Nintendo: Wii Music not competing against Rock Band, Guitar Hero
Nintendo's VP of Corporate Affairs, Denise Kaigler, says the company isn't competing against Guitar Hero and Rock Band with its toddler-friendly overly-casual Wii Music. She explains to GameDaily that the company is trying to make "enriching opportunities for consumers" and have them create something unique. Yes, tempo creation through waggle is certainly unique.
Kaigler tells the site that Wii Music will have the "power to inspire kids to develop an interest in music." Well, as GayGamer discovered, it sure didn't inspire the media attending E3 this year. We'refrightened sure that Wii Music will find an audience somewhere, even if it is just the rugrats roaming the great plains of the playpen.

This music thing will phase out once people start picking up real guitars. The folks at Sam Asch must hate these music games
rockintom @ Aug 8th 2008 10:35AM
Totally. Music games are way old. Real instruments are new and exciting!
Lorben @ Aug 8th 2008 10:55AM
Just like Dance Dance Revolution lead to a lot of gamers turning into real dancers....
disguy @ Aug 8th 2008 1:45PM
What's even funnier is that it REALLY did.
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 8th 2008 3:56PM
I'm breaking all kinds of NDAs and stuff, but I'll share the info anyway. I have an exclusive first look at the peripheral Nintendo is going to bundle with Wii Music:

You made me lol Fullmetal Salchemist. I haven't heard a good "I win button" joke in a while.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 8th 2008 9:51AM
Wow, you guys are going to really piss off the NDF with that picture even though it's more true than not.
religiousjedi @ Aug 8th 2008 9:58AM
Nintendo! Now we don't compete with EA and Activision!
That picture is win, btw... :)
Jody Anthony (gamertag and psn: JodyAnthony) @ Aug 8th 2008 10:19AM
i'm as big of a nintendo fanboy as the next guy, but personally that picture made me laugh. great way to start the morning
Jacksons @ Aug 8th 2008 11:34AM
@tmac Are the most devoted Nintendo fans even excited about this? I doubt it.
Mr Khan @ Aug 8th 2008 11:42AM
Even most of us are quite dismayed and disappointed, especially after the awesome possibilities displayed a long time ago
I still have a hard time believing that it took them two years to make it, considering a functional form of it was there at E3 06, and the current form seems to have LESS functionality
Something's fishy, is all
mr mobius @ Aug 8th 2008 1:00PM
I'll agree with Jody. The picture is hilarious and no doubt NDF has a sense of humour.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 8th 2008 1:45PM
Unless WiiMUSIC has been confirmed to be bundled with a controller, I doubt it'll see the "infamous" profit that WiiPLAY brought about.
That is the happiest child I've ever seen depicted on this site.
Shadow El @ Aug 8th 2008 1:59PM
I thought the picture was funny, and I'm not even considering getting the game, but honestly the "WiiMusic for toddlers" thing is getting old already, guys. Kinda like the phrase "waggle" did about 2 months after you started using it, and sometimes it doesn't even apply to the game.
redneckvampire @ Aug 8th 2008 2:03PM
I'm screwed...I have no choice but to buy the game. I've got a wife that loves music and a little girl about that age that also loves music.
It better be at least half as good as Electroplankton. I enjoyed it and was thinking Wii Music would turn out to be a little like that. I'm a bit upset to hear all the negative buzz.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Aug 9th 2008 7:05AM
"I still have a hard time believing that it took them two years to make it"
They're just waiting for a lull to release it. Duh.
Park Zero @ Aug 8th 2008 9:52AM
If I had a baby boy or girl. I would buy Wii music. I’m sure they would love it. Nintendo really knows how to speak to their audience. You can’t argue with their success.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 8th 2008 9:53AM
That picture explain it all.
and that baby it's just adorable.
Double J @ Aug 8th 2008 9:54AM
As rampant a Nintendo "fanboy" as I may be, even I can't defend that Fisher Price product Nintendo has created.
FSK405K @ Aug 8th 2008 12:17PM
You mean everything they've made that isn't Zelda, Mario, or Smash Bros, right?
CitizenSnips @ Aug 8th 2008 9:56AM
there really isn't any denying wii musics amount of suck.
SoulBlade @ Aug 8th 2008 10:00AM
I bet the baby would have done a better job at the drums than the douche at the press conference.
Roto13 @ Aug 8th 2008 10:01AM
Well I think it looks like fun, so there.
Vcize @ Aug 8th 2008 10:34AM
That doesn't surprise me.
j.howlett @ Aug 8th 2008 11:51AM
it does look like fun
Roto13 @ Aug 8th 2008 3:09PM
Wow, I think you'd have to be a pretty hardcore fucktard to vote someone down for saying a game looks like fun.
Kevin @ Aug 8th 2008 10:01AM
Every time I hear about Wii Music I want it even less.
Totally not buying it evar.
Shogan @ Aug 8th 2008 10:01AM
Once Wii Music comes out, people will drop the licensed music and instruments of Rock Band and Guitar Hero in favor of playing Elementary School Band-sounding versions of Nintendo classics by blowing their Wiimotes.
Chilly P @ Aug 8th 2008 10:03AM
...and I used to be such a Nintendo fanboy
Kye - Me_DF @ Aug 8th 2008 10:28AM
Same here.
Somebody explain to me what's happened.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 8th 2008 10:03AM
I don't care about this game but this game isn't may for me, so I guess the casuals will love it..
Dammit I wish Sega was the one that Created Guitar Hero T_T.
danny. @ Aug 8th 2008 10:06AM
I'll probably get my kid (if/when I have one) a real instrument pretty early on, but I guess it's not such a bad thing for a toddler to start developing some sense of keeping time and playing with different sounds.
Justin put it best, however, when naming this game 'if you don't stop playing that, I'm leaving your mother'.
We're just not the target market for this thing, no use criticizing it anymore than we should be discussing story archs in Dora the Explorer.
mr mobius @ Aug 8th 2008 1:13PM
You don't criticise Dora because there is nothing to criticise. They have fine writers who keep it simple on the surface but have plenty of undertones which strengthen the character relationships and further the story. Dora is a daily compulsion for me.
Has a nice booty as well.
danny. @ Aug 8th 2008 1:16PM

