Finally, a much quieter 360 since the drive is the main source of its noise.

But now to get a 120gb HDD. : (

if you have an FYE in your local mall, check out their video games section. the FYE at my mall just discontinued offering video game hardware and accessories, and got rid of all of them by having a 60% off sale. i purchased my 120 Gig hard drive for $70!

I have the ghetto arcade with no HDD, can't try demos, nothing, really wish I could use any 2.5" SATA HDD like the PS3.

Love all the PS3 whiners who say "you bitched when PS3 had installs!" Completely missing the point that on Xbox it's completely optional AND works on every single game.

PS3 has nice powerful hardware (though I don't like how it looks), but where Sony consistantly falls down is in the software.

I love how when Micorsoft has a feature it works across every game consistantly (voice chat, achievements, installs, replaceable music, etc). You can really tell they have experience with operating systems. People complain about Microsoft being too controlling with their game requirements, but this is the result... everything works and works consistantly. Far worth it to me!

The PS3 has optional installs occasionally and is optimized for them.

That's great... for the few games that support it.

Again, the point is that on Microsoft's system the support is there for EVERY game.

I thought the point of the install was to save the disk drive? No noise. And less heat. I could care less about load times. But a cooler, and quieter 360 is always appreciated.

I'm with Jason. This is a useless bulletpoint for MS to slap on the 360 box. A "we do that too" type maneuver. I'll be interested in how much this will actually speed up load times. Bring on the PS3 v. 360 videos! lol

I think everyone in this forum is missing the point.
They are doing this to alleviate the problem with the DVD storage space vs the blu-ray. Can I say down loadable content to compliment the install? Better textures, etc...

Davejo, I don't think thats true either. It works with games that have been out this whole time, so how would your claim be the basis?

MicroSoft has been doing "we do that too" since inception. They just occasionally do it better or first.

I think the biggest reason for MS doing this, is because so many people have been complaining about the noise of the system. This will all but eliminate that, so if nothing else, it gives one less argument for PS3 fanboys to use against the 360?

Well, I thought the should of lowered the price of the HDD (120gig in particular) before they released this function. I mean most people only have 20 gig HDD I believe. Since, the Pro System was the one everyone bought before the Elite. That and most people don't want to buy the 120 gig separately cuz of the cost. Its a cool function no doubt, but I don't think the majority of people (me included) will use it.

btw, does anyone know if you are able to add music on your hdd with a usb yet?

The installs on the 360 should help more than on the PS3.

For many cross platform titles, the PS3 needs a required install, but the load times are still the same or marginally better than the 360 version. Many say its because of the slower Blu-Ray drive and some argue that isn't the case.

Maybe that explains the loudness of the 360's DVD drive, it can read quickly and needs no mandatory installs like the PS3 but has a quiet Blu-Ray drive.

Problem is, all the current 360 games aren't optimised to run off a hard drive. You'll probably see very little (if any) difference in load times.

Future games will probably be different though.

The one game that will truly be the measuring stick of how well this helps load times is Mass Effect. I want some comparison videos, ASAP!!

Arguing the fact that the 360 can D'load games to the hard drive is so stupid... Unlike the ps3, IT'S NOT MANDATORY, IT'S OPTIONAL.

Now, if it became mandatory for 360 games going forward, then there's a case... If not, +1 to the 360.

I love it when people get pissed about having a choice. On the PS3 most of the time an install is mandatory. On the 360, it's optional. Oh the humanity.

Hopefully, they'll unveil a steam-like service, in which we can purchase our games off live, perhaps pay an extra $10 bucks to have the game shipped if we want, bypass brick-and-morter asshole deathtraps like Gamestop and not have to bother with dvd's or blu-ray discs at all because we would already be authenticated. Maybe they could go ahead and go the extra mile and slip a serial number card in the game box for us to register with when we buy the game and do a full install and never get the disc out again... What would Blockbuster do, you say? Throw the card away. Or it could be tied to another unique ID# on the game disc, so that if you purchase a disc second hand and the serial number isn't in it, you can use that ID to get a new serial, and the old one wouldn't authenticate whenever that person gets online next. Or something.

Having choices... I can't think of anything worse.

If only MS allowed you to use any 2.5" HDD. Instead you have to buy an overpriced 2.5" HDD with some plastic and metal surrounding it and some custom firmware on it.

If they allowed you to use any HDD, I'd probably use this feature more often. I have less than 4GBs left in my 20GB, and I have about 7 arcade games, Psychonauts, and no demos on it.

I thought I remember seeing an announcement that a price reduction was coming for the 120 GB drive. $150 I think. (still too high.. but we should all wait until this fall before dropping that $180)

They're probably doing this so when they have multiple disk games out, you could copy your disks onto the HDD and then just have one disk in the tray for copy protection.

Yeah, but a 25+ GB install won't be fun to sit through, and simply not feasible unless you have a 160GB harddrive (although you might be able to sqeeze it onto a 60GB one if you haven't taken up much space with songs, videos, downloaded games and saved data).

Surely it'd be easier to just swap discs if its a linear game (eg. Final Fantasy)?

I hope it only installs compressed graphics files, and sounds but not the whole game! This can minimize the file to under 4gigs. I don't mind the Xbox's dvd drive to keep spinning.

@gaymerxbox360
It does exactly that, and so most file sizes mentioned so far are around the 5-6GB mark. Which also discounts what hyam said above you. It'll be interesting then to see how much disk noise will be reduced, seen as it does still read the non load heavy data off the disk.
I have mass effect and an elite anyway, so i'm happy whatever the outcome.

So I don't understand. Could someone explain this to me? You're installing a 6-7GB object onto your 360, and it gives you the option to play GTA IV from the hard drive. So why would you still need the disc if its on your hard drive? It says 'play from hard drive' why wouldn't it say 'play from hard drive and disc.' Wouldn't it be more efficient to just play it from the disc instead of wasting time on installing it? Is there faster load times or something?

It's to help the noise and laser problem. With installs it makes it so it doesn't have wear out the laser to read the disc and to keep the 360 quiet during games.

Seems like a pointless waste of space on my 20 gig drive, but I can see the appeal on some games if I was to get a 120 drive. I mean, the 360 is damn loud, and if this was to shut it up while playing RB, I'd be all for it. The keyword here is optional, it's great for games with long loads (Oblivion), or games where you want as little background noise as possible (RB, GH).
