With the bleeps and bloops of our beloved games -- and we suppose Mega Man 9 was the only thing that sounded like that, really -- echoing through a cavernous and lifeless Los Angeles Convention Center, it was clear that this year's E3 was different. But the more things change, the more they stay the same. We still got to play some promising games, we still had to endure some rotten ideas and we still had to roll our eyes at corporate PR foibles. Thankfully, that's exactly what the Joystiq E3 2008 Awards are for.

That was much more fun to look through than any of the other gaming sites' E3 awards. E3 didn't have a huge variety of great things to look back on, so you guys gave it a good spin. Thanks Joystiq. :)
The category, "Worst 3D Castlevania Wii Fighting Game That Nobody Asked For," almost made me pee my pants.

Nice. Thanks for putting some clever--dickish--thought into this, rather than the standard "best trailer," "best wii game," etc. awards like the other sites.

Dead Space? Really? Dead Space?
I understand wanting to make an attention-getting pick that's different from the others. And I agree that the production values of this game are very good. But I don't even think this title wins the prize for Best Horror Action Game With Dead In The Title (see: Dead, Left 4)

As you can tell from many of my shitty posts, putting my own spin on previous comments is a habit - perhaps a specialty - of mine.
how fun. :)

I have to admit, EA did steal the show with this one. While the FF13 announcement was, as Joystiq said, the biggest "megaton", EA by far had the best to offering of games to show. And the more I check it out, the more I'm interested in Dead Space. As little as a month ago I was ready to just write it off as a game that I might give a try during the downtime after the Fall rush. Now there's a good chance I'll buy it when it comes out, especially if Farcry 2 doesn't deliver.

I agree. It should have at least gotten the award from "Most Unique Sales-Figures Presentation". Like, ever.

Hey, we gave LBP an award last year, before it was the "in" thing to do. ;)

Psssh. All the cool kids like N'Gai were honoring LBP last year. And if it happens to be the best game two years running, you shouldn't be afraid to recognize that.
With Dead Space, I understand that we are excited about EA starting to produce some competent, original titles. We want to encourage that and honor that.
I mean, if Jerry Bruckheimer somehow puts together a powerful movie that doesn't insult his audience's intelligence, that's a pleasant surprise and you should give him an "Attaboy". But you don't give him a fucking Oscar for Best Picture.

If you read our hands-on of Dead Space, Copa, you'll find that none of our praise stems from surprise. Only from the fact that the game is genuinely thrilling and absorbing to *play*.

LBP should receive an award for already receiving enough awards and acclaim.

Let me clarify:
YES, there is a possibility that LBP will flop
YES, there's a chance that designing levels will be cumbersome
and YES, LBP was honored last year
BUT, not much was shown of LBP last year (if my memory serves me correctly). So many trailers and previews were given this year, not to mention the amazing Sony E3 keynote using LBP in place of a powerpoint. The flood of info that was released this year showed so many different features of LBP that it is almost like a different game than the one announced at E3 2007.
Once gamers see how much fun it is to essentially create their own games and make the software what they want it to be, they will want some degree of customizabilty in all games.
While not all hardcore gamers will be into it (I know I will!), it will be a way for families to game together, and it will drastically increase PS3 sales. Its something that a level 55 general in COD4 could enjoy just as much as a 7 year old girl playing with her parents. And THAT, is why it will change gaming forever.

Dude, you really have an issue with MS don't you. A Sony fanboy should know better than to cry ripoff.
BTW, loved this little gem from you before: "My guess is that they will even make the new DMC4 easier than the previous ones, since they target the 360 & PC audience."
Yes, 360 and PC players are much less skilled than the mighty PS3 users. That doesn't make you sound like an ass or anything.

So wait, shouldn't the failed song award be named after Ashlee Simpson? I mean, they both are failures, but it felt like more of a Simpson moment after it.

Lol at the ps3 and its fanboys...
That's karma for your ass.
Agree about Prince of Persia. I was a skeptic but I must say that E3 has made a fan and a believer in the series once again.
I can't wait till it comes out. I wonder if there will be a demo.
FFXIII coming the 360 is still a long away from now but already I'm giddy with anticipation. I don't care how many discs it will be.
Not sure why everyone is hyping up EA's Deadspace. Looks pretty stupid to me.

So I guess the fact that AOL is tightening the budget on Joystiq means that we'll NEVER get an updated reply/comment system huh?

I can still chuckle if I think about that Rock Revolution conference. "that's just...lame, really".
The cover band singer gesturing on each phrase of the song, the fail-out live demo and then that chick just ends the presentation right there. No details on the game, the music, just BORK "and that's it!"
awesome!

LOL... Joystiq has given up on PS3 entirely now, they don't even pretend anymore. It looks like this post was kind of a joke rather than serious "awards", but have anyone listened to their podcasts? I unsubscribed it after the last one because they don't talk about the platform at all. What's the point if I don't get any news about platform I own?! Or listen to McElroy say "who cares about PS3". Well, what's the point of running a website that covers all platforms yet constantly gives a finger to anything other than Xbox? It's your website (or AOL's), so you can do what you want, but you can be honest and come right out and say that you only support one platform. And leave the PS3 coverage to fanboy site. Meh!

You got to understand that Sony fanboys last generation had uncontrolled, and unbridled dominance of the video game industry. It was all PS2 all the time. Now that this console generation is split evenly, I know the Wii is kicking ass and taking names but its created its own niche, Sony fanboys get kinda bummed out that the PS3 has to live in a socialist landscape with other consoles now.
Its ok guys just get a 360 too? Or is the system the eeeeeeeevil?

I didn't own PS2, had Xbox last gen (still works!). I can afford 360 but why would I buy it since I can get most of the exclusive games it has on the PC. I also have a Wii for social gaming. I'm not anti-Xbox or something, I would've bought it if it didn't have little something called RRoD, and variety of games (I would buy it in a heartbeat if it had Team Ico game). And I don't see any games on the horizon that would make me want to buy it.

How the heck have they managed to make it not-annoying now they've removed the rewind feature?
(that feature should be in EVERY game ever. Why in the name of god have they removed it?)
