Weekly Webcomic Wrapup revisits the classics
Digital Unrest's Chris Simmons originally made this comic in April 2006, and we subsequently crashed his servers. The strip has bee remade this week with new art and, given that it never got a fair shot last time, we're going to throw it in again this week. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Chris. Here are our picks for the week's best game-related webcomic. Polling after the break; be sure to vote for your favorite!
Orderly Debate (Digital Unrest)
The World May Never Know (Fanboys Online)
Bluetooth Headset (CAD Minis)
For Your Consideration (Penny Arcade)
Rupees Cannot Buy Hearts (MNC)
The Fundamental Theorem of War (2P Start)
Anguish (Penny Arcade)
Giving Birth (Castle Vidcons)
(Not game-related, but make sure you read PVP Online's five-part FoxTrot/Family Circus "tribute")

None of them were laugh out loud funny this week. But the Chupacabra burrito was pretty good.
Though do you think the PA guys can really say anything about pricing nowadays since they currently own the most expensive XBLA game and are essentially rolling in $$$?
Hmmmm?
ShankShank @ Aug 9th 2008 6:01PM
Well, about PA, the comic was about people bitching about the price point for a completely awesome game. If they were complaining about the price of Braid themselves you'd have a point.
ark_keeper @ Aug 9th 2008 8:44PM
No, he has a point. He's saying they have lots of money since they charged $20 for their game, so $15 is nothing to them.
A Pissed-off English Gamer @ Aug 10th 2008 9:03AM
Actually, the point Tycho makes in the news post is that people don't design their games explicitly with Live Arcade in mind; games like PAA deserve the money they cost because they had a lot of work put into them. In the comic they were just noting the fact that people spent $15 on very stupid shit, and that decrying the tag on a game was just silly.
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 10th 2008 11:53AM
Well, PAA is $10 on Steam and knowing MS marketplace practices(GoW Mappack!) I'm not sure if you can blame PA for the price.
Also I'm back from Marrakesh and it sucked ass.
Alfred @ Aug 9th 2008 5:43PM
Cool, first person to vote for Digital Unrest. http://alfredeus.wordpress.com >_>
Shignami @ Aug 9th 2008 5:43PM
HA HA HA.
PEOPLE ONLINE ARE VULGAR, CAD, YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN!
Ghen @ Aug 10th 2008 7:01AM
hehe, that was funnier than the comic =)
Demaar @ Aug 10th 2008 8:02AM
At least he's, well, I was going to say trying but that's not quite right; at least he's doing something different? No, it's still fairly derivative. Well, at least he's not crapping out the same ol' garbage anyway, visually.
Michael, Son of Aragorn @ Aug 11th 2008 12:31AM
This cad just went up and I find it to be pretty great:

MNC Dover @ Aug 9th 2008 5:44PM
In the MNC comic, I don't know if it's more sad or pathetic that I didn't need the internet to write those directions to the first dungeon.
Come to think of it, I could probably get through level five from memory. If only I could use these powers for good.
Yourself @ Aug 9th 2008 5:47PM
Anyone care to explain the joke in MNC? Or is it really just: "if you think a walkthrough of a videogame is a conversation, with a woman, or really anyone, you are wrong."
Thatoneguy64 @ Aug 9th 2008 5:53PM
You got it right.
There's no deep meaning to the joke; MNC just isn't funny.
MNC Dover @ Aug 9th 2008 5:56PM
That's basically it. A friend of mine heard something similar in a booth next to her at a restaurant, but instead of Zelda it was WOW.
Shignami @ Aug 9th 2008 5:58PM
Its not a bad concept for a joke per se, its just horribly done.
I guess the real joke is "nerding out will not get you a second date"
Yourself @ Aug 9th 2008 6:06PM
It's just that there's a difference between a fact and a joke, and further between a joke and a comic. MNC's comic basically said exactly my above comment, without adding surprise, absurdity, sarcasm, or anything besides a furry thing that talks.
BrennaCeDria @ Aug 9th 2008 10:54PM
And that WoW conversation was one of the most painful conversations I'd ever heard. :p And really, just because something is a "comic" doesn't mean it needs to be HI-LAR-I-OUS. I mean, damn, Prince Valiant ran in newspapers for how long? There's more than enough precedent for a comic to be serious, dramatic, funny, sad, or just general commentary that includes both good comics, which I believe MNC is the majority of the time, and crappy ones.
...All that said, if the Katamari joke hadn't been a remake, I would have totally voted for it and not MNC, in spite of the personal experience similar to MNC. That shit is awesome.
Thatoneguy64 @ Aug 9th 2008 5:52PM
Hahaha, 2P Start is the only one that actually made me laugh.
My vote goes to them.
Bryan @ Aug 9th 2008 6:14PM
I have to admit; I am a math nerd.
Jacksons @ Aug 9th 2008 6:31PM
Yeah, only one to make me chuckle as well.
