Most of our posts are based around whipping you into a frenzy about some product (any one will do) so you'll go out and buy, buy, buy, shooting some much-needed muscle juice into our flagging economy. We do this because 1. We're incredibly patriotic and 2. We need Uncle Sam to keep turning a blind eye to the tens of millions of dollars we've hidden away in offshore companies all over the globe.
But today we're actually trying to brace you for a disappointment: When you boot up your 360 today, Major Nelson tells us there's going to be a new system update. But, he adds, it does absolutely nothing. Well, it "prepares for future growth of the service," whatever that means. Sorry to be the bearers of bad news, we just didn't want to see your get your heart broken. Hey, maybe you could cheer yourself up with some spending? That always helps us.

Um, Justin? Do you mean Uncle Sam? Not Uncle Same?

I was all looking around thinking I cheated the system and got the fall update early. I was smiling as the progress bar flled then my 360 restarted and I realized that I wasn't special and Microsoft still hates me.
Also, I think Braid sucks....that is all.

Braid is a nice, quaint platformer, but it wishes it were The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom.

I played the demo, and was pretty unimpressed with the time mechanics. It's more novel than revolutionary.

The update was to make all games work with the new X-remote and 360-chuck attachment coming this yr.

Glad to see the PS3 isn't the only one that gets updates that seemingly do nothing.
I'm of two minds about the updateyness (that's a technical term) of current consoles - I love having new features and fewer bugs all the time, but I hate having to wait for the latest update every time I resurrect a game from a few months ago (which is a problem with the games, not the system, but still... updatey).
I think if I had my choice, I'd stick with lots of updates, though. At least then you know you're getting bug fixes and new features.

You realize you dont have to update games if you want to play them single-player, right?

The 360 gets updates that do nothing for end users. The PS3 gets updates that do nothing for end users AND run the risk of destroying the console. The PSP gets updates that do nothing for end users because nobody downloads them, instead playing with hacked firmware. And the Wii gets updates that just refill the ink on the money printer. Poor DS. It gets left out of the "updates that do nothing" bandwagon.

i hate when i download a game on xbox live arcade, and then the first time i try to run it I am told there is a mandatory update. why not just update the game thats on the server?

The big difference is that the 360 updates take less than 3 seconds.
It really annoyed me when I dropped by home after lunch the day SC4 came out to try a couple matches online and all I got to do was download and install the new PS3 firmware and then go back to work.

Lol @ vcize but seriously, more people have to know that you are able to update via USB (from Playstation.com) for the PS3 updates. Its like the it is like the fastest, easiest, and safest (from errors) way to update the console. Doing it by WIFI just sucks.

When will the real fall update drop?

Probably just adds a new method of catching Pirates. Might use the webcam with eye-patch recognition software?

Microsoft adds some updates in to make you feel as if you're getting something, its a marketing ploy to get you all excited for nothing, even if you see nothing, you are 100% sure something good happened and will boast about it tomorrow, ha :) The wonderful ways of hype ^^

In order for something to be a marketing ploy, you kind of have to market/advertise it first.
Surely you didn't think the "fall" update would come the first week of august?

The difference with PS3 is that you know nothing good happened in the first place unless it was announced previously, and even still, that wonderfully new update is bound to have a few errors and flaws here and there, suddenly you copy of Heavenly Sword no longer works, or your porn collection installed on the harddrive gets corrupted, lmao

Lmao, I could imagine that phonecall going down well.

I thought this had bricked my box - when it rebooted, it just displayed a screen saying my console couldn't be updated, and directing me to Xbox support. After laying an egg, I switched the box off and back on, and was MIGHTILY relieved to see it boot up properly, and the system info indicates it did update correctly.
But still an unpleasant couple of minutes!

I thought this update would do nothing to change my system, but I was wrong.....immediately after updating I got RROD on an elite system that has always run flawlessly. Hooray!

It did absolutely nothing.... except bricked my console :-(. My first ring of death on my >1 year old xbox. Luckily, MS extended the RROD warranty...
