Thank God Behemoth has brains, you mean? This game is looking super promising. If it were priced at 22.50... well, that'd be a damn shame. Because I wouldn't be buying it, I mean.

Penny Arcade will be the undisputed champion for a long time with a price tag of $100 (plus applicable taxes, an undisclosed waiting period for all 5 episodes and not even a hard copy to show for it.)

Biggest. Rip off. Ever.

Yeah, and how often do you see price drops on the stores? It's ridiculous that less than a handful of titles have had price drops after a year+ of sale.

All things should be discounted to some extent after 6 months, or at most a year.

The price is wrong, that's been confirmed.

I don't see what's the big deal. If it costs too much money, don't buy it. You really want it? I'm sure you could find a way to make an extra $20. Hell, I spend more than that when I eat out. We're talking $20, not $60, not $200, $20.

You could go sit on the side of a street in dirty clothes and covered in filth, beg for money, and get $20 within 2 days.

The irony in Penny Arcade's XBLA games is that they themselves have had complaints about XBLA games being priced to high since it's conception and then they go and make a crummy high priced game that's only enjoyable for the hardest of the hardcore Penny Arcade fan.

800 points - you know, the standard for all games aside from one overpriced "episode" - sure would be reasonable.

That goes for Castle Crashers and Braid.

It's not as though lowering the price prevents developers from getting money. The cheaper the game, the more people buy it.
If games weren't being so artificially inflated (disc and download forms), publishers would have quite a bit more of my money.

Not necessarily.

If the price is attractive for the average you don't have to lower it, some times lowering the price just reduces the profit.
To be honest 1200 is a fair price for PA game is just that I don’t feel like playing turn based games anymore.

This isn't about lowering prices though. This is about sticking to the already accepted norm (which is frankly already high considering the majority of the content).

There is always a larger audience with lower prices, regardless of what the "majority" may think.
One thing is for sure - the average Joystiq reader opinion is far from likely to coincide with the average consumer.

Maybe a few titles are artifically inflated. Any "special" or "limited" edition version of a title comes to mind. A good amount of XBLA games are too.

But I doubt that, in general, games are inflated in such a way as you imply. When you consider that games nowadays have 100 or so programmers working on them, marketing people, producers, QA staff, and that all of these people need be given reasonable paychecks (although QA gets screwed in this respect) over the course of several months or possibly years, plus the need to make a profit in order to pour resources into the company to develop more games, I think the majority of titles are probably prices accordingly. I most likely neglected a few departments in that example as well.

With the prices as they are if a game doesn't sell well enough companies can go under. Look at what happened to Flagship. Even if Hellgate's prices had been lower is there any real guarantee that they would have sold more copies? Even if they had, at a lower price, they would not have necessarily made a larger profit by any means.

Any word on if Braid's early reported high price is also not yet decided? I won't mind paying $15 for it, but isn't it programmed by one guy? The upkeep on it can't be as large as for Castle Crashers, nor as high as most XBLA titles.

But its like nobody knows the length of the game they just assume they are getting ripped off based solely on price. I picked up Alien Hominid for 10 dollars and used to be a NG's user I know tons about the work Tom and Dan put into something they make. I fully expect to get my monies worth.

People just get up and arms about nothing if you don't like the price don't pay it and shut up with the bitching. Companies don't give a shit about people like us bitching and moaning on blogs all they care about is dollar signs.

So if you feel you're being ripped off hit them where they actually care about....their wallets.

I agree completely with Zen, if you know the past work the authors have done and your content with their work then a measly extra $5 or so is not a big deal.

I can understand if we were shelling $60 for a retail boxed game, but for something around $20 thats gonna keep u entertained or busy for a long time is worth the cash. Its one thing to be cautious with splurging, but its another to be penny pinching to a extreme. Hell no offense to some ppl here, (even though most will), if your 17 and up, GET A JOB.

