How many DVDs does it take to screw in a light bulb? ... Are we talkin' a Mega Texture light bulb that casts penumbra shadowing?
In an update to id Software's data dilemma, John Carmack tells Tom's Games, "We're pretty much resigned to the fact that we're going to make [Rage] fit onto two DVDs on the 360." In other words, Microsoft isn't about to write off the steep royalties that allegedly add up with each additional game disc. The good news is you'll only have to whine for mom to swap your Xbox 360 discs once. The bad news, as headlined last week, is that Rage for Xbox 360 will supposedly look worse than the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray version due to data compression. But how much worse?
"All of the key scenes, the things anyone is going to take a screenshot of are going to look exactly the same on both platforms," Carmack explains. "They'll get the high quality compression. But if you go into some areas in the wasteland, like behind a fence where nobody will typically go and explore, this is where the 360 version may look a little blurry compared to the PS3." We hear id's been sweeping some artifacts under the rug too. And watch out for those jaggies hiding beneath the bed!

And from a pure business stand point: I wonder why id isn't going all out and make a game that fully uses PS3's capabilities. I mean Epic did same thing with Gears of War and singlehandedly won the engine licensing war, everyone and their mother is now using Epic's engine. And id once was the king of engines, now they don't have any licensees at all it seems.

meh. Carmack seems to do anything for press these days since his only ties to being a dev god are from Doom 1 and 2. WHat better way to get free press for your game than praise the 360, then later say "it's blurry" and will be gimped over the PS3 lol. Other games aren't blurry on the 360 Mr. Carmack... maybe learn2dev better? Sounds more like an excuse to me...

"If you hit reply under a name..."
It doesn't show "reply" on all comments, only on new comments. For example, you replied to my comment and now your comment doesn't have "comment" option.

Right, so you hit reply under the comment that has the reply under it. See, a comment is like a thread in a forum, so when you respond to that comment, it goes in the list of replies to it. So where I responded to you last, if you hit reply under your name, your reply would have come in and appeared under mine. Thus it would be posted as if it were a response to me.

Wait, what's this about Rage being on consoles? It's a PC game first, right? Aren't both consoles playing second (and third) fiddle anyway?

You guys gotta look at it from a business standpoint. Are they going to waste money on a third disc just so they can make the areas THAT YOU DON'T EVEN VISIST look better? I probably wouldn't.

Funny how 360 users cry foul on the PS3 larger storage capacity now when only a few months ago the difference was regarded as a minor detail. Boy how times have changed, or they haven’t. 360 users will cling to their dying xbox ship, living in total M$ denial of the facts. Keep your RRoD death inspired, old DVD, HDMI 1.2 tacked on, no native wifi, over charged Live service to yourself, you all obviously could care less about technology or ’state of the art’ and / or can even comprehend it.

I think they are forcing companies into a two disk game limit, so they don't start getting comparisons between both consoles. Microsoft made an exception on Lost Odyssey because it's an xbox exclusive first party title. We will understand once Metal gear Solid comes on 4 DL dvds and Final Fantasy will probably come in 6+ DL dvds.
Also consider sony doesn't have any compression on their cgames so it doesn't translate into 10 minute loading times...