Geist @ Aug 11th 2008 2:15AM
At first, I was like "meh", then after a few moments I finally got the last line, and I actually laughed. Got my vote.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Aug 9th 2008 5:55PM
Had to give it to anguish.jpg this week because it's a hilarious complaint to have about a game and the people who signed that petition are so very, very sad.
Almost gave it to MNC though just because of past experiences. I was on a blind date with a vacuuous noisetube and she finally asked me what I was into. Said music, games, movies... she settle on games and talked how much she loved the Tetris on her phone. I got the blank blinkies when I told her who made Tetris...
Trickob @ Aug 9th 2008 8:06PM
I agree 100% about "anguish.jpg." I'm always dumbstruck by what "gamers" will bitch about but that was really ridiculous. and that "Necromancer" seems like a real douche and PA did a great job of capturing that.
CJC @ Aug 9th 2008 8:26PM
It's also a shockingly accurate portrayal of a large part of the DeviantArt user base.
The angsty, whiny, teenager portion.
Ghen @ Aug 10th 2008 7:04AM
I usually try not to vote for PA just to give others a chance, but Anguish was just too awesome.
ShankShank @ Aug 9th 2008 6:00PM
Cool, thanks for linking another completely bland and joke-less CAD. For Chrissakes, he even copy-pastes his minies. He's a hackjob and you shouldnt put him on here just because a large percentage of morons like it.
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 10th 2008 11:50AM
So they shouldn't put CAD there just because YOU don't like it?
ShankShank @ Aug 10th 2008 6:16PM
No, they shouldnt put it up because his comics are objectively bad and have no redeeming value in it's art, characters or so many WORDSWORDSWORDS that don't even form a cohesive joke. Not to mention the fact that buckley himself is an incredible tool and complete douchebag. He also sends pictures of his dick to underage girls.
Mr Khan @ Aug 9th 2008 6:08PM
Penny Arcade. Truth is funny. Not necessarily because it's about Braid, but it just reminded me of the stupid shit people will spend $15 on
LordKelvin @ Aug 9th 2008 6:10PM
As a physicist, it is my sworn duty to vote for 2P Start, as funny as the DU one is.
Neebs @ Aug 9th 2008 6:18PM
Castle vidcons.
bleh.
subpar week.
Saria the Cat @ Aug 10th 2008 5:46PM
Is there something I'm just not "getting" about Castle Vidcons? Is it episodic or is each strip a self-contained joke? Maybe it's just whooshing over my head.
KeegdnaB @ Aug 9th 2008 6:20PM
Had to go with 2PStart
I can't resist a good nerd joke
LaughingTarget @ Aug 9th 2008 6:22PM
I didn't vote for it purely because it used a pun.
Ghen @ Aug 10th 2008 7:05AM
I went back and read it... I totally missed that the first time ;)
giantenemycrab @ Aug 9th 2008 6:30PM
I went with the Penny Arcade For Your Consideration comic this time.. Not so much because it was funniest, none of them really were IMO, but because I agree with it.
Jhongerkong @ Aug 9th 2008 6:36PM
How does a Wiimote give birth to a Micro?
Mr Khan @ Aug 9th 2008 8:21PM
That's what got me
If it had been, say, the MotionPlus, that would have made more sense/been funnier
IMO, at least
Tamer Brad @ Aug 10th 2008 4:16AM
Try reading it again.
Shogan @ Aug 9th 2008 6:56PM
I'm pretty sick of Braid's endless hype. When comic strips are talking down to people because they aren't 'supporting' an overpriced game, it's gone a bit too far.
Saria the Cat @ Aug 10th 2008 5:41PM
Here, here. That and the PA doesn't make sense. The type of people that will spend $15 on shirts and burritos DO buy Braid. It's people like me that DON'T fling money around that won't buy Braid.
That said, I am two puzzle pieces away from completing world 5. :) Hooray for gifted MSP!
Viridium @ Aug 9th 2008 7:15PM
Wow... I read the PvP link and wish I hadn't. I should have known better, that shit has rarely been even amusing, let alone funny. I know that Mike and Jerry make fun only in jest, but I like to delude myself into thinking it's real. Suck on that, you and your crappy webcomic, Steve Kuntz!
PepperJack @ Aug 9th 2008 7:27PM
For Your Consideration and Calculus Wars were both great but I gave the slight nod to MNC because it made me laugh the hardest.
ronald.raygun @ Aug 9th 2008 9:18PM
awesome avatar
AlexC099 @ Aug 9th 2008 9:30PM
Jesus, even in his chainsawsuit ripo-- Er, I mean even CAD-mini Buckley can't get his dialog under control.
j.howlett @ Aug 9th 2008 9:55PM
no confidence
Triforceowner @ Aug 9th 2008 10:22PM
As a math geek, I liked the pun...
Mr.ESC @ Aug 9th 2008 10:35PM
Penny aracade wasn't funny.
CAD was sort of funny at least is getting better of this week really sucked.
(I was going to vote for f@nboys but I'll for something else for a change)
