinse and repeat the same thing over and over? Capcom is smart, they arent gonna fix something that isnt broken
sm4k @ Jul 29th 2008 4:28PM
I'm completely blown away it took this long for someone to make that comment.
Capcom has only done like 4 or 5 different things with the Resident Evil franchise over the course of over 15 games. Why are people even acting surprised that from 1 game to the next there is little to no change?
jared @ Jul 29th 2008 12:33PM
Who is Kirk? At 2:20 in the video it says Kirk, the locals are hostile.
Manuel @ Jul 29th 2008 1:13PM
Does the fact that Chris Redfield suffers from Turok syndrome (having biceps larger than his friggin HEAD) bother anyone else besides me?
T @ Jul 29th 2008 1:23PM
Hmmm. A brand new game built form the ground up for the next gen 360 has better graphics than a port of a Cube game on the Wii?
This is news how?
CJLopez @ Jul 29th 2008 2:43PM
I wouldn't go as far to say "built from the grounds up"
RE4 for GameCube was built from the ground up. RE5 is built with a improved version of the RE4 engine so is not from the ground.
that guy @ Jul 29th 2008 1:28PM
Oh please ... stop bitching about not being able to 'run and gun'. It's great for certain games, but not for the Resident Evil series. If you're dying over and over again, it's not because the game sucks - it's because you suck. Or that the game is, y'know, challenging. If you want a game with horrible controls, look at Lair. I hope on everything that they don't allow run-and-gun in RE5.
eilegz @ Jul 29th 2008 1:42PM
Well the gameplay itself could be done on the Wii then... too bad that the graphics part nope :(
