First official RAGE screens feature marvelous mutants
66
After months of teasing us with crummy off-screen snaps of its forthcoming "post-apocalyptic open-world shooter," id Software has evidently heard us shouting "Show us your RAGE!" (in our best Raging Raven impersonation) and caved in. Behold: two nice, high-res screens of the game. Yep, two. But at least they're really purty.
Some on staff are wowed by the textures. Others are happy to see that Sloth from The Goonies is still getting work. Still another faction here at Joystiq HQ is frantically checking Pricewatch in hopes of scoring some good deals on the hardware upgrades they'll need to play this beast at 2 billion x 1 billion resolution on their PCs.

Looks pretty badass... Not Microsoft needs to let them do this with 3 discs so us XBOX owners arent screwed. I aint buyin a PS3 for this game or maybe any.

Just an XBOX guy man. Purchased it instead of a PS3 because of pricing plus game selection. Don't have a need to spend the 399$ pricetag on something that my XBOX will do fine.

I doubt MS wants the PS3 to start having an upperhand on multiplats. It will be released on 3 discs. Bet on it! Just like when Capcom stated that the PSN versions of SFIITurboHDRemix and the Bionic Commando remake would look better on PS3 because of XBLA limit restrictions. They lifted those restrictions.
IMO MS is in it to win it, so if its not 3 discs then that will tell me something about them. Do they wanna be greedy or do they want quality...

"Fanboy much?"
So now we're a fanboy if we don't buy every system released? Possibly the stupidest thing I've read today.

No, but telling people you don't like PS3 when no one asked and it wasn't even mentioned in the article is slightly trollish.

I for one actually find it the most rewarding to own only one console per generation (i guess when speaking about PS3/360). While I certainly could afford both a playstation and an xbox if I wanted to... I wouldn't really be able to justify spending the money to fully 'flesh out' both systems. For me personally, I'd rather have only a 360 and all the bells and whistles (controllers, games, cameras, plastic-guitars...) than both consoles and then try to split the experience (and money) between them. For me, I can get a fuller experience sticking with one.
So I make the best call I can make and go with the one that gives me the most entertainment... and for me that's the 360. That certainly doesn't mean others have to share my opinion, but it does make them quite narrow-minded to assume that ownership of only one console makes anyone 'a fanboy'.
If 'a real gamer' has to own both consoles, than does a 'real TV fan' have to own both a 'direct TV' and 'dish network' subscription? Just seems silly to me.

The previous article about RAGE says the XBOX edition will look shitier than the PS3's unless Microsoft lifts a fee for having more than two discs. So my post about XBOX over PS3 is relevant. No need to use words like Trollish.

John Carmack writes rendering engine's.
He has never been off form. Gameplay has never been his thing.

Well first thing, that's not true. He used to make good games and now he doesn't. You just have to look back 10+ years.
And let's just say you are right for argument's sake...then just make the engine and be done with it. He's obviously "trying" to make a "me too" game here, and we don't need it.

John Carmack has always been either a programmer, or a technical director.
He has never been the person who drives the game play portion of a game.
He lives, breathes, and thinks about rendering.
His contribution to game play has been growing smaller ever since wolfenstien.

Newegg is where I buy my PC stuff. gotta love those prices over there.
Might have to upgrade my old 8800GTs for some newer Radeon HD 4870s, thanks to this game.

A Radeon HD 4870 trumps your 9800 GTX+, "d00000d!" And even outperforms Nvidia's higher-end GeForce GTX 260 and 280 on some tests. Educate yourself before spewing garbage.

I'm going to hang on to my 8800 GTX until somebody comes out with a single card that can run Crysis on full specs.

So true,
Imagine if all the mutants in this game had breasts that they fondled and licked while they battled you...
Alright! Who wants to make a game?

what does it take?
Cos all you usually get for games is pretty pictures and pretty video ;-)
(if you look at the real high res shots then Rage looks amazing.. better than some stuff from movies a few years back. Plus, its a Mad Max setting.. how can that NOT make you excited?)

Good gameplay, decent story, and maybe something new.
It seems like more and more games these days are focused on creating amazing graphics and skimping on the rest of the game or just delivering the same thing we've already seen a dozen times or so.

But you aren't gonna find out if it has good gameplay and a good story until after its released.
A mad max inpired FPS + Car game seems about as new as you are gonna get.
(I'm not saying its gonna be great, but if you aren't impressed by it at this stage, you'll never be impressed by any FPS/Genre game at this stage. )

That's true, I'm not really impressed with any games based on screenshots. Unless it's a sequel to a game I already like or the screenshots show something unique. Like the art style of TF2, which sort of falls under both those categories.
Also, Fallout already did a Mad Max-esque setting. There's been a few Mad Max games and there's a new one in development by the guys who did God of War.

Meh, dont really care about this game yet. Too much Mad Max. Graphics remind me of that Final Fantasy movie years back too, the graphics are good but the people just dont look like people

Which Final Fantasy movie?
Spirits Within looks MUCH more realistic than Advent Children.
But anyways this game's graphics pale in comparison to Square's CGI... that level of realism is still a decade away.

I'm a big fan of John Carmack's work as a programmer, but id's distinct lack of actual game design skills is probably going to rear it's ugly head again with this title. It's a shame really, just imagine how awesome other more capable studios would be with Carmack at the graphics engine helm.

Some of them could certainly use his touch (i'm looking at you Haze!), but those guys at Insomniac, Criterion, Bungie and Epic (GOW division) are doing a pretty damn fine job without him.
Point is, he's not the only super-visionary tech-pusher anymore. He is a tech genius, but some other guys are doing some damn amazing things, and you don't need to buy a new computer to play it.

Those are some nice bullshots you got there.
Seriously, at least try to make bullshots not seem like bullshots. Ya know, don't pose everybody like it's senior picture time and add a ridiculous amount of post-effects for starters. Especially when the post-effects don't even match up from one picture to the other. The two pics look like two different games for gods sakes.
