Daily Mail has jolly ol' hysterical freakout over Wii's MadWorld
Kudos to Britain's Daily Mail, which has completely outdone its own most histrionic moments with a piece about MadWorld for the Wii. There are just sooo many good factually fracked lines in the story, it's impossible to pick even a few to use as examples -- not to mention, the reporter was too embarrassed by the piece to put his name in the byline. The main conceit of the Mail story is that MadWorld is going to ruin the image of the Wii, which has a "repatoire [sic] of mostly sports games the basic graphics and easy-to-use motion sensor remotes have become hugely popular with young children and families."
In the madness of the Mail's MadWorld piece, one of the best parts is that controversy-riddled Manhunt 2 -- also available on Nintendo's Wii -- isn't mentioned once ... not once! By the supposed logic used in the story, Manhunt 2 should have been pegged for opening the door to ruining the Wii's "family friendly" image a long time ago. The British Board of Film Classification banned the game because of its its violence last year, but the group since reversed its decision. Point is: Read the Mail piece. It's positively brilliant in its absolute ineptitude.

This is great, now the game'll get more attention (and a few more sales out of it). Controversy only helps.
Dan @ Aug 12th 2008 5:51PM
Are tabloids in your country respectable? How is this shocking?
xxHughesxx @ Aug 12th 2008 9:25PM
Exactly, its the god damn Daily Mail, a bunch of racist pigs who blow everything out of proportion.
Nobody who wouldnt already believe such mindless idiotic twaddle will pay a whit of notice.
Daily Mail readers: Scum of the newpaper reading world.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 12th 2008 4:38PM
Why even bother giving attention to the Daily Rag?
Josh @ Aug 12th 2008 11:13PM
Seriously. Please, no one give them any more website hits.
And Joystiq, please don't give them any more publicity.
Anni @ Aug 12th 2008 4:39PM
"most violent video game ever"
And hilarity ensues RIGHT at the headline! Well played, blokes.
Quiggy @ Aug 12th 2008 6:04PM
Forgive my ignorance, but if MadWorld isn't the most violent game ever, what is? Is there something clearly more violent?
Haggard @ Aug 12th 2008 8:02PM
Soldier of Fortune. Realistic graphics, real humans, horrific injuries of war. Some bits genuinely did make me squirm.
Ihavepants @ Aug 12th 2008 8:10PM
Manhunt, Soldier Of Fortune (any). Probably more out there that I havn't played. Oh yeh Postal.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 13th 2008 9:11AM
No one mentioning No More Heroes?
stabbyEyejack @ Aug 12th 2008 4:41PM
Obviously not enough immigrants to moan about this week. Next best thing, people who play violent computer games.
WHAT IS YOUR TEENAGER DOING?
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 12th 2008 5:25PM
As one of those "immigrants", I find it very ironic since they probably have AT LEAST one Polish Janitor in their offices.
That and the fact it's the Mexican Syndrome all over again.Spoiled working class(and chavs) would rather bitch about immigrants all day than go find an actual job.If you got fired because an immigrant was willing to work harder for the same wage you get(the only case in which they work for smaller wages is Black Market and this doesn't really come into the equation since Brits don't usually want to work illegally.) then it's your own fault for slacking off and taking it for granted.
I also love how tabloids claim that immigrants are taking up all the jobs so there's no more "slots" for unemployed Brits. But, considering that there were enough jobs for a couple million of immigrants, why was finding a job such a problem for Brits before all the immigrants "flooded" the country?
Daily Mail needs to get a fucking clue and understand that some people are simply vermin that enjoys being council-housed and get unemployment benefits instead of blaming everything on immigrants.
Poisoned Al @ Aug 12th 2008 7:30PM
No, chavs can't read, so they buy The Sun. That paper is just as bad, but it doesn't use any words with more then two syllables.
Haggard @ Aug 12th 2008 8:04PM
At least The Sun has decent games coverage. That, and stonking great tits.
...
I read The Times.
Ben @ Aug 12th 2008 8:12PM
Actually, The Sun's average word length is almost exactly the same as any broadsheet. 'The chavs' used to have to write GCSE Maths coursework on it.
The Sun also has tits.
Roddie @ Aug 13th 2008 2:29AM

Spakkenkhrist @ Aug 14th 2008 9:13AM
You are both massively RIGHT.
Duke @ Aug 12th 2008 4:46PM
What a weak and pathetic article that is. Last time I checked nobody was being forced to bring a copy of the game into their house. Its a machine, and its as family friendly as you choose to use it.
Dr. @ Aug 12th 2008 4:54PM
Quite. Wheres the article about DVD players, and how they can play Disney movies BUT ALSO PORN?
Shaq-Fu @ Aug 12th 2008 5:16PM
The Internet: Sure, you can use it to read our shitty articles without paying us, but did you know that little Jimmy also uses it for PORNOGRAPHY? It should be outlawed in the UK, because it sets a bad example for our children
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 12th 2008 5:36PM
What about Joystiq? Sure you can read news but what if you start reading the comment section? Or worse come across some kind of a sex-obsessed pervert while you're down there?
*cough* Samfish *cough*
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 12th 2008 4:51PM
Boo-fucking-who.Do you find it that suprising?
Who gives a shit about shitty British Tabloids? They're a fucking government funded lobotomy for the working class.
Haggard @ Aug 12th 2008 8:08PM
Sadly, the middle class here in the UK read it and are swept away by the tide of sensationalist bullshit (the same thing as terrorism in my book) and they shape their opinions on it. These are the people that make decisions in local councils, control how people work, and make and break perceptions in society.
