Capcom's going out of its way to make sure its deliciously stale Mega Man 9 offers a true 8-bit experience, bugs and all. The company's Hironobu Takeshita recently told Gamasutra that the download will have the look and feel of a NES-era release, and that things such as sprite flicker have even been included as a -- thankfully optional -- feature.
"Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn't have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that's how it stayed in our game. In the part with the dragon with the flame, [there should be] flickering, and whatnot," noted the game's producer. "In the options of this game, you can adjust that, unlike the old games. We purposely put some of those old-school bugs into this game, so it does recreate that feel." Now, if only Capcom could emulate blowing into the cartridge we'd be in retro heaven.

Ahh cartridge blowing. Those were the days when my mind couldn't possibly have twisted said phrase into a sexual innuendo.
Man they are long gone.

I like when older titles keep the same nostalgic appeal but add upgraded visuals like SSF II HD or even SSBB. The best direction with this project would be something similar. However, I do not doubt Capcom and their ability to deliver the best content in the industry.

They could do a WiFi link with the DS for simulated cartridge blowing.

This is just too dumb. I don't see why they couldn't make it an updated NES game or a SNES game.

I do appreciate the old school. But old school is old school. This is new-school trying so hard to be old school that it's crippling the product.

Awesome. When I learned about this game, a friend told me he thought it would be great to play a NES-style Megaman without flicker and slowdown. I imediately replied that I wanted them! So, there I have it. Younger gamers might not have what it takes to understand what Capcom is trying to accomplish with this game, but I sure do!

Wow, this has actually gotten me interested in the game. Wierd, but then again I still play my NES so that is probably why this seems so awesome.
They seem to be putting alot of love into this.

i'm conflicted. i enjoy the idea of the old feel of the game but at the same time want to see it done without the drawbacks. i like how the old limitations made for some excellent game design choices. i would also like to see what would happen if mega man could shoot in more directions and faced waves of enemies and some bullet hell.

aka "it would be cool to see what would happen if they completely ruined this game"
no thanks. They did it right this time. Just like they did it right back in the day.
If you want a "modern" megaman, nab a DS and try megaman ZX. Great game, new twist on megaman.

No wonder developers are so frustrated.
Braid, a brand new game with very nice graphics and COMPLETELY NEW GAMEPLAY, is ripped on for having a $15 price tag.
Megaman 9 is a rehash of THE EXACT SAME GAMEPLAY with NES graphics, and people can't wait to blow their $10.
Seriously. I'll buy both, but you all lost the right to complain about the latest EA rehash, Halo 8, etc.

well, that is $5 more, and its an IP we've never heard of that I hear is a rather short game. If it were $10, different story i think, but $15 is a lot. Alos, due to what I'm sure will be an incredibly difficult game in Megaman 9, people will spend much more time playing megaman 9.

Yeah, but I've played Megaman 9 before. It's called Megaman 1-6.
Like I said, I am excited about both. But really, let's not be blinded by nostalgia. These "intentional bugs" should not be an additional reason to buy a game.

It's authentically NES, but we shouldn't enjoy having flaws like these rear their ugly heads again.
We all like the old NES classics, but we didn't like those games for their faults. There is such a thing as too authentic; the right way to do this is to be selective and ONLY recreate the facets of the NES experience that were GOOD.

Exactly. Let's not relive the limitations of the NES and instead embrace the bonuses these next-gen systems can provide.

Absolutely right. Mega Man 9 will be great because the Mega Man games had excellent game design. I'm alright with a series cashing in on its own quality - as long as MM games are still great, keep making them. But here the developers are going to the extreme of capitalizing on a name brand and a memory, and this is the absurd extent of that.
I was honestly shocked to see the positive reactions in this comment thread, and rather read it to see all the hate; yet apparently you guys are much more concerned with revisiting your childhood than with revisiting a gaming classic. But hell, if that makes you happy, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want it.

Why does anyone have to come down on the flicker as positive or negative? It's OPTIONAL, so the retrotards can rejoice at it, those who want a cleaner Mega Man game will have it too, and newcomers can switch between to choose what they like.
