Japanese hardware sales, July 28 - Aug. 3: Olympic observation edition

Perhaps this is due to confusion on the developers behalf on how to actually create an Olympics-based title. The Olympics are, after all, an assortment of specialized, miniature games. How one could possibly craft an entire title around these ... minigames is completely beyond our comprehension. Perhaps that's why our favorite game based around the ancient tradition eschews the bonds of accuracy entirely. We speak, of course, of developer U.S. Gold's magnum opus, Izzy's Quest for the Olympic Rings. Seriously, who needs digital triathlons when you've got production values of that caliber?
In news related to the actual purpose of this feature, the PSP once again takes home the gold this week -- though following last week's pattern, all of Sony's consoles took a sales hit while the others received a steady, if not minor, increase. Following four months of Sony superiority, could we be nearing a drastic change-up on the prestigious sales chart pedestal? Oh, wait -- we've got a better Olympic-themed metaphor: Could the PSP be ready to pass the torch? Better yet -- will the 360, in a Kerri Strug-esque show of persistence, secure a first place finish over the Russian gymnastics team, by which, of course, we mean the other consoles?

The PSP has the gold medal in Japan?
At this rate, the PSP outselling the DS for an average of 10,000, it would take almost 25 years (or 1,200 weeks) to catch the DS (currently in Japan: PSP 10 million and DS 22 million)
Happy_man @ Aug 10th 2008 10:51PM
Nintendo will have a new handheld by then, you know that better than anyone.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Aug 10th 2008 10:53PM
No sane person expects the PSP to overtake DS's total sales, but its the first handheld gaming console to have lasted against the juggernaut Nintendo so I measure it a great success in that regard.
Its carved out its own niche in the handheld gaming market just as Nintendo has with the Wii.
Let them all coexist peacefully.......can we?
Xavier @ Aug 10th 2008 11:08PM
Does writing about sales make you happy or something? For a device that's more expensive I don't think it's doing too bad.
ill trooper @ Aug 11th 2008 2:11PM
...of course Fernandito, you didn't bother READING the sentence you allude to -
"...the PSP once again takes home the gold this week."
"This WEEK" is what they wrote. C'mon, bro, you just wanted to leap out and type in that big math exercise... But it's funny, lower in the comments you didn't bother calculating out how long it would take the 360 to catch the PS3 when you talk about "Tales of Vesperia."
Jake11 @ Aug 10th 2008 10:57PM
that's fantastic
JerJerBinks @ Aug 10th 2008 11:01PM
You sir, have won a medal for being the biggest dick, congratulations.
Gun Barrier (Gamer Tag) @ Aug 10th 2008 11:08PM
wow, go 360! Its only 4k behind the ps3. I wanna see some new live players.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 10th 2008 11:12PM
Next week you will see the 360 passing the PS3, thanks to the release of Tales of Vesperia.
atrimus @ Aug 10th 2008 11:21PM
^^the resident 360 lacky has spoken.
BPM [MSN: BPMdotEXE @ hotmail.com] @ Aug 10th 2008 11:28PM
While it may sound a bit fanboyish of a statement, there is actually truth behind it.
The Tales of... series is a pretty big seller in Japan (not nearly as DQ or FF, perhaps). People have actually been lining up in Japanese retailers for 360s and Vesperia. The Vesperia bundle was pretty limited (the initial run at least, was only about 7k units), so this has pushed more standard 360s, and individual copies of Vesperia.
There is a good chance the 360 will rank higher in the next sales chart. While I doubt it'll pass PSP, DS, or Wii... it will certainly pass PS2 and PS3... which would be the first time it's done that in MONTHS (I think Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon was the last major push for the system... I can't quite remember).
Vesperia will rank pretty high, too. I don't know if it'll be the #1 seller for the week, but it'll surely do well.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 10th 2008 11:31PM
BPM
Well, what I said sounded very fanboyish, but I was being serious.
