Left 4 Dead on PS3? 4geddaboudit ... 4 now
Despite what OPM says, Valve's zombocalypse game Left 4 Dead is not coming to PS3, according to Valve. IGN spoke with Doug Lombardi, information guru at the house of Newell, who informed the site there is no PS3 version of the game "currently in production."
Not so fast, OPM could still be on the ball. Lombardi may be speaking specifically on behalf of Valve -- which is all he can really speak for -- and perhaps EA is developing a PS3 version separately. That worked out really well when EA did the same for Orange Box on PS3, didn't it?

Seems history tries to paint the EA port as the worst thing ever when most reviews I saw, said that apart from a few places in Half Life having framerate issues, the port was ok. Portal for instance was said to have no major issues.
Can't help but feel the fanboy war is trying to turn an anthill into K2.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Aug 5th 2008 10:52AM
Remember kids. If it's EA, then it's the worst shit evar!!!
WhoMe @ Aug 5th 2008 11:20AM
This is just Valve spinning their usual BS. They wanna portray this as one of their dear darling 360 exclusives, while we all already know it's coming to other platforms.
Of course they can't deny the easy money of brining it over to the PS Tres, so they will do it, or rather, let some one else worry about it while they cash the cheque.
Meanwhile of course they wanna keep this under wraps because of their infatuation with the 360, as if any one is gonna buy a 360 over this game.
Valve is quickly losing credit with me.
deadjesterx @ Aug 5th 2008 11:58AM
For the poster above, not Christian.
And you seem to be spinning the usual Playstation fanboy BS. Valve is, if anything, a PC developer first and foremost. The only reason they prefer to port to the 360 is because it uses the same coding as a PC and because the hardware is similar. That's it.
The PS3 has considerably different hardware compared to a PC and uses a different form of coding, making it more difficult to code if you're a company that is use to developing for the PC.
I don't see how they'll make "easy money" by porting it in-house to the PS3, especially when you consider the amount of money they'll have to spend to create said port. Besides this is ment mostly for the PC if anything. As I said, the only reason it's 360 bound is due to the two platforms being very similar.
"Valve is quickly losing credit with me."
Oh, I'm sure Valve is so heartbroken over that.
DangerMouse @ Aug 5th 2008 11:52AM
^What are you talking about? They didn't start this rumor. They've always said that L4D isn't coming to the PS3 unless someone steps up to the plate to do it. And they don't have any investment in the 360, since the real money is in the Steam platform, where they will get 100% of the revenue on every copy sold. The only reason why the 360 is possible is because of the large user base of the system, and it's an attempt to reach a good portion of the market who don't game on the PC and let's them get a taste of what Valve has to offer.
DangerMouse @ Aug 5th 2008 11:52AM
Sry, that was for WhoMe.
Nate @ Aug 5th 2008 10:43AM
The Orange Box is 100% playable and the reports of its problems are HUGELY exaggerated. It has a few minor problems that are barely worth mentioning.
That being said, really, I don't give a shit about some crappy zombie game.
Tiptup300 @ Aug 5th 2008 11:19AM
Orange Box on PS3, well this is what I have to say about -loading-
Ihavepants @ Aug 5th 2008 7:11PM
Guess what Tiptup, the other platforms have frequent loading screens as well.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Aug 5th 2008 10:50AM
Wow, a developer doesn't want to port a game to the PS3?
I am shocked and appalled, good sir.
GenBanks @ Aug 5th 2008 10:56AM
lol, and when I looked at this page... 4 comments.

It was always in the rumours section. What's the big deal? Have you seen the quality of the rumours in some of these magazines!

Dear god, it seems the PS3 is an insult to them.
Intervier: PS3?
Valve Official: What?! How could you say that about my company, parents, siblings, children, wife and I? Are you some kind of monster? Swearing at me like that?
Intervier: ...But I didn't, I simply mentioned the P...
Valve Official: DON'T SAY IT AGAIN! Don't say that again! Do you hear me? Its an insult!
ToastyBuffoon @ Aug 5th 2008 11:43AM
WTF is an intervier?
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Aug 5th 2008 12:27PM
It's like a sommolier. Equipped with stronger writing and analytical skills, the intervier, is an elite group of interviewers and/or reporters who ask the toughest questions around.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 5th 2008 2:40PM
Oops, typo :P

