"It prints money" just isn't going to cut it anymore in conveying Nintendo's cash flow. The House of Mario announced today that in its first quarter the company brought in $993 million (+34%) in profit! Net sales were up 24% to $3.91 billion. The company sold 5.17 million Wii consoles globally (+50%) and 6.94 million DS units, which means the total lifetime sales of the units are 29.62 million and 77.54 million units for the Wii and DS, respectively.
In the software department, Mario Kart Wii drove away with 6.42 million units sold and Wii Fit continued its quest to save the Fat Princesses with 3.42 million units in people's homes -- more than likely collecting dust, along with the Bowflex and Thighmaster. Nintendo maintains its forecast of reaching a net profit of $3.04 billion and operating profit of $4.97 billion by the end of its fiscal year in March '09.

"Sad, isn't it"
It's sad to see the amount of douchebags that fap to Sony come pouring out the gates just to bash a company that doesn't give a fuck about them, yes.

Yeah I don't understand all the hate for Nintendo. For those who don't like casual games or don't consider them "hardcore", why not get a ps3 or a 360? Hell, there's always the option of building a pc if they're up for it.
I'm tired of people bitching about the games on the wii. The fact that there are 2 other current gen systems, the ps2 and hand held games out there to choose from, there should be no reason to complain. There is something for everyone when it comes to being a gamer.
Sorry if this doesn't make any sense but hopefully my point was clear.

No offense, but some of us who complain we want deeper games on the Wii say so because we already own the Wii and want to use it more. It's not always an issue of people who own other consoles saying the Wii doesn't have the games they would want - its often the owners who say so - Like me. I want to use it more that the game library allows right now.

I have a dream:
That one day there will be no console fanboys. No one will treat any corporation like it’s their college football team. There will be no “Ra Ra Microsoft is the best” no “Ra Ra Sony” no “Ra Ra Nintendo”. There will only be video game fanboys and these people will go to wherever the games they enjoy are. They will never hate a video game console out of spite or superficial reasons. They will never feel the need to aggressively defend a corporation. No one’s loyalties will rest with a company. They will only ever seek out their next video game experience, wherever that may be.
It’s nice to dream an’t it?

I don't know why people talk about only the Wii on Nintendo posts, the DS is THE system this generation. It has the broadest range of games, highest sales and the most wicked original exclusives.
I am happy for Nintendo because of the DS since I'm a hardcore handheld gamer. I have a ps2, but ever since 2004 I have played nothing but DS... and occasionally borrowing friends' systems. I like it because I can have my hardcore dungeon crawlers like Shiren the Wanderer, Izuna and Etrian Oddessey (AKA hardest games EVER) and some really different and innovative stuff like Phantom Hourglass and The World Ends With You... Not to mention wicked classics like FF3, FF4 and the upcoming Chrono Trigger, DQ4, DQ5 etc.
So congratulations Nintendo for making the best handheld system, that it supported greatly by every major developer and a lot of smaller indie developers.

Haven't touched my DS in a long time. Might later this year, but it's seriously got a bad case of shovewareitis right now.

It's always had shovelware... but like the ps2 you don't really have to look far for amazing games in between the copious amounts of imagine, bratz and petz...

I can't say I'm terribly concerned with how the Wii is affecting the market. I own a 360 and a Wii, and will probably pick up a PS3 when it becomes attractive enough for my wallet, and I'm a lifelong PC gamer to date as well.
Killjebus mentioned on page 1 that competition drives the market (or something to that effect), and this might lead to the belief that the Wii (and it's fantastic sales record) will drive the market in a more casual direction. Here's a few points to ponder along with that:
- 'Arcade' type functions on the PS3 and XBOX (XBLA, PSN) have sprung up and embraced casual games, allowing for 2 separate markets on the same console (You could include WiiWare in this, but honestly the entire console is geared towards casual games).
- If Nintendo continues to embrace lower performance/lower cost machines in future generations, this doesn't necessarily mean other companies will; Sony continues to make use of their PS2 sales and presence in the market, and could just as well do this with every console they produce. If the contrast between consoles increases (graphical performance, etc.) over the next generations, then you could very well see two extremely defined - and healthy - gaming markets.
- As graphical realism approaches the unfortunate stop of photorealism, the gap in console performance may disappear as a result of lowering hardware costs. There are, of course, other costs - processing power is probably chief amongst them (think AI and physics engines).
To say that Nintendo is not a competitor in this generation in terms of anything other than benchmark performance is entirely wrongheaded and incorrect. Sales define the fiscal competitive nature of a product; and while it's function may have something to do with this, irregardless of what you consider the Wii's merits as a gaming platform to be - it is still a gaming platform. Many people like myself own multiple consoles - however this is neither new to this generation, nor is it indicative of gap in the competitive nature of the three consoles. The Wii's sales, and popularity will continue to influence the rest of the market - making it a competitor in this generation, irregardless of graphical content, storage capability, or software.

Congrats Nintendo on, once again, breaking you own profit margin record.
Also,
Thank you.
Thank you for giving an old fan your own brand of entertainment, not only through you own top-rate games on the Wii/DS, but also here at Joystiq where you cannot find a more concentrated form of bitter, bitter tears.
I salute you.
P.S.: Pikmin 3 and Punch-Out Wii plz!

You lost. Deal with it. Move on. Sell your Wii if it's causing you so much "pain" and you really think "Nintendo is destroying the industry".
Just shut up already. You've been proven to be full of shit.
Brawl alone however justifies owning a Wii so if you want to sell it that's YOUR LOSS.
Certainly not Nintendo. Cuz guess what? You abandoned Nintendo ages ago and now you want Nintendo to cater to your wish washy "hardcore" needs.
Well Nintendo is doing fine now without you and still making great titles for both hardcore and causal gamers alike. It's just that you guys are so wet for sony that you hate Nintendo with a passion.

Nintendo & Risk don't stand together. They should not be spoken in the same sentence.
It's not risky to release a games console everyone thought would fail after the video game crash after all. The good ol' NES/Famicom sure wasn't much of a risk to Nintendo.
Developing a portable games device with 4 friggin shades of green into the market was not much of a risk. Everyone knew it would sell bajillions in its many iterations.
Developing a "portable" games system that can get you killed because you're staring into a static device with red lines wasn't a risk either.
Trying out new forms of controlling your character (D-pad, analogue sticks, the three prong controller from the n64, wii remote) are of course completely risk free.
Pioneering completely different forms of game play (Smash Bros, Pikmin, Mario Kart, etc) that were different from the norm is risk free as well.
I'm not saying other companies haven't innovated in the games industry nor am I claiming other companies have not taken risks with new forms of gaming. Just don't say that Nintendo is all about furthering what they have when it's a documented fact they have been taking risks since day 1 of their entry into the home console market.

Now you have the money, make a REAL console for once. Live up to the SNES.
Another Wii wont hack it anymore since the Wiimote is the only thing that makes it sell.

Yeah, maybe Nintendo is doing great, but it's only because it's a trendy gadget, like the iPhone. No one but Nintendo is selling any software because the sheep-like Nintendites don't buy games other than WiiFit or WiiPlay.
I haven't even turned on my Wii in about a month.