Lone Starr @ Aug 8th 2008 10:11AM
"enriching opportunities for consumers"
Enriching? Opportunities? How stupid do they think I am?
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 8th 2008 10:31AM
They're not trying to fool you, they're trying to fool the idiot masses who will buy this pathetic piece of garbage and use it once until it gets thrown into the closet with every other bad wii game/peripheral.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 8th 2008 10:26AM
My love of Nintendo is nearly comparable to Fernando's, it's that strong. (on a barely-related note, I do like rock music released after the 70's)
However, Wii Music is balls. Big, sweaty balls.
Robot Kitten Face @ Aug 8th 2008 6:43PM
You make it sound like big sweaty balls are a bad thing.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 8th 2008 6:44PM
Well, if you'd like to try some out, my number is... wait, the oven's beeping... brb
matt @ Aug 8th 2008 10:37AM
Can they really sell this as a game though?
It.Doesnt.Do.Anything.
Seriously, there is no skill involved and is exactly like the picture depicts. The 21st Century equivalent of ratting a dummy.
Bakkster @ Aug 8th 2008 11:02AM
It's not a game. It's a toy for casual players.
Hence why it's not meant to compete with RB/GH.
Only real reason to hate it is that they're spending time developing this, rather than a new Zelda.
Joop @ Aug 8th 2008 10:44AM
I'm getting really sick of the way companies claim to not be competing with products simply as a way to explain why they are losing to them. PS3 and 360 get trounced in Wii sales and they claim they aren't competition. Wii Music will fall flat on its ass compared to GH/RB, so it's like they're doing this preemptively. It's really depressing to hear reps from Nintendo, the bastion of fun for fun's sake, use phrases like "enriching opportunities to consumers".
beatboxtaun @ Aug 8th 2008 11:00AM
WHAT?! But but...it has so much potential in winning this battle. lmao
samfish @ Aug 8th 2008 11:01AM
If they let you make freestyle compositions and export them to an SD card, I'll buy this on day 1.
Otherwise, meh.
RC @ Aug 8th 2008 11:57AM
You'd buy a turd if it had nintendo stamped across it somewhere.
RC @ Aug 8th 2008 11:59AM
You'd buy a turd if it had Nintendo stamped on it.
Mr Khan @ Aug 8th 2008 12:03PM
That was a low blow, RC. samfish is in my boat of thinking that this game can't possibly be as simple as they're making it out to be
I kinda like the idea of freestyling myself, but i haven't seen anything other than Fisher Price mode
Or we could just make generic fanboy generalizations, and make asshats of ourselves.
mr mobius @ Aug 8th 2008 1:08PM
The Nintendo Seal of Quality is enough to reassure me that it'll kickass.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 8th 2008 1:50PM
Samfish ---
If they allow that, I swear I'll also get the game, just to cover lewd songs by 2 Live Crew("As Nasty As They Wanna Be") and Slayer("Payback"). Actually that concept kind of reminds me of the music player/creator in MARIO PAINT...
