I think there are a lot of options there, Microsoft could have easily gone with the "choose type of face you want" but instead you can choose your mouth, nose, ears etc which is definately a good thing.

I would like to see clothing achievements in games, that should be a good way to bring in new clothes.

Only one complaint about the list, more hats please? Novelty hats, an Indiana Jones hat, Trilby, Hoodie, Ski Mask for the people who think they are gangster, etc.

I can't believe you guys, this isn't good journalism, I can't believe you'd do a story on stolen code!!--
ha, just kidding.

I'm surprised at how many options there are. If you include the possibility of new items that are game specific (Marcus Fenix doo rag, anyone?), then I think this could be cooler than the Miis.

Avatars will definitely be cooler than Miis. Miis were Ok but Nintendo never added any items and clothes were not editable... I think Avatars have a long future and if later we can use them in game like Miis do in some Nintendo games, that will be great!

i cannot express enough how underwhelming this whole avatar thing is to me. it's really disappointing to me that microsoft really thinks they need something like this. maybe i'm in the minority though?

they're trying to attract "casual gamers." i guess they figure us hardcore gamers aren't going to be scared away by the avatars. it's not required, anyway

If you don't want to use it, then don't. Its not required. You can still keep your gamer pic. Theres no gain in bitching about something that is not going to change for you bitching, esp when you're not forced to use it anyways.

Hey Ian, no need to get upset over your little avatars. Required or not, you still have to admit that they are a pretty lame copy-off of Mii's and Home mixed together in some horrible way

Maybe this is a silly question, but why doesn't MS let people use the camera to create avatars? After all, it's not like it's got many other uses...

sure it does...like exposing yourself in UNO, and exposing yourself in Bomberman, and exposing yourself in Burnout Paradise, and exposing yourself in Texas Hold 'Em, and exposing yourself in Ticket to Ride...oh wait...I see what you mean now.

Kinda like how they did it in R6:Vegas where it mapped your face onto the model.

Hey Xav and I got an eyeful once of some dude in Uno. Not good.

They haven't announced anything but it'd be cool if you could at least use the camera to put an image on your avatar's T shirt or something (I think Little Big Planet on the PS3 will do that). I doubt they'd ever let you map your avatar's face though.

I think that MS has the only character system that is truly endless. This about having a Spilter cell Spy or Merc avatar that controls like it video game counter part. Or with all the big advertisers now on XBL imagine next year "Watchmen" avatars in time for the movie release. You can not do that with home because home is a bit too serious and the Mii's are a little too Kiddish. MS however has made a system that is not too kidish but not to accurate either it is a nice blend in between. Which has the biggest chance of being adopted to their install base.

To all you naysayers about the avatars give it chance when it comes out officially I bet you will make at least one Avatar even just out of curiosity.

I agree that MS did make a good stand. Right between home and the Mii's is exactly how i think it should have been done. I am a hardcore gamer and even i am a little bit curious at how the avatar customization will pan out. Give me ninja gear w/ sword or a rifle accessory and im in.

For those who are underwhelmed by the avatar change, and feel like it is a waste of time, remember that everyone isn't a hard core fanboy like us. I don't think they will be for me, although I will probably play around with them a little, but the other 5 gamers in my house (wife and 4 kids) are all very excited about the avatars, and can't wait to use them. So each to their own.

Word. And if I don't see the "Pancho Villa" collection soon, I swear I'm buying a PS3.

Maybe.

Ok I'm not a masochist, I'm just saying, I'm gonna be real angry.

And where the F are my racial customizations?? I would pay several hundred MS points to change the color of my Avatard's skin (but not the content of their character, of course).

The skin color as well as the color of the clothes and hair will be sliders, not selectable options.

At the very least you should be able to turn your gamerpic into a t-shirt. That way people that purchased gamerpics but want to use the avatar dont feel completely screwed. All they have to do is let you pick the shirt color then whatever gamerpic you want to use is printed in a square on the front of the shirt. This makes way too much sense so they probably will not do it.

I think this avatar thing is a great idea. I have a wii too and i did enjoy making miis until i got bored with the limits. It would be awesome if achievements would give you shirts, maybe hats, or something even cooler like a darth vader helmet lol. Well i do have one question... is it only one avatar per account or will you be able to make as many as you want?

actually i think that's not enough options, specially for the clothing items/accessories. so this list should (and probably is) incomplete.
and i'm also hoping that some older games have retroactive downloadable content for the Avatars.
let's do this thing right, MS~!