The 360 will sell more than the PS3 next week, thanks to the bundles.
SyChO @ Aug 10th 2008 11:45PM
It's just a matter of time! >-)
Solid Chief @ Aug 11th 2008 2:31AM
Xbox360 having just "a matter of time"? But "a matter of time" is the ps3's main weapon ;p
hehehe
This better not double post!
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 10th 2008 11:13PM
Let me guess... you were in last place, right?
SPAGHETTI @ Aug 10th 2008 11:26PM
dont talk to a woman like that
Wiinterfang @ Aug 10th 2008 11:46PM
I'm watching the Olympics right now and the final team swimming race was awesome.
quickshade @ Aug 11th 2008 12:00AM
So much for the French crushing the Americans.......damn French always think they are so good, well get a taste of American power baby.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 12:16AM
Well I'm not American but that will teach them to mess with the US of A.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 11th 2008 12:21AM
I want some Freedom Fries =p
Noshino @ Aug 11th 2008 12:26AM
Uh, actually, I have been hearing more praise for the US swimmers for the past 2 weeks, hell, it was all over the radio/tv/newspapers...it was getting annoying, at least they proved to be good
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 12:28AM
Well I'm glad the hype was true, those guys were beastly but the French pretty much trash them on every interview so you know..serves then right >:(.
Vcize @ Aug 11th 2008 1:23AM
Noshino, the reason for those comments is because the French (who were actually favored in the event) were talking allllllll kinds of trash about how they were going to "crush the Americans".
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 1:27AM
And they almost did, America won in a spectacular (to say the least), turn of tables at the very end... that's just what sports and the Olympics is all about if you tell me.
it was so so close.
vidGuy @ Aug 11th 2008 1:28AM
I'm only a casual watcher of the Games but I must say that Phelps attempt at 8 Golds and LeBron James's guarantee of the Gold have me interested. Glad to see the USA team win this one.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 1:31AM
That Phelps dude is a Freaking Beast... I hope he wins the gold tomorrow, also he need to break no destroy his own record.
NukeAssault @ Aug 11th 2008 1:52AM
That was indeed an amazing race. My heart was pounding at the finish. Cant believe they pulled it off and killing the world record too! I was almoast as happy as Phelps. Who looked like he had just won a billion dollars. XD
Noshino @ Aug 11th 2008 1:58AM
Vcize, thing is, I haven't been keeping up with the Olympics, so I wasn't are of that, but I was aware of the US team hype as I mentioned before (and I don't know where in florida you live, but here in Davie, it was all over the media, ugh)
vidGuy @ Aug 10th 2008 11:51PM
You know, it would be interesting to do a study on what countries would have won wars or other international issues if the winner was decided in the Olympic Games. Just stay away from the 1936 Games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_Summer_Olympics
Wiinterfang @ Aug 10th 2008 11:59PM
My comment disappear? that's funny.
AzaMcWazza @ Aug 11th 2008 12:23AM
How's the press for Mario and Sonic at the Olympics been over in the US/UK/Japan. I didn't expect much here in New Zealand, cause, well, our Nintendo distributor went belly up. I'd have thought a promo of M&S would have been smart around this time.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 12:29AM
The problem is that the Nintendo/Sega contract was a timed one, and I think they have until brawl or something to complete it.
Sonic Team make the 2 games in just months.
samfish @ Aug 11th 2008 12:56AM
The Mario & Sonic game approaching 10 MILLION in total sales pretty much ensures another crossover.
...I just hope the next one is a platformer. It would be great if they used the Brawl engine to make it, methinks.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 1:33AM
Why not the Sonic Unleashed Engine? have you see the new wii screens? it looks beautiful *tears*
samfish @ Aug 11th 2008 12:51AM
I don't see how you think you could possibly win, considering that you are in fact standing on my dick right now.
j.howlett @ Aug 11th 2008 1:23AM
i've been watching some interesting events, like handball. i want a psp or a couple. i could go for my own ds also.
