So, let's say someone just handed you the keys to a game design studio, and with it came a never-ending pile of cash, with which you could buy the rights to any characters or franchise. Hey, it's a fantasy scenario; we can't have road blocks like laws getting in the way here. So there you are, king of your own gaming castle. What do you direct the legions of programmers to work on?

I would buy out Valve and let them continue with what they are already doing, but I would make them port everything over to the wii. Start with portal, then Half life 2, Episode 1 will follow, then Ep. 2, thn Team Fortress 2, then the whole kit and kabootle, the orange box. Then, they would have to hiurry up with episode 3, and make a new portal game.

Mother/Earthbound. Nintendo will never do it for us anyways, so why not take over that company with my limitless sum of money? While I'm at it, I'll focus the theme of development on Core games. Why should casual people, who be satisfied with or without, get all these games?

I'd have Square-Enix start work on a Vagrant Story sequel. Maybe a FF Tactics for the Wii.
+1 for the old school videogames.com screen shot.

For the wii I'd make a good multiplayer FPS with a good story for the single player and co-op campaign. It would have graphics better than Halo 2 (the wii can do better than xbox 1, right?) and all the multiplayer modes we come to love. Also it would somehow bypass the friend code system (this is fantasy remember?) and do a match making system akin to Halo 3. So basically Halo 3 multiplayer + Gears of War campaign mashup, except on the wii with metroid controls and better than Halo 2 graphics. This is basically what I hope the Conduit will be, I guess we'll see...

I'd buy Sonic and save it. A nice, 2-D Sonic for Wii. One that moves fast. And features Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik and that's it. No crappy furry friends, and Sonic not being his own crappy furry friend.
Or Zelda and Mario, just to say I owned them.
Or a massive Professor Layton for Wii. I'd love it.
And I'd do it all with zero waggle!
Sorry. I was totally silly with this post.

Yo, a proper sequel to de Wind Waker. Phantom Hourglass was shit and didn't tie into the first game at all. More and bigger islands, more storytelling, play as tetra, and have the story divided up into chapters, Mario Bros and RE4 style. ie. 1-2, 3-2 etc.
In each section you would have some task to do and something important would happen in the story; so much so that when you looked back on playing the game if someone asked, 'hey remember chapter 2-2' you'd be like oh yeah, the fire temple, where link ended up getting knocked unconcious and tetra had to blah blah blah.' Of course at any stage you can go do what you want in Zelda style.
The treasure chests would have meaningful tresures in them like weapons or blue tunics etc. and not just rupees. And you could find magic pearls that show you the history of the races of hyrule in cutscenes (as if you're looking into the pearl - think harry potter's memory system) that bring you up to speed on how everything became the way it is. Other than that more of the same Wind Wakery goodness.

Playing as Tetra would be a huge mistake.
Plus, in case you haven't noticed, there's been no any sequel to Twilight Princes. There's not a "proper" sequel to any of the Zelda games; that's part of the series. They all interrelate, but they all can stand alone.
I wouldn't want a game to come out where I knew nothing about what was going on because I hadn't played the one right before it.
Additionally, Nintendo never goes more than a game or two, handheld or not, where Ganondorf isn't the main enemy.
They never make "proper" sequels. The games stand alone from each other or have kind of half-sequels, like Phantom Hourglass or Majora's Mask, where they relate directly to another game (Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time, respectively) but aren't direct continuations of the other game's story.
And if you're making a Zelda game that's a "proper" sequel, make it to Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker can't even compare.

I'd buy the rights for Crash Bandicoot, and then kick Vivendi in the face with my giant boot.
Then I'd sell Crash Bandicoot to Naughty Dog. There, Crash Bandicoot is revived, horray! ^^
And after that, i'd buy the rights to Rayman, hire Michel Ancel and a giant staff, and i'd share my brilliant ideas with him and he should be the project leader for the real Rayman 4, and it shall be released by a company that's not Ubisoft. And it shall be awesome!

