Surprising approximately no one, the final prices for the various releases of the multiplayer-only SOCOM: Confrontation have been announced. Tearing a page (and pricing sheet) straight out of the Warhawk playbook, Confrontation is being offered in both digital and Blu-ray variants, with the latter being offered in both stand alone and bundle versions.
Pricing for both the PlayStation Network download and the retail stand alone version is $39.99 while the retail bundle version – which includes the (rather attractive) PS3 Bluetooth headset along with "exclusive Behind the Scenes videos" – will be $20 more, at $59.99. No prices yet for the rest of the world, but Sony is aiming for a worldwide release of October 14th. Our magic eight-ball says we'll "most likely" hear a price before then.

I was holding off on picking up Warhawk so that i can buy a headset. Then, earlier this year they announced this game with this headset, so I decided to wait until SOCOM came out.
Finally, I'll be getting my voice chat on the PS3. And I'll finally be able to play Warhawk! That interests me slightly more than SOCOM. But only slightly - SOCOM seems awesome.

Big mistake. Hardly anyone on psn uses headsets. That's the thing that irks me about psn, especially with attitudes like Koehler, who claims voice chat adds nothing. Please

Go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and see if they have any Warhawk boxes left with the headsets. I just got the game and headset Monday for $30. I thought for sure they wouldn't have any left but I ended up with the last one.
Oh and it's true that the headset isn't actually necessary to play Warhawk and have fun. In fact the only people I have heard on random servers using it are usually just mic spamming.

Headsets are just used as an excuse to insult people easier, besides, who really wants to hear some teenaged adolecent shouting at people down the headset who have pwned him.

Headsets are good but again is up too the people you play with.
For example in TF2 is like flipping a coin you could be talking with people that play as a team or with assholes (Personally I think every ahole with a headset is either from the U.S or a teenager and so far I’m correct)
Games like Gears of War, Halo 3 etc etc Do not attempt to use it, ever.
Although I don't think the PSN community is like that.

Wow. $39.99 is a very reasonable price for a new game. Most games I see now adays up north of the boarder start at $69.99 or $79.99. Even with the exchange rate factored in, it's still a great starting price.

Remember: It's multiplayer only. Same as Warhawk. Agreed it's a great price (think of how much more time people spend on CoD4 multiplayer relative to the single player campaign) but Sony would have a seriously hard time asking for full retail price for it regardless. $60 with a nice looking BT headset to boot!

Agreed about the multiplayer thing but I was sort of thinking about other online-only games.
For example, when Age of Conan came out? it was $59.99 // $79.99 for the collectors. Plus, with Age of Conan there is a monthly fee.
Not to mention, Age of Conan at launch was a buggy game and I'm hoping Socom will have less bugs. *hoping*. Even if the amount of bugs are requal at launch, at least it costs almost half the price.

I feel bad for Shadowrun given how well Warhawk has done. A $40 price tag coupled with free multiplayer would have made that game a lot better.

The way I look at it, digital downloads are more of a way to keep game costs from increasing since they are saving money on packaging and distributing.

I was going to post some snide comment lambasting corporate greed, but who knows... maybe the money they don't spend on discs and boxes will instead go to bandwidth/server costs pertaining to downloads.
I'm *trying* to look on the bright side.

Downloadable titles come with the distinct advantages of being able to install the entire game on the HDD and never playing off disc. (Great for an online only game such as this). As well as having the game permenently backed up online. (Those who think there is a limit to downloading purchased contain on a single system are incorrect.)

I thought the PSN version was $20? Would make more sense anyway since I could get the disk version for the same price with bluetooth

I'm excited about SOCOM but I gotta admit I'm wondering if it's gonna be as good as 'BF:Bad Company' has been the last few weeks...
I'm torn about the disc/download decision too, as I bought the disc version of Warhawk and obviously, the disc needs to be in the PS3 to play it. Many of my friends bought the download version and it's much easier and faster to switch over from a movie or even another game, and play Warhawk off of the hard drive. I like the physical media though! Must acquire stuff! Must have on shelf! ARRGH

I don't really care about SOCOM (or any other MP-only titles, for that matter) but I do want that headset. Any word on whether or not that'll be sold as a standalone?

That headset is supposed to become the official PS3 headset and is supposed to sell standalone.

Does anyone know if they fixed the walking mechanics. Every video I've seen of this game has people floating around as they shuffle their feet... it might sound nit-picky, but it ruins it for me

You sir are a moron. A multiplayer only game is a demo in what respect? I hate trolls. This site needs a banhammer.

You mean like how Shadowrun was a demo? Oh wait, it wasn't and it was priced at $60 on 360 too, on top of the Xbox Live subscription for a multiplayer only game. SOCOM and Warhawk are a steal compared to SR.

Your idea of a full game is a game with a story and none rehashed levels? You sir are still on some kind of drug. Obviously you haven't played many games.
So I suppose you think Warhawk wasn't a full game either?

Multiplayer only titles are my favorite. If I was gonna play single player I would play MGS4 or GTA4, or an RPG. Warhawk is awesome, I bought Bad Company and haven't touched single player (its amazing online), and now this game looks sick for $40. I just hope it surpasses the hype. I need a game that good.

I actually would like more multiplayer only shooters for 40 bucks over a singe and multiplayer for 60. Lets face it multiplayer is where the value is in a shooter.

Theres nothing more annoying then a game adding in multiplayer to make up for the poor single player experience, they might as well scrap the single player and leave it as multiplayer ¬_¬ Thank god revolution has come about ^^
