E3 awards: Fallout 3 = Best of Show; LittleBigPlanet = Best Console game

This is it, folks. The winners of the official Game Critics Awards for E3 2008 – as chosen by 36 representatives (including yours truly) from most of the leading video game outlets – have been revealed. Leading the pack with two wins each are Fallout 3 – winner of "Best of Show" and "Best RPG" – along with LittleBigPlanet – winner of Best Console game and Best Social/Casual/Puzzle game.

The top publisher was EA (just like in our own awards) with five wins, while Sony took second place with an impressive three wins. In terms of platform concentration, the Xbox 360 barely edged out the competition with eight wins versus both the PC and PS3's seven (for those of you keeping track, the Wii only managed one win and that was for its version of Madden 09). "Previous Fallout games have always funneled the player into a particular character type based on past actions and responses. Act like a fabulously magnanimous arse for your first few quests in Vault City and certain quests will start dropping out of reach for you – you can’t become Captain of the Guard if you’ve got false citizenship papers and a liberal, peaceful attitude to nearby towns.

Fallout 3 however has a slightly different ethic and has spun this round somewhat because there’s a hidden flaw wrapped in the model of the previous games – that the player doesn’t always know how their options are being trimmed, their choices culled. You might miss out on important quests and information without knowing it, so as well as extending development time by factoring in all this redundant content, you can leave players feeling falsely trapped or locked into a game they don’t want to play.

Fallout 3 avoids this neatly then, giving players a constant string of second chances. They fixed a crucial flaw in Fallout. Now your actions no longer mean shit and you can do everything!

Oh crap, I just read that. It sounds like Bethesda just fucked the Fallout series even more. I'm still playing it, but that doesn't sound too good at all.

ARGH, god forbid an RPG where you had to stick to ROLE PLAYING.

Fuckity shits. I was giving Bethesda the benefit of the doubt (I still kind of am, hardly though), but NOTHING I have seen from the atmosphere and world of this game does the original two Fallout's justice.

Ugh, October is gonna make me broke.

I think Rhythm Heaven should have won something :( It looks so damn awesome. Its like warioware with rhythm.

Was going to wait for FFXIII to show up before picking up a PS3, but screw it. Little Big Planet sounds too damn fun to pass on.