While I don't give a shit about the day's imbecilic rants printed by the racist cretins at the Mail, the stupid half of Britain does give a shit, and that, simply put, is very dangerous.
TwEE @ Aug 12th 2008 4:51PM
This dude should team up with the wailing hardcore and they can attack common sense from both sides.
markhill66 @ Aug 12th 2008 4:55PM
No More Heroes was pretty violent, too, and it had this weird sexual overtone that made it even creepier. I'm surprised that it never gets mentioned.
Roto13 @ Aug 12th 2008 4:56PM
When are people going to stop referring to the Daily Fail like it's actual journalism?
samfish @ Aug 12th 2008 4:57PM
Yes! YES! Cry and whine about it! Maybe then Mad World will be lucky enough to avoid the "Clover Curse"!
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Aug 12th 2008 5:01PM
I gotta say, Samfish. I'm digging God Hand.
I only bought it based on your hype of it. Glad You introduced me to it.
samfish @ Aug 12th 2008 5:06PM
Aww, shucks! It's my pleasure! I'm just glad someone heard my preaching the word of God Hand.
It IS the Greatest Game Ever, after all!
Jacksons @ Aug 12th 2008 6:11PM
God Hand is fantastic, this one I'm still not sold on. Videos have not impressed me (yet!)
Levi @ Aug 12th 2008 6:51PM
Your raving over Godhand last week pushed me over the top too. Got it in the mail yesterday, and I'll finally play it after work!
error2k2 @ Aug 12th 2008 4:57PM
Amazing, the Daily Fail never disappoints when it comes to scaremongering.
Park Zero @ Aug 12th 2008 4:58PM
Why did it take so long for an article like this to appear? Everyone of us here saw this coming a long time ago.
Schuey19 @ Aug 12th 2008 6:09PM
Because the Daily Mail is always a couple of months behind current pop-culture (at best) based on the fat it is written BY Middle-Englanders, FOR Middle-Englanders
Last week they were ranting about how the BBFC weren't doing their job because Batman received a 12a certificate - fucking hate that paper and the Express.
Zootittles @ Aug 12th 2008 5:03PM
A pretty spot on comment on the site:
"Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Resident Evil: 4, House of the Dead 1, 2 & 3, Alone in the Dark, Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop... just a few Wii games which come to mind. But of course they're not violent are they?"
Zootittles @ Aug 12th 2008 5:04PM
Except for the fact that HotD 1 is not on the Wii. Fa!
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 12th 2008 5:27PM
Funnay enough, you forgot the main offenders. No more heroes and Manhunt 2.
Dale Massey @ Aug 12th 2008 5:31PM
Manhunt 2 has yet to be released in the UK.
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 12th 2008 5:44PM
...and MadWorld isn't the most violent game ever.
Your point?
Dale Massey @ Aug 12th 2008 5:48PM
Nothing really. I'm all for mocking The Daily Hate Mail, but the article asks why they didn't kick up a stink about Manhunt 2 - They did - and in the UK at least, this will definetly be the Wii game with the most violence, and most "damage" as they put it to the Wii's child friendly image.
Im not agreeing with them but its not really accurate?
Phil @ Aug 12th 2008 5:43PM
Oh cool, MadWorld's getting more free publicity.
Most violent game evar? Srsly?
Someone obviously has never seen manhunt or The Suffering or ANY OTHER VIOLENT VIDEO GAME IN EXISTENCE.
Britain: Bitching about violent games whenever we can with as little credible info as possible.
No offense to gamers there but CHRIST does it suck to be you guys.
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Aug 12th 2008 6:04PM
"No offense to gamers there but CHRIST does it suck to be you guys."
No, not really. This article is not indicative of all of us. Or even the majority. It'll still get it's release, same as in the US.
Poisoned Al @ Aug 12th 2008 7:39PM
I like how the yanks forget how their media goes completely fucking spastic at the first sight of boobies.
But then I found Americans have this strange power to ignore anything that contradicts their strange idea that America is the bestest place on earth, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
Seeing how I don't want all my savings wiped out see how the US markets are circling the toilet, I VERY glad I don't live where you live.
Sucks to be YOU!
Maybe next time you'll vote someone in who can spell his own fucking name!
Grey Acumen @ Aug 12th 2008 5:49PM
here's what I submitted:
Part of being "Family" oriented is that ANYONE in the family can find something fun to play, NOT just 8 year old children. I'm 25, I bought this system for myself because it offers the most immersive gaming experience of the 3 consoles. I'm not about to have some busybodies shut out games that show an honest amount of quality, challenge, and style simply because of "image" issues. If you don't like the game, don't buy it, but I paid just as much for this console as everybody else did, so don't even try to hijack this system as yours alone.
Van Faulk @ Aug 12th 2008 6:59PM
See this is why the brits lost the civil war. No guts.
TwEE @ Aug 12th 2008 7:54PM
I was there, thats not what happened! The mongolians cheated!
Haggard @ Aug 12th 2008 8:09PM
Yeah, you'd still belong to us if it wasn't for those pesky tabloids!
Mr Khan @ Aug 12th 2008 8:35PM
Good. Now if only some American outlet would pick up on it, it could solve quite a few of the Wii's image problems, and make MadWorld into a hit
thsch67 @ Aug 13th 2008 6:02AM
"impale enemies on road signs, rip out hearts and execute them with weapons including chainsaws and daggers."
Looks like its time to go buy a wii.
V_R @ Aug 13th 2008 6:44AM
There's an identical piece in the Metro too. They must share the same pool of inept, sensationalist journos.