I've got some genital herpes that I'd love to share with you Silla. True romance is a case of the clap.
Joe @ Aug 5th 2008 11:06AM
OH I GET IT.
Its left 4 dead because theres four of them
Yeah, I'm slow, don't judge me (although you all will)
j.howlett @ Aug 5th 2008 11:15AM
i never even thought that all the way through. but considering what you said, there are alot more than 4 dead
Joe @ Aug 5th 2008 11:21AM
but you play as a group of four.
robothouse @ Aug 5th 2008 11:26AM
To everyone whining: Want to play Valve games?
GET A PC.
I don't see why on Earth you would WANT to get a Valve game for a console, considering the horrendous support and dearth of updates that TF2 has gotten for the console gamers. Left4Dead is going to be no different.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 5th 2008 11:46AM
I'd rather get few or no updates for a game then be forced to play it on a PC.
deadjesterx @ Aug 5th 2008 1:09PM
I'll second that. Valve has always been a PC developer. The only reason the 360 gets so much love, as I mentioned before, is because the 360 coding is the same and the hardware is similar.
Valve also has a much larger stake in creating a successful PC game over a console game since they operate Steam. As for the lack of updates, that has to do with MS's certification requirements. I bet you anything that MS refuses to let any TF2 updates go up for free, hell they probably want no less than 800pts for what the PC has gotten.
Jacksons @ Aug 5th 2008 12:06PM
@tmac
Seriously? After Orange Box on consoles, I'll always stick to PC for their games.
Vcize @ Aug 5th 2008 2:33PM
This game is built for co-op, so there's no way in hell I'm playing it on a PC.
XBL was made for games like this. It will be fun as hell to go through with 3 buddies on mics.
Marty @ Aug 5th 2008 2:57PM
I agree with robothouse - nothing beats the control of the mouse / keyboard combo, or the sharp 1680x1050 graphics I get on PC - wouldn't trade that for a console game.
Ihavepants @ Aug 5th 2008 7:26PM
RE: Vcize
Have you heard of Steam? Microphones work on the PC you know...
OTAM @ Aug 5th 2008 12:05PM
Valve can kiss my ass with their games anymore. I'm sure the game will be great, but it's the principle of it. Valve can't be bothered because "iz 2 hard 4 me" and Gabe Newell's years of working with Microsoft,so I can't be bothered with their games. Insomniac, Media Molecule, and others can sure figure out how to develop on the PS3. Shit,Media Molecule has like 30 employees.
I own all 3 of the consoles AND a gaming PC,so it's not like i'm some bitter PS3 fanboy. I just think it's bullshit to keep your games out of the hands of people who want to share the experience you created and PAY $60 dollars for it. I can understand not being able to with exclusivity deals, but there are none with this game. It's more of Valve whining.
If you don't want to share your created games with the fans who have a passion for gaming, then piss off Valve. You make amazing games, but so do other companies,so you're not above anyone else. Man up for the good of the paying customers and the passionate gamers. Without us,you wouldn't HAVE a company.
Ihavepants @ Aug 5th 2008 7:32PM
They can make it for the PS3 they just don't want to becuase the source engine was never made with a console like the PS3 in mind. Porting it over to the PS3 must take up more resources and time than it's actually worth in the end.
Do you bitch about Resistance not being on PC, or 360? How about MGS4, is Kojima an idiot who wouldn't know how to make a game for PC or Xbox just because he chooses not to?
OTAM @ Aug 5th 2008 12:08PM
deadjesterx
You realize the original Half-Life was on the PS2 and
Counterstrike/Half-Life 2 on the Xbox,right?
Snutz @ Aug 5th 2008 1:05PM
Actually, that did work out really well. Quit buying into the hype and try playing the Orange Box on PS3 and you'll see that it's kickass. Until you play it yourself, stop writing about it. Come up with something original for once goddamn it.
EliteBeatsAgent08 @ Aug 5th 2008 1:26PM
Lol bitter sony fanboys...
There's NO law that says every developer has to develop for your precious ps3. Frankly I don't think it's worth their time and trouble.
I'll be buying Left 4 Dead either way. But it will definitely be sweeter if its a 360 exclusive.
deadjesterx @ Aug 5th 2008 1:31PM
Yes, I am. And like the 360, the Xbox uses the same kind of coding as a PC so those were easy to port.
As for Half-Life for the PS2, that was ported over by a different developer, Gearbox Software. Valve did not port it over themselves. So yeah, good try with the snarky comment. Know what you're talking about first next time.
Most likely than not, Valve probably doesn't want to bother with the PS3 for financial reasons. Since the PS3 uses a different form of coding Valve would either have to train their employees on how to do it, which takes time and money, or hire people who are familiar with the hardware/coding which also means spending more money. They probably figured that it would be more cost effective to forget about porting the title in-house and just focus on what their employees are already good at.
As for the whole two examples you provided for developers being able to create games for the PS3, well, both of those developers have almost exclusively made games for Sony. Insomniac's two main franchies are Ratchet and Clank and Resistance, both Sony exclusives. MM's first game is LittleBigPlanet, which is also a Sony exclusive. What I'm getting at here is that these two developers are already experienced with the way Sony builds their machines so of course they are going to be able to make great games for them. Valve is not experienced with Sony machines.
You're last little paragraph in your amusing rant makes you sound like the most rabid of PS3 fanboys, despite you're half-hearted disclaimer that you are not one. Why would Valve bother to cater to the Sony audience? Their number one priority has always been the PC. It's where their major fanbase comes from, it's what they know the best, and they have one of the best PC services. Since when do they owe anything to Sony fans? I doubt Half-Life for the PS2 contributed a significant amount of revenue to Valve, especially when you compare it to PC sales.
colinbell @ Aug 5th 2008 6:16PM
"Why would Valve bother to cater to the Sony audience?"
They dont. But if they dont want to make the effort, then FO. But they dont have the guts to do that either, and therefore lose 12-14 million customers.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 5th 2008 2:58PM
The humor in the headline was so 4ced.
Chase @ Aug 6th 2008 8:07AM
You suck ...4.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 6th 2008 9:13AM
Uh, I beg your pardon?
Spiza @ Aug 5th 2008 6:17PM
Throw in mouse/keyboard support and it trumps anything on 360.
Ihavepants @ Aug 5th 2008 8:46PM
Or you can use one of them there newfangled PC machines, aghoi giggigty.
Purple Haze @ Aug 5th 2008 8:17PM
Actually the Orange Box did turn out pretty well for the ps 3. Not as well as the other two versions, but it still has an average review score in the high 8s, which, while I don't care about review scores, is definitely respectable.