I'd go make a pokemon game with real time battles with lots of depth where you directly control a pokemon. Throw pokeballs with the wiimote and stuff like that feels like it would be awsome. It would have the 4 regions and every pokemon and would be a huge area to explore.
I'd also make a bleach game where you go through the story and fight off hordes of hollow with switching between characters as an option.

I would buy the rights to 'Pirates of Darkwater'.
For those of you who don't know about 'Pirates of Darkwater' it was an awesome TV show that was cancelled and because of this the story was never finished; although they did make a game for Sega Genisis. The story for the game supposedly began and finished the tale that the series never finished. I sadly never owned a Sega Genisis.
So anyway, after I had attained the rights, I would start a new TV Show. Maybe 3D graphics (Like Final Fantasy: Advent Children) or Live action(Like the New Robin Hood or the soon to be aired Legend of the Seeker). Then about halfway through the airing of the show I would release a the game.
Now for the game, I would want it on the Wii and possibly a DS version because the TV show is family friendly, hopefully Kids will want the game.
As far as cinematics go, the sky is the limit. But as far as graphics on the Wii, I would push them to be almost if not as good as the cinematics. My reasoning behind the Cinematics being guaranteed awesome and the ingame graphics being not as good is this: Final Fantasy III and IV for DS. The opening cinematic is great but the ingame characters are nothing like the cinematic because of the code that is running behind the scenes to make the characters playable.
The game would follow the story of the TV show but have extra Content to please the Audience. Such as hidden/unlockable Levels that have nothing to do with the show but are just as fun to play. It would either be a platformer like Mario and Zelda( with more Pirate Action) or and RPG like Skies of Arcadia(only with less Sky more water).

Pirates of the Dark Water was made by Hanna Barbera, and like it's companion pieces that premiered as part of the studio's effort to re-invent itself for the '90's: SWAT Kats and 2 Stupid Dogs, was canceled to make way for that horrible Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. The remake failed, and H-B went bankrupt, was totally absorbed by Warner Bros, who made them into an internal studio for Cartoon Network, where they made some great shows, but never approaching the awesomeness of their three early '90s projects

