Mega Man 9 getting intentional bugs, flicker
Capcom's going out of its way to make sure its deliciously stale Mega Man 9 offers a true 8-bit experience, bugs and all. The company's Hironobu Takeshita recently told Gamasutra that the download will have the look and feel of a NES-era release, and that things such as sprite flicker have even been included as a -- thankfully optional -- feature.
"Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn't have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that's how it stayed in our game. In the part with the dragon with the flame, [there should be] flickering, and whatnot," noted the game's producer. "In the options of this game, you can adjust that, unlike the old games. We purposely put some of those old-school bugs into this game, so it does recreate that feel." Now, if only Capcom could emulate blowing into the cartridge we'd be in retro heaven.

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

Wii-DS connectivity anyone?
mr mobius @ Aug 5th 2008 12:45AM
Brilliant thinking.
Metkis @ Aug 5th 2008 12:41AM
Ahh cartridge blowing. Those were the days when my mind couldn't possibly have twisted said phrase into a sexual innuendo.
Man they are long gone.
John McPoop (PSN:johnnynumber5) @ Aug 5th 2008 12:42AM
I like when older titles keep the same nostalgic appeal but add upgraded visuals like SSF II HD or even SSBB. The best direction with this project would be something similar. However, I do not doubt Capcom and their ability to deliver the best content in the industry.
john @ Aug 5th 2008 11:30AM
They could do a WiFi link with the DS for simulated cartridge blowing.
F1 & The Sword named Caladbolg @ Aug 5th 2008 12:46AM
Maybe on the last level half the screen goes nuts! NOW THAT WOULD BE A TRUE 8-BIT GAME!!!
Ranus Studios @ Aug 5th 2008 12:47AM
This gets better and better every time I hear about it.
Obie @ Aug 5th 2008 12:52AM
Now that is kinda clever hehe

Capcom, you DO CARE!!!! : D

Mega Man kicks ass
Jerk Face @ Aug 5th 2008 1:10AM
That is just so damned dumb.

I agree.
WRE: I own all 3! (4 if you count the DS.) @ Aug 5th 2008 2:01AM
I think it's kind of cool.

FALSE OPINION
Vidikron (FU) @ Aug 5th 2008 10:43AM
I agree... seems a bit stupid to me too. It appears that nostalgia is really clouding the judgement of many here.
arrrgh @ Aug 5th 2008 11:45AM
obviously if youre not looking forward to this game thennnn
IT IS NOT FOR YOU.
So go away and leave those of us who are salivating over the thought of this game, to our business.
SonicRift @ Aug 5th 2008 1:18AM
There'd better be spelling mustakes in this game.
invaderalex @ Aug 5th 2008 8:22AM
also there should be two language choices
English or Engrish.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 5th 2008 9:02AM

Mike @ Aug 5th 2008 10:48AM
FAILD.
Oreo @ Aug 5th 2008 1:35AM
This is just too dumb. I don't see why they couldn't make it an updated NES game or a SNES game.
Lijik @ Aug 5th 2008 2:13AM
Megaman 7 was clunky as all get out. Fuck making it anything like that.
arrrgh @ Aug 5th 2008 11:47AM
truth.
old school megaman ftw
emotaku @ Aug 6th 2008 2:07AM

YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY THIS MAKES ME!
Oh... I've been waiting since the NES died for this game..
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Aug 5th 2008 1:58AM
Oh my God...this game just has just taken not only my money, but my HEART!
Twist @ Aug 5th 2008 4:00AM
I still wish Capcom would release Mega Man Powered Up via PSN and XBLA. That game looked awesome but it is like one of maybe 3 PSP titles that can say that IMHO.
Bocephus 90 @ Aug 5th 2008 4:47AM
my god you retrotards are eating this up hook line and sinker. I hope they charge you all through the nose, you deserve it.
Backslash @ Aug 5th 2008 5:32AM
Nobody's telling you to buy it.
Squirrel3D @ Aug 5th 2008 2:14PM
Shut up and appreciate the old school
Hogslap @ Aug 5th 2008 3:29PM
I do appreciate the old school. But old school is old school. This is new-school trying so hard to be old school that it's crippling the product.
Microfoot @ Aug 5th 2008 4:32AM
I'm really starting to love Capcom with this Mega Man 9 stuff.
Moofree @ Aug 5th 2008 5:11AM
They should just go all the way and port it to NES.
Hell, Mega Man 6 was the last NES game.
They should just release a Mega Man 1 2 3 4 5 6 and 9 combo cart.
Habiib @ Aug 5th 2008 8:30AM
Holy Crap! A Neverhood avatar? I thought I was the only person who ever played that game.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 5th 2008 9:10AM
Fancy that, I was just getting ready to toss a Neverhood reference into another post.
Steve @ Aug 5th 2008 7:25AM
This is SO awesome.
edhc44 @ Aug 5th 2008 8:17AM
Awesome. When I learned about this game, a friend told me he thought it would be great to play a NES-style Megaman without flicker and slowdown. I imediately replied that I wanted them! So, there I have it. Younger gamers might not have what it takes to understand what Capcom is trying to accomplish with this game, but I sure do!
Burritoclock @ Aug 5th 2008 10:05AM
Wow, this has actually gotten me interested in the game. Wierd, but then again I still play my NES so that is probably why this seems so awesome.
They seem to be putting alot of love into this.
j.howlett @ Aug 5th 2008 11:32AM
i'm conflicted. i enjoy the idea of the old feel of the game but at the same time want to see it done without the drawbacks. i like how the old limitations made for some excellent game design choices. i would also like to see what would happen if mega man could shoot in more directions and faced waves of enemies and some bullet hell.
arrrgh @ Aug 5th 2008 11:49AM
aka "it would be cool to see what would happen if they completely ruined this game"
no thanks. They did it right this time. Just like they did it right back in the day.
If you want a "modern" megaman, nab a DS and try megaman ZX. Great game, new twist on megaman.
BIGFAT @ Aug 5th 2008 2:21PM
why would they ruin it if they took away the flaws of those old mega man games,in my eyes it would only make the game better.
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Aug 5th 2008 12:43PM
No wonder developers are so frustrated.
Braid, a brand new game with very nice graphics and COMPLETELY NEW GAMEPLAY, is ripped on for having a $15 price tag.
Megaman 9 is a rehash of THE EXACT SAME GAMEPLAY with NES graphics, and people can't wait to blow their $10.
Seriously. I'll buy both, but you all lost the right to complain about the latest EA rehash, Halo 8, etc.
CitizenSnips @ Aug 5th 2008 1:50PM
well, that is $5 more, and its an IP we've never heard of that I hear is a rather short game. If it were $10, different story i think, but $15 is a lot. Alos, due to what I'm sure will be an incredibly difficult game in Megaman 9, people will spend much more time playing megaman 9.
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Aug 5th 2008 2:58PM
Yeah, but I've played Megaman 9 before. It's called Megaman 1-6.
Like I said, I am excited about both. But really, let's not be blinded by nostalgia. These "intentional bugs" should not be an additional reason to buy a game.
Kael @ Aug 5th 2008 2:38PM
It's authentically NES, but we shouldn't enjoy having flaws like these rear their ugly heads again.
We all like the old NES classics, but we didn't like those games for their faults. There is such a thing as too authentic; the right way to do this is to be selective and ONLY recreate the facets of the NES experience that were GOOD.
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Aug 5th 2008 3:00PM
Exactly. Let's not relive the limitations of the NES and instead embrace the bonuses these next-gen systems can provide.
Yourself @ Aug 5th 2008 4:06PM
Absolutely right. Mega Man 9 will be great because the Mega Man games had excellent game design. I'm alright with a series cashing in on its own quality - as long as MM games are still great, keep making them. But here the developers are going to the extreme of capitalizing on a name brand and a memory, and this is the absurd extent of that.
I was honestly shocked to see the positive reactions in this comment thread, and rather read it to see all the hate; yet apparently you guys are much more concerned with revisiting your childhood than with revisiting a gaming classic. But hell, if that makes you happy, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want it.
Trocke @ Aug 5th 2008 3:32PM
Why does anyone have to come down on the flicker as positive or negative? It's OPTIONAL, so the retrotards can rejoice at it, those who want a cleaner Mega Man game will have it too, and newcomers can switch between to choose what they like.
FLICKER = NON-ISSUE
