john @ Aug 7th 2008 12:13AM
He doesn't?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Aug 7th 2008 12:50AM
sigh, It's a 4chan meme. You wouldn't understand.
Kyattsuai @ Aug 7th 2008 1:56AM
penny arcade is a pretty cool guy eh shuns fatality and doesn't afraid of anything
WhoMe @ Aug 7th 2008 7:52AM
Hai.
But seriously. This is exactly why I don't like the Penny-Arcade guys. They pull this stuff all the time just to get attention and to grow their egos. They pulled this shit with Jack Thompson at some point as well.
Mind you, I don't like fatality or Thompson, but this is just PA scoring free media attention and showing off how they are supposedly "with it". I don't like their sleazy moves, it's just low. They need to grow the fuck up.
Granted, sometimes their cartoon is funny and dead on, but even then it's not laugh out loud funny. Couple that with the fact that they pretend the characters are not fantasy versions of themselves (even though when you listen to their podcasts they talk as if they are) and the mess they made of their own game and the dude who's being wordy for the sake of it (I swear, listen to their podcast, sometimes he doesn't even know what a word he's using means!).
dark_inchworm @ Aug 7th 2008 9:29AM
Well, I gave WhoMe a +1.
ihateemo @ Aug 7th 2008 12:42PM
I gave WhoMe a -1.
The PA guys are funny, irreverent and mock people who deserve it. As if "pulling this shit" with Jack Thompson is a bad thing? As if they need *more* attention (since PAX is a sell-out event every year)? As if it wasn't just a humourous quip about how ridiculous it is that E For All is trying to make it seem as if Wendell is someone worth showing up to a gaming convention for? Yeah they have big egos, but so freaking what? A lot of people - including many people on this site - do as well. The only difference is that these guys have earned the right to it, with the success of their expo and Child's Play charity, as well as the clout they wield in the industry.
I don't think Holkins is "wordy for the sake of it", but then I speak fluent English and find his prose entertaining. Oh, and I enjoyed the PA game. But each to their own I guess.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Aug 7th 2008 12:42PM
@Whome
Or it could be they like to make jokes at everyone. Which is usually what they do. I don't see anything wrong in that. And hell I laughed, so they accomplished what they set out to do.
Huey2k2 @ Aug 7th 2008 12:15AM
This seems slightly petty, and not very funny to boot.
BananaBoat @ Aug 7th 2008 4:30AM
I'm pretty sure they are kidding.
lexicon @ Aug 7th 2008 12:39AM
sour apples meng; don't hate the only gaming celebrity we got [outside of korea]
unfriendly_cat @ Aug 7th 2008 1:20AM
Tycho and Gabe are arguably gaming celebrities themselves.
Zsavior @ Aug 7th 2008 12:39AM
The picture of Fatality up at the link joystiq provides pretty much says everything. I don't know the guy personally, and I got nothing against him but he should never make that "intimidation" face again.
He makes Brainy Smurf seem tough.
gm76 @ Aug 7th 2008 3:28AM
Is it just me or does he bear a resemblance to Lucas from "The Wizard"?
Seanross @ Aug 7th 2008 12:40AM
Not hating, but just because he's a celeb doesn't mean he's likable or we should like him.
j.howlett @ Aug 7th 2008 6:56AM
same goes for mike and jerry
Zarim @ Aug 7th 2008 12:43AM
My whole opinion of this hinges on whether this he's a nice guy or a douche.
DigTheDoug @ Aug 7th 2008 12:45AM
He's a douche.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Aug 7th 2008 8:16AM
Yep, he's a total douche. He likens his "celebrity" status as to being a Rock Star, calls himself a professional athlete, and mocks the people he beats publically despite the fact that he's paid to play at his level whereas some jackass who's called into a pit from a crowd of bored onlookers would, at most, be a member of a clan.
Fatal1ty Wendel... the Billy Mitchel of a new generation.
Duke @ Aug 7th 2008 10:07AM
I just cant get behind someone thinking they are a rockstar by playing games. Everything I have heard about the guy is negative and I have made sure to avoid any purchases of product with his name on them. Quite frankly, I'm sick of hearing his name.
Dovi @ Aug 7th 2008 12:48AM
Who?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Aug 7th 2008 12:51AM
exactly.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 7th 2008 7:19AM
...the idea and occupation of a "professional gamer" still rattles my mind as being completely ridiculous - only in the sense that someone pays him to do what he does. That "someone" should also pay me for something amazing. Like finishing an entire 12-pack of beer. Or somehow waking up in time for work the next morning without a hangover. Who knows.
Chameleon @ Aug 7th 2008 11:11AM
heh, well put foxhound ....
+1
joshua @ Aug 7th 2008 7:59AM
This is an awesome move from Penny Arcade. Seriously, does anyone actually care about fatal1ty? Or E for All for that matter?
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Aug 7th 2008 8:24AM
WhoMe... I think YOU need to RELISTEN to the podcast, fella. Everytime I heard them get a word wrong is was intentionally funny. One of their favorite gags, actually.
Of course when you jump on their shit for making fun of a company who doesn't "get" gaming as a culture, I'm not expecting much. Facing facts, you set the bar pretty low. Now look up Johnathon "Fatal1ty" Wendel. Read some of the interviews, how he likens himself to the god of gaming, how good of a winner he really is, or some of his past exploits at gaming conventions. Then analyze how he literally believes gaming celebs to be as big as football players and how he's like a rockstar in his celebrity status. Read all that, and realize why most gamers who know of him, can't stand him. Also.. fucker spams the same combo in SCIV.
Read up all about Fatal1ty and he'll remind you of one of gamings other resident douches... Billy Mitchell. Gaming needs good guys in the public eye. Not the living embodiment of everything that's wrong with the XBL community touring the nation on a bus with his gaming handle on it....
j.howlett @ Aug 7th 2008 9:56AM
he goes to places where gamers are bigger than football players and rockstars.
j.howlett @ Aug 7th 2008 10:48AM
maybe its because i knew of billy mitchell for awhile and for more than just donkey kong, but i couldn't hate him and nothing really made me like that steve weibe guy like everybody else seems to. he is an okay guy from what i've seen but neither of the two really represent me as a person who likes to play games. the same goes for fatal1ty and the pa guys. i've been around those types before, played games with them but thats the power of video games to me. i remember going to arcades and playing maybe AvP with 3 other random people and none of us had any thing in common but the game.
Shmil @ Aug 7th 2008 12:52PM
Well said Sheppy, well said.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Aug 7th 2008 7:36PM
Billy Mitchell was a douche long before King of Kong. Seriously, look up why he wears a patroitic tie.
Jyrrah @ Aug 7th 2008 9:32AM
Personally I'm happy about this. Johnathon "Fatal1ty" Wendel appears to be a paid spokesperson for E for All and they were pains in the rear at the last PAX. The last thing I want is to have to listen to their sales pitch inside of PAX. It was bad enough when they had their people outside last year.
jimmygotsmack @ Aug 7th 2008 10:31AM
Well, looking at that picture of Fatal1ty, with the dyed blond hair, I can say, he looks like one of those douche bags at the mall, minus the pop collar. Wait, that shirt is black.... Yep, he pops his collar.....
See if you can see the difference

This dude, Mitchell, and the Frag Dolls can all go jump in a big lake filled with eels. They're ALL bad for gaming, and they ALL embarrass us as gamers.
Better yet, just dump them all on an island with Jack Thompson and the Xbox Killer.