First thing I'd need to do before I started any of this would be to gain control of Nintendo. I'd immediately start work on a new console. Highlights of this console would be:
High end graphics
1 TB+ Hard drive
Full blown integrated internet
Freakin' amazing controller, will be explained in a little bit
Freakin' amazing virtual console service, will be explained in a little bit
Removal of friend codes and implementation of a username on a system
Full backwards compatibility with the Wii and Gamecube
Connectivity with the Nintendo ES
Completely region-free
With the exception of music, no multimedia abilities(As far as I'm concerned DVDs and the like don't have a reason to be in my game machine.)
The beauty of my controller is that it isn't really a controller so much as an enabler. You would get 1 full set of controllers going all the way back to the NES. You'd just plug in the enable to the correct controller and off you go, so if you wanna get some old time SSB64 on just plug into a 64 controller and be on your merry way.
The Virtual Console would also receive the improvement that I think is the absolute best a service like it could get. Let me go into detail. I would start off by putting all titles from the N64 and back, as well as from the DS and back, onto it from the start. You know those codes that come with Nintendo games? You can use those to basically redeem that game and download it for free. So I'll basically be allowing you to create a complete digital copy of your game library. Prices would also remain fairly cheap. $5 for a DS or 64 game at the highest.
From there I would start on the new DS. Its main features over the old DS would be:
Improved graphics
Improved touchscreen
Widescreen display on both screens
Completely region-free
Transfer cartridge
Now. The one thing on there that stands out from what you'd expect is the transfer cartridge that comes with every new handheld tentatively titled Nintendo ES, as in the next generation of the Nintendo DS as per alphabetical order. This is where the main connectivity between the NES and the new console would be. You know all of those N64 and past games? You can transfer one or two of them, complete with your save files, over onto the transfer cartridge and play them on your ES. All you'd have to do is turn it on and select transfer. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Now we get to the games. First things first. Partner up with Square Enix and create Super Mario RPG 2. Then go and create that dark Zelda title all of you have been waiting for. A third installment to the Golden Sun franchise would also come about. Fire Emblem would go back to older games in term of difficulty, for those who've played the older FE games I think FE6 is a good place to start. Then I'd get the numbered Final Fantasys back onto Nintendo consoles.
Then we would get an MMO called Nintendo's Kingdom or something like that. Basically it takes a large majority of Nintendo's franchises and puts them all together in one world. Most franchises would be worked into classes and the like but some would have to be delegated into skills and NPCs. This game would be done in collaboration with Blizzard.
I say most of Nintendo's franchise because there would be one missing, Pokemon. However don't feel left out. Pokemon is getting its own MMO that completely encompasses the Pokemon universe from Kanto to Shinou.
From there I'd be getting the old Rare team back together and we would get a real Conker's Bad Fur Day sequel and not a horrid remake like the one they made for the Xbox. We'd also be getting a new Perfect Dark and a new Donkey Kong title.
My next idea is extremely radical. I'd partner up with both Sony and Microsoft and create, or have someone else create, the first online game that is truly multiplatform. By that I mean that if you have a Nintendo console, your friend has a new Microsoft console, and your other friend has a new Sony console you will all be able to play the same game online with each other. Preferably this would be something like Monster Hunter.
A new Smash Brothers would also come along. Here's the best part. Everything from the three games before this one would be in it. Removed characters, modes, items, stages would all return in full glory. Characters would be updated and no two would be the same. All the advanced techs that were removed in the transition to Brawl would return and we would get rid of things like tripping.
Don't think I'm forgetting about the little guys or third parties either. There would be incentive programs such as funding to allow them to produce games for the new consoles.
I think this would be enough to entice anyone over to Nintendo. And all of this is just the rambling thoughts of a Nintendo fan over the course of a week filled with plenty of nights where my head just wouldn't stop thinking. If you want more indepth I can see what I can muster up.

Also, I'd buy the games that only released in Japan. This part of the world needs those games.

I'd put Goldeneye 64 on the VC! Even though it should be there already! And the original Smash Bros on the VC too.
Then I'd get to work on a real lightsaber game that uses the MotionPlus and has all of the characters everyone actually wants in it (in other words, Darth Vader).
Then I would put together some kind of hard drive for the thing.
And then I'd make my own game called Band Hero (after I bought all the companies needed to do so) and make them all better on the Wii than anywhere else. And I'd make all of the dang instruments work in all of the games.

More Fighters Megamix, Sonic the Fighters, and Burning Rangers

Total Mother Compilation for DS, all three in one, with the last dungeon of Mother 1 balanced so that it is actually beatable.
Have Factor 5 make a Rouge-Leader style game, but with the Clone Wars scenarios

I'm not sure if I'd take over anything, since the ones worth taking over are already doing a great job.
But if begging and pleading actually worked:
I'd beg and plead ATLUS to stream out a ton of RPGs for the Wii just to shut people up! You've done it before on the Playstation and on the PS2, you can do it here too!
I'd also beg and plead KOEI for some tactic games for the Wii that can effectively use the point-and-click.
I'd ask for TECMO to spread its wings freely on the Wii, 'cuz I know they could do a lot with it.
I'd beg JALECO (if they're still alive) to do something... ANYTHING.
I'd plead NAMCO to make a few games here and there for the Wii, just to shut up some other people.
I'd then tell Capcom to keep doing a great job.
I would proceed to ask NIS to consider doing something for the Wii, despite the fact that I don't like them.
I'd pat EA on the back for a minute since I actually liked MySims.
And then I'd do the unthinkable...
...I'd get on my hands and knees and politely ask Square Enix to make more games for the Wii...
...
...
I have to do it for the sake of people shutting the heck up. For the good in the name of Nintendo.
(I REALLY dislike Square Enix... since the days of Squaresoft. Personal reasons)
But that's only if Begging and Pleading did things.

