Omegathon 2008 lineup includes Peggle, Boom Blox, Rock Band, Jenga
The 2008 Penny Arcade Expo Omegathon V lineup has been revealed and it feels surprisingly casual. There's no Doom or Quake title like we've seen in every previous Omegathon. Also new: starting the first round with a non-board game (Jenga has been pushed to round 5). Here's the list:
While last year's Omegathon skipped the previous tradition of using a classic retro title (Pong, Combat, Tengen Tetris), every year has featured an id Software shooter. With Rage, Doom 4 and the new Wolfenstein looking unlikely, we're trying to think of another potential, unreleased FPS that could top last year's surprise Halo 3 inclusion. If Tycho and Gabe are looking to make our heads explode, maybe they can get Duke Nukem Forever. We won't find out until minutes before the final round on Sunday, August 31 at 4:30 PM PT.
In the meantime, check out the list of past Omegathon lineups, and feel free to make your own and play along at home.
Omegathon I (2004)
- Round 1: Peggle
- Round 2: Boom Blox
- Round 3: Pictionary
- Round 4: Rock Band (Our guess is Rock Band 2)
- Round 5: Jenga
- Final Round: *** TOP SECRET ***

Smart money's on Jason Young, aka Morgon from MyGamerCard.net. How about that, an internet celebrity in Omegathon V? I hope he's ready to rock at... Pictionary and Peggle. :S

The final round is actually Acclaim's racer titled Top Secret. It will be a Mad Max meets Mario Kart MMORPG. They will debut a character named Oiram McEyePatch, and he will wear an eye-patch. Ishoy will be the name of his trusty steed, which will be a go-kart armored in unicorn tears and the souls of lost men. Top Secret will go on to outsell Super Mario Bros. and Dragon Warrior III combined.

Spore.
You heard it here first!

I'm gonna place my bets on Mega Man 9 being the final game.
Ghen @ Aug 7th 2008 3:57PM
very good thought. I second that notion.

Wii Fit gets my vote.

Heh, I always love Penny Arcade, but I've always thought they had pretty shitty taste in games.

It's gonna be Bungie's erstwhile E3 announcement that they play. Mark my words.

Hey, I'm a Joystiq reader!
The only thing that sucks about the Omegathon so far is having to buy these games to practice! I said in one of the previous Boom Blox posts that I'd be the first one to pick it up once it came down in price -- I guess I'll be forced to go back on that ;)
Peggle is a surprisingly good game, wish they'd get this out for XBLA already.
I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to 'practice' for Pictionary, though. Perhaps I can moonlight as a psychologist and pretend my drawings are Rorschach.

Well, I would suggest buying the most recent verson of pictionary, and looking over all the cards, getting a list of the ones that would be reaaaly hard, and figure out a way to draw it really fast. Hehee, you don't want to be sitting there, waisting time on how to draw "Isolation"

"Perhaps I can moonlight as a psychologist and pretend my drawings are Rorschach"
Perhaps you should just moonlight *as* Rorschach and seek out your other opponents ;)

They should parody The Wizard. Last event, they pull out Super Mario Brothers 3 as if it is some huge unexpected reveal.
Glenn Stotz Jr. @ Aug 7th 2008 12:40PM
Street Fighter IV maybe? But I think that has the potential to became too elitist/obvious an exercise.
Mr Khan @ Aug 7th 2008 1:16PM
I'd be pretty good at most of those, except that i fall flat on my face at Pictionary
I suck so bad at that
MNC Dover @ Aug 7th 2008 2:40PM
I'm in that picture! I'm the guy in the center of the picture holding the short sword, which was one of the consolation prizes for coming in second. More importantly, I get an automatic invite into this years Omegathon.
This is by far the most casual line-up of games I've ever seen and is completely unexpected. Time to get practicing in hopes of winning my trip to Japan.