Good god, it's not about getting a job, or the game not being good. It's about MS and XBLA developers spending almost 3 years establishing an acceptable pricing structure for consumers, and then deviating from it when they think they have a big hit. We expect, and were encouraged to expect, that 800pts = original XBLA game and 400pts = retro XBLA game. Every game that has deviated from that structure has taken flack for it and deservedly so. I don't expect to pay $30 for a movie ticket no matter how good the film is. And I'm not going to pay $90 for GTA4 because it's a better game. This is no different. I for one am tired of the nickel & diming that goes on with dlc. Be a man. Take a stand. "Don't like it, don't buy it"...no shit. It's called a discussion.

In an interview with gametrailers Dan & Tom said its the longest story driven XBLA title. I really believe them when they say that if its trully as long as they say I have no problem paying upwards of 20 dollars for it.

I think part of the problem is with the generational gap. I'm 23 I remember going to arcades and playing through the simpsons arcade game with buddies. I remember just how long before we actually completed the game. The Simpsons at best was a 30 mintue game but it wasn't about the length it was about just how much fun the game was to play with friends.

Castle Crashers looks like it takes everything amazing about 2-D beat'em ups and combines it into one title. Thats why others and I are so excited about it. Its the chance to relive the glory days one more time.

It's happening with everything Bionic Commando, Galaga, Street Fighter, its all coming back full circle.

I don't care about the set price structure because I'm not out there buying every XBLA title. I really like how PSN does things when it comes to downloadables. A game on PSN can literally be anything, any size, any length (Just look at WarHawk). And that is what I think XBLA needs to strive towards. Everyone automaticallly thinks XBLA and thinks small titles to goof of with. Who says it has to be like that?

400, 800, 1600, 1800 points who cares. If you don't want to pay then don't. Just don't spoil it for the rest of us that do want these types of experiences.

@Altairio

Be easy old man (?), because from the way you sound, your just being tight because you have to shell a few more points or dollars. I mean how can you say that no matter how good a title is your not gonna give them there moneys worth. These developers work their ass off to bring games/titles to you every year and sometimes they really don't get a good chunk of the profit at all and get sideballed by their own company. Every penny helps them out no matter how small. Yet your whining about an extra 200 - 400 MS Points.... seriously... Welcome to the real world where expenses go up every year no matter what, any accountant or even US citizen will tell you that.

If anything you can put that lube on your own a$$ and get ready for the future because your way of thinking is down right insane to be penny pinching so hard guy.

Considering Xbox Japan is the "dumb branch" (much like Europe is to Nintendo), i really would doubt that they were doing more than speculating anyway

At the end of the day, it is a 2D game. A very high-quality one, but a 2D game nonetheless. Many hours of content would be needed to merit that price, i think.

Well to be honest I played the game on newgrounds (sorta) and I won't lie to you, it is good and unlike Alien Hominid the art is a lot better. I’m not hyped but I might check it out, I miss beat’em ups.

One of the things that kept me away from AH was the horrible art style. The gameplay was good and better than the newgrounds version but the art style was too amateurish, like the one Trino (cartoonist) does (I was expecting El Santos to appear any second).

Well, dimension doesn't determine value (Wario Land: Shake It! proves as much), but when it comes to digitally distributed games, i think that file size should be a primary determining factor in price, and a full-sized 2D game isn't going to get as big as a full-sized 3D one

Does the game have $22.50 worth of content, based on file size and hours of play? That's the question

I would have no problem dropping $22.50 on a game like Castle Crashers if it was about as long as Viewtiful Joe. If I can get a good 15-20 solid hours out of the single player mode, I'd actually consider $22.50 a steal.

I was willing to give it a shot at the old price. Grudgingly, but I would have at least give the trial version a run and then based my opinion on that.

If the game does end up having 20 levels and each one has enough depth to warrant multiple playthroughs, then even at 20 bucks that pretty damn good considering how some 60 dollar games don't last nearly as long. They just have prettier graphics.