I read my last post and though, hell.
I'd make Ocarina of Time again. One with updated graphics and mechanics. It'd use MotionPlus for some accurate swordplay, the Nunchuck'd work as a shield again (but better), and Link would be left-handed.
Also, there would be some added side-temples or whatever. Like Master Quest, but better. Like Master Friggin' RADNESS Quest.
If you think that Link being left-handed wouldn't work, as most players are right-handed, come to my house. I play TP as well as anyone else, and I'm left handed. Crossing the controllers doesn't harm gameplay at all.
Also, Shigeru Miyamoto would be my co-director. He's a visionary. I'd just make him run everything by me.

I've neglected the DS, I'm sorry.
I'd make a new one. One with channels, much like the Wii Menu. microSD Cards could add backup storage, but it'd have built-in memory. I'd stick to one touch screen, though.
Also, it'd be a cell phone. Yeah. One that works on Wi-Fi (and not just WEP) or off towers with a paid plan. It'd go to Verizon, but Nintendo would be in charge of the interface (Verizon's so clunky) and the hardware. Kind of like Apple didn't go with the standard AT&T stuff, they made their own interface.
It'd be beautiful. Maybe even have a Virtual Console that drew games straight from the microSD card. They wouldn't clog up the built-in memory. It'd have Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. The Game Boy Advance slot would still be there, though. After RedOctane used it so innovatively, I would hope other companies would try as well.
I'm a dreamer, I know.

Only samfish asked for Okami II!? That'd be my first game i'd start work on.
Then I would port MOTHER & MOTHER 3 to WiiWare.
After that, I would get the rights to Pokemon and make a game where it was kind of dark and you could see the game in the eyes as someone who works for Team Rocket(or whoever is causing trouble nowadays)
After that I would start work on Paper Mario 3 and make it in vein of the original Paper Mario's where it's a turn-based RPG.
I would then get my hands on either Cod or Moh and make a game with great graphics and robust online modes that would be a Wii exclusive.

I would take Nintendo and take out the kiddy style from some of the games (like Wii sports and Wii music).
- Start working on new title like 3rd person adventure dungeon game, with focus on the weapon upgrading and deep personalizing the characters. It most accepts various styles from close combat to long range magic or weapons.
- Armored Core like game, or get Armored Core for the Wii. With lots of user testing specially on the level design, doesn’t matter if it takes 2 years or a bit more on the making.
- Nintendo Licensed machinima software with youtube and community support. Also that it let you to create your own 2D platform Mario, 2D Four Sword and 3D Zelda levels with online support.

..... wait a minute, your ideas are VERY Sony-esque!
Don't turn Nintendo into Sony! There's already a Sony!

I would find the original Fallout and Planescape:Torment teams (man, to think Interplay and Black Isle changed so much) and have then make a game.
The guys that wrote those game should win the Nobel Prize for Literature (really man, I would buy a book with just the dialog of those games). The references were crazy funny (the Monty Pyton Knights in Fallout are one of the best moments of videogames).

I would get a team together to make a GOOD sonic game focused on running down long wide open areas of land with hills you could launch off of. Then add band guys and futuristic buildings and junk to scale with several paths to fall off of and climb back up without evil pits of insta death.
Sonic CD would be the teams bible and we'd all get together every friday for brainwashing. Just to make sure we all know that sonic is NOT a sword waggling were-wolf/hog and the main point is to run really fast.
Course Ive always wanted to make a Cheetah wild life simulator with an extra sci-fi story bit kinda like ecco the dolphin, but thats another dream of mine.
Another one would be bringing back Alien Soldier or Guardian Heroes in fully animated 2D sprite glory this side of Wario Shaking.

I'd buy the rights to Mario and Sonic and team them up for awful games.
How about a balance board game of Mario and Sonic kayak racing? You sit on the board and Wiimote in one hand, nunchuck in the other, you paddle.
That'll sell at least 5 million Balance Boards.