#28 @ Aug 11th 2008 1:43AM
Olympic Games suck.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 11th 2008 2:53AM
But, but, SPEED WALKING! How can you not get excited for that?
Oh you're right, everyone's only waiting for the curling event two years from now.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 11th 2008 9:11AM
I for one, enjoys the manly, testosterone filled cheer awesomeness of water polo.
Solid Chief @ Aug 11th 2008 2:33AM
Why does the ps3 have such low sales? Like I understand why the 360 has them, bt not the ps3 there.
Noshino @ Aug 11th 2008 3:14AM
many reasons actually. The PS3 in reality, if it wasn't because of the PS brand, it would be selling much less than the 360.
The problem is, both consoles don't really appeal to the Japanese crowd, they are too western. Their focus this generation is shooters and online multiplayer, and neither of those has a big impact in Japan.
Yes, the 360 is releasing many jrpgs, but have you seen the way they are advertised?
Anyway, like I said, both companies MUST look back at what it was that the PS2 did well, games for different audiences PLUS good advertising
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Aug 11th 2008 8:47AM
They don't even have to look back at PS2, they can look at the top three. Here, Solid Chief, maybe this will explain it better.
This is what is on gaming racks for the Wii.
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-11e-49-en.html
This is the DS...
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-9g-49-en.html
This is the PSP...
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-9f-49-en.html
And now for the failing consoles and why you should understand PS3's and 360's lack of penetration in that market.
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-105-49-en.html
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-br-49-en.html
The fact that both PS3 and 360 are acting excited in Japan about Call of Duty: World at War is a big tell. PS3 will do better once it starts acting like a playstation.
Curmeo 2.0 @ Aug 11th 2008 3:07AM
funny how when DS was outselling PSP in Japan, you'd have Nintendonald's worshippers constantly dissing PSP.
yet when the tables are reversed, the worshippers dont even bring up the sales figures, they just talk about Ludwig's/McElroy's writeups.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 11th 2008 3:31AM
Pfft. I just forget most of the numbers anyway but Film Noir Detective and Pokemon #1337 JPNSALESNo. I won't forget.
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 11th 2008 8:05AM
I get it now!
Back when I was in france, I saw Mario-themed happy meals. It all makes sense!!!!
Ethan @ Aug 11th 2008 3:59AM
In a world where only Japan and America are competing and for some reason japan has two teams and they were all born in China?
Psaakyrn @ Aug 11th 2008 6:24AM
Frankly, I think an Olympic Game should focus more on the team building than the core games.. sort of a championship manager, except in a more global and encompassing manner. You don't get champions from just throwing them in competitions after all, the training is vastly more important...
ElmanJo @ Aug 11th 2008 9:26AM
Griff,
Have you not figured out that you are the only one who can see those two images next to the 360 numbers?
Mr.ESC @ Aug 11th 2008 10:43AM
Fun fact the opening event was Fake.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/skynews/20080811/twl-olympic-fireworks-faked-for-tv-3fd0ae9.html
ill trooper @ Aug 11th 2008 2:03PM
Not really an accurate statement: that link is only talking about those final fireworks at the end, and that link talks about how the fireworks did actually happen, it's saying that they were too dangerous to film, so they pulled that lame stunt. So yes, while I now see that the final fireworks were faked for TV, I also feel they were the least impressive of the amazing spectacle - the interior shows were amazing, and that was real. 500 x 100 foot LED screen? 2008 Tai Chi students? 2008 drummers? That pixel/cube thing with the dancers inside?
If you watched the ceremony you'd be hard pressed to say it was anything less than AMAZING, although I do have mixed feelings about the whole thing, as China is on a supreme enviro and human-rights wild-out right now, and likely for the next 20 years. The whole ceremony was like a microcosm of the entire Chinese Government and corporate mindset right now: make something fast, gratuitously wasteful and amazing with readily-redundant manpower, all while acting like the environment is also a concern.
